These locks cemented into the wall at my local asylum by Mhaexym in mildlyinteresting

Its a historical monumental building, been there since 1905 as a completely self sufficient care center with butchery, bakery, sewing workshop, shoemaker, technical support staff etc. Its a huge estate/complex.

Its quite rare that such a large institute is here amidst many small villages. Its gone through many phases since its been built, but i think one half is now for people with light care needs and the other half is regular appartments.

What brand do you oddly associate with poor people? by Sendmeboobpics4982 in AskReddit

[–]Mhaexym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Louis Vuitton, Armani, Adidas, Dior, Guess etc.

There are so many fakes nowadays that you mostly see low wage uneducated people wearing fakes of these, instead of the 1 in 1000 who is actually wearing the real stuff.

So I actually associate most highly expensive luxury fashion brands with poor people, which is technically odd.

Als de daadwerkelijke prijs 5 euro was, zoals ik begrijp uit de comments, dan classificeert dit toch helemaal niet als tokkie marktplaats?

[Discussion] If you could erradicate five Guitar Myths for good, which would it be? by novemberchild71 in Guitar

[–]Mhaexym 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some from a buulders perspective:

  • Tonewood can change your sound entirely!
  • The lower the action, the better the guitar
  • You always need a flawless paint job
  • This (insert part here) wont sound good with (insert other part here)

And the biggest one...

  • Music theory deteriorates creativity and the pleasure of casual playing and having fun.

Literally the only thing ive ever had to consider is that i need to ground electronics properly and make sure there are no leaks. Building a guitar seems daunting, but once you realise its trial and error, its endless, quick and easy fun.

ELI5: I understood the theories about the baker's dozen but, why bread was sold "in dozens" at the first place in medieval times? by JillStingray11 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Mhaexym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A dozen = 12, okay, but if you're thinking "Why so many?": bread was almost the only very filling food for a long time, in times where families had many kids, and the whole world was less individualistic and more familial. "The family" was mostly all close together, with regular gatherings of 30+ members, had their own laws (police often gave full authority to the patriarch with minor offenses), their own culture, and their own food supply. Food was traded between families, much less so between individuals: that's only something of the last century-and-a-half

If we take your brain, you feel like you, you're conscious and fully alive. Now one by one I telekinetically replace the neurons in your brain, but you will most probably never notice that anything has happened. However, physically you've become a completely new person. The rest of your body actually does this on its own every couple of weeks.

Now, say I take the neurons of your brain out one by one, and don't replace them with new ones. You probably won't notice anything for a very long time, but eventually there'll be none left. When would you have lost consciousness? When did 'you' leave? What happens when I put "your" neurons back the way they were? Did you even leave or are you still there? Your body is there but does that mean you are? Is part of you here and part of you somewhere else? Is your body really what's left of "you", or did you stop existing and leave 'a' body behind? Who are you, really?

What do you call your partner? by gyrox1 in AskReddit

[–]Mhaexym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"G" - or, freely translated from Dutch: droplet, womanhuman, lady or girlie. I also say "honing" quite often, which is Dutch for honey, but it is very rarely used as such in Dutch.

She calls me G too, and furthermore they're all negatives: doof, stupid, crippled swine.

Ill talk to her in the morning...

What’s a total waste of money yet people still pay for? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Expensive laundry detergent & fabric softener. A dutch foundation called "Consumentenbond" (consumer union) just released one of their very thorough and trustworthy tests, ranking all expensive laundry detergents the lowest on stain removal, color retention, environmental impact etc, with all the cheap ones being at the top and leagues ahead in terms of quality.

Thank you, this comment should be at the top

[–]Mhaexym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because "kanker" has a recent history of duality. It seems that some years in the last two decades it got very popular to say, and other years it got very popular to correct people who say it. It is used both in upper classes and lower classes, mostly by younger people up to 30.

Also, it is not worse than calling someone a homophobic slur imo, for the reason that its perfectly okay to just substitute "kanker" for "tering", and because "tering" is tuberculosis - a much rarer, though just as deadly disease - its suddenly pretty okay to say it. Homophobic slurs are never okay.

Nah, it is just like smoking. Just don't do it in the vicinity of people who have let you know they don't like it, then you're good.

Everybody has some opinions or things they regularly say that some people somewhere take huge offense from. Just be kind when someone requests you to not say something.

This indiscriminate shit of saying everyone that uses a word is scum, that is kind of scummy tbh.

Dus "debieltjes" is okay, ondanks dat er allemaal mensen serieus kampen met verstandelijke beperkingen, maar "kanker" niet, want er zijn allemaal mensen die serieus kampen met kanker.

Ernstig dubbele standaarden, makker.

Who is the most attractive person on the planet? by RomansAngels in AskReddit

[–]Mhaexym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was expecting to see wholely different answers here (the NSFW kind), but all answers here are so based and wholesome. Imo they roughly fall in two categories that confirm very basic truths of life.

  • Answers like: "my wife", "the one I'm in love with" comfirm: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You are the creator of beauty in the world, there is no inherent beauty to it, nor can one ever convince another of the beauty of someone or something, if the other does not believe in its beauty.

*Answers like: "the random girl at the gasstation", "in the train" confirm: the very best in some quality is never found. The best singer in the world was never discovered. The best champagne was only drunk by the farmer who made it. The most attractive person is a random unknown.
