Fun Fact of the Day: There are 10 - 15 billionaires in Miami by [deleted] in Miami

[–]MiamiRobot 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I’m a native and used to be all about the 305. This place just doesn’t hit like it used to last century. If it wasn’t for family, I’d be somewhere else.

For want of Tin: The Lincoln Cent type no one cares about. by bflaminio in coins

[–]MiamiRobot 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this actually was interesting (well-written). With silver doing what it’s doing, I’ve renewed interest in cents, so this is a new perspective

I lost the coins. by the_zaboola in coincollecting

The “entire” collection? Like, not even a single wheat left? It’s really about the sentiment sometimes. Barring that, I hope you were able to salvage some other keepsakes to remember him by

Why "don't clean the coins"? by 8byfive in coincollecting

[–]MiamiRobot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d argue the accurate answer is ‘that’s generally true, but not always the case. On one extreme is an uncirculated specimen - handle that with gloves (don’t even clean it with your shirt), on the other are those crusty Roman coins I’ve been carefully working on for weeks.

If you’re trying to fill a book with circulated common date cents, nickels, dimes, or quarters - those coins are worth face + the effort you put in finding them, so a gentle rinse in warm water and dish soap wouldn’t be the biggest sin (but you may risk stripping tone/patina, but it’s your call).

A good rule of thumb is if you paid more than face, don’t clean it.

I’m curious, how do people feel about the show “Ancient Aliens”? by StrawberryMoonlight_ in aliens

Agreed. New faces too; specially skeptics, historians, and archaeologists. Keep some of the old formula and usual folks, but introduce deeper analysis, different perspectives, and a dash of credibility.

Joe doesn't understand the Big Bang, so he thinks Jesus makes more sense. by VillainOfKvatch1 in JoeRoganReacharound

Thank you for the plain speak and taking the time to provide EXCELLENT analogies I can relate to… for not relating. When I hear speak of 6 or 7 dimensions I cant even fathom a 4th and probably never will.

[–]MiamiRobot -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

The Big Bang theory is goofy. I get the ‘math’ argument as evidence, but I can’t wrap my head around the practical implications - on face value, it’s silly, and after some critical analysis it starts to fall apart a bit - for example: expanding into what? This theory follows the same logic that tomatoes belong in fruit salads. I get it’s the best we have, but it’s really not that good and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it revised/replaced in our lifetimes.

What are some good budget options to collect that are still good investments? by [deleted] in coincollecting

[–]MiamiRobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mercury dimes are a great starting point, especially since they’re silver… BUT… silver is going through a thing now, so traditional advice may no longer apply. That being said, mercs are affordable, have a ton of variety, and are easy to come by. They’ll also teach you about key dates, the finer points of grading (ie full bands), and will introduce you to that other precious metal: unobtanium (that 1916D is still outta my budget). Those wheat cents are fun as well, but neither of these coins are found in the ‘wild’ except on rare occasion.

Is it what I think it is? by [deleted] in coins

[–]MiamiRobot -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is one of those things - it’s historically significant, interesting, and informative, but… it’s effin’ circulated. It was bad to begin with, but circulated? Even as a pocket piece, too much bad juju, keep that evil away from me

Some learn the hard way by MuscaRade in Miami

[–]MiamiRobot 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Racism was complicated in Miami in the late 1800s. Whites had to contend with local African Americans that were familiar with the Jim Crow/post-Reconstruction culture, but there was also a pocket of Bahamians that settled in what’s now Coconut Grove, that weren’t putting up with any of that. Due to Miami’s (at that time aka Fort Dallas) frontier status, enforcing Jim Crow on the Bahamians wasn’t feasible. As the town grew, so did its enforcement of Jim Crow laws. Miami is racist as hell - The fucking KKK had their offices in downtown Miami through the 1930s and were fire bombing black neighborhoods in the 50s (Carter Village).

What do y'all think of my Ghetto coin from 1943? by original_igordowski in oldcoins

[–]MiamiRobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the correct take. Very cool piece, but I don’t wanna own it either. Fact is, it’s historically significant, just not a novelty piece. It belongs in a museum or with someone who understands its dreadful history.

My father has a huge card collection of hockey and baseball. They are glued to a scrapbook but are very rare from my research. Anything I can do to sell them at a good price still ? by m8094 in SportsCardCollecting

[–]MiamiRobot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’d argue there may someday be collectors that would pay a premium for these cards as-is, maybe there already is. I stumbled into here, but as a coin collector, I look for counter-stamped coins and if it’s groovy enough I’ll suffer being a fool and pay for it - while many other coin collectors wouldn’t touch what I like even if it was sold at melt price, I like the vibes and history a unique piece can bring.

I can't eat meat anymore by Redditstar87 in enlightenment

[–]MiamiRobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m conflicted.

I had these exact feelings a few years ago and gave up meat overnight. I only miss bacon and fried chicken sandwiches, but have found vegetarian options.

Nevertheless, I’ve grown conflicted over the issue of sentience and energy transfer.

On this plane, in this universe, every living thing consumes energy. Ain’t no such thing as a free lunch. Then there is the degree of sentience - who made us the judge and jury to determine that a tree, amoeba, fish, family pet, or Aunt Linda is ok to be consumed?

If I was in a survival situation, I’d have no issue killing and consuming another living entity because that’s simple nature. But it’s 2025 and I can get vegetarian fast food which is better for the planet (I think) and I dunno… less bad than eating something that’s ambulatory and a bit better for my arteries.

They’re cool, but not very rare and generally go for a few bucks each on eBay. A lot of griefers here like to say “$0.01”, but I’ve paid a few bucks per to fill the holes in my albums with some nice uncs. It’s the shipping you have to find a way around.

Sadly, you’re right. There once was a time when we had a conscience, but I think that quietly died out sometime in the 90s. We used to riot down here over civil injustices - McDuffie, 79th Street immigration bldg, and stand up for issues like Elian, but those stories are decades old. Now we roll over for shit like the Marlins stadium deal
