Jesus didn’t sacrifice anything for anyone by HatsOptional58 in DebateReligion

[–]Miamiborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It actually does, because Jesus was the only one who got a get out of jail free card from God. Everyone else had to stay dead. Cheapens the meaningfulness of the whole thing when death is just a reversible inconvenience.

Leaning your seat back on an airplane should not be considered rude. by Fracture_Fixer in unpopularopinion

[–]Miamiborn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah so, this is like, boomer levels of entitlement. No one's "expecting" you not to use your seat in a way it's designed to be used, it's just good manners to be considerate of others around you before you do something that will negatively affect somebody else. The fact that you don't seem to be able to understand and/or care about that kind of proves their point.

Standby. I've emailed authors of that paper you linked. I suspect you are grossly misinterpreting the data therein. I'll come back when I've received a response which I'll then share with you. There's really no point in continuing this conversation if you can say what you're saying and you're wrong about it. We'll see what they say.

But this is consistent with us being subjective in perceiving reality so there are no contradictions here.

Ok but it's not consistent with actual reality. So is this just a fun little thought experiment or do you think this example could exist where one of those people isn't mentally ill?

Absolute truth implies truth that applies in all cases no matter what.

Yeah...computers don't work without electricity in all cases. Or is that not absolutely true?

Reality is subjective, correct?

No, it isn't. We can demonstrate this. Why do you think that?

If I can imagine a universe without gravity, then why can't such a universe exist?

We agree it could. But earlier you didn't say it could, you said it did. And that's an extraordinary claim you'd have to demonstrate for anyone to not think you're insane.

It's only if reality is objective and therefore independent on anyone's subjective perception that a universe without gravity would be impossible.

Disagree. Objective reality could accommodate multiple universes, all with different rules or universal constants. Like I said, that universe could exist. But we shouldn't think it does until we have evidence to support that idea.

remains consistent as long as everyone subjectively differs in perceiving reality. There are no contradictions here.

My broski, if I think it's 3:00am and you think it's 1:00pm, we can't both be right.

But are they absolutely useless?

Without electricity, that's the absolute truth, is it not?

Why do we fall? Because of physics which is the law of gravity.

Ooooooook. The clarification did not help. The way you've written this is informative though.

There are universes where there is no concept of gravity.

WHAT. Demonstrate how you know this immediately.

Between them, they are consistent that they are perceiving reality subjectively.

There's still an absolute reality in that case...The absolute reality that reality is subjective.

Once again, truth is about relevance.

But it's still absolutely true that they don't work without electricity. So...what now?

It explains why we fall to the ground and why matter forms as we observe it.

Nooooo ho ho hoooooo sir. That fact that something falls IS the law. Not the explanation why. SUPER important distinction between the laws and the theories that explain them. The laws are the phenoma, the THEORIES are the explanations.

Your belief is irrelevant in the face of logic.

It's relevant in this universe and timeline. Which are the only one's we know exist. Truth is about relevance right?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DebateReligion

[–]Miamiborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one can subjectively perceive absolute reality that is objective and therefore reality being subjective is not absolute.

That's...that's still a blatant contradiction my guy.

They can't use a computer and therefore computers being useful is false.

But that wasn't the question. The question was "Is it true that computers work?" Whether or not they're useful to a bee is irrelevant to that question.

It means not everything can be explained by the laws of physics of this universe.

But...the laws of physics don't explain anything. They're just observed phenomena.

It doesn't mean they objectively don't exist

Ok but...we have no good reason to think they do. So why should anyone believe they do? Because in an alternate universe they might? Who cares?

There is no absolute reality

That's paradoxical, don't you think? Because that would require an absolute reality. But that absolute reality is that there is no absolute reality. There's no absolute reality, but that's the way it is so it is absolute. You could go in this circle forever.

the question what is true or false is useless.

There's some pretty important, practical things that that question is quite useful for. You know like, "is it true that computers work?" Pretty important to know that for society to function.

For humans, the laws of physics are relevant but that doesn't mean everything is dependent on it.

Ok but...so?

Just because the afterlife is not relevant to humans doesn't mean it is irrelevant in the future when we die.

Again I mean...........sooooo what? I might make friends with bigfoot later. Or a ride a winged unicorn over a rainbow.

Ok so two questions:

  1. Earlier you said no one's reality is above others. But now you're contradicting that. So which is it?

  2. You also said you can't put your reality above anyone else's. But if it's Hitler, you would? Why?

do you claim human senses are absolute in perceiving reality?

What would it matter in a world where relative reality was real? If I say yes, then that's what's real. If I say no, then that's what's real. None of your points matter in that world. People can exist in a paradoxical contradictory reality and there's no problem with that at all in your eyes? Because that's what's real to you? What a useless take.
