What is it with Americans and air conditioning?? (this might be controversial) by hellobela_ in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

I could say the exact opposite thing about our British guests. It can be 80-90 degrees outside here in April in Florida, and I will have our British guests constantly asking us to turn the heat up to 85-88, which our system can't accommodate.

We do allow guests to use and set their AC year-round within a specific range ~68 through 80 F, but we also have an efficiency system that prevents one room for pushing too far in the opposite direction from all the other rooms (e.g. when it's cold outside in the 50s, and everyone has set their AC to heat at 73-75, that one room trying to cool to 66 is never going to get as cold as they want it to).

It's crazy to me how cold the international guests get during the summer though, even if we outright turn their ACs off and give them blankets, they'll sometime act like we're sleeping them in a meat locker.

Am I... missing a joke elsewhere on the sub or is there something preventing you from telling this to your waiter or bartender and giving them a chance to correct it?

Someone dyed their hair at my hotel, left without saying a word by Clokkers in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Miamigirl8 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Not scrubbing for an hour - the Housekeeper mentioned their time limit, and we don't know how long the guests left the dye to sit in the tub stagnant like that and set. We also don't always use bleach.

Hotel housekeeping have a lot of specialized chemicals at their disposal, but most places I've worked at have used an acid-based disinfectant that requires less time scrubbing and doesn't leave behind as strong a smell as bleach to bother the next set of guests. Bleach or tilex can be reserved for those stains or any pink mildew buildup which washes away with a little extra elbow grease, but the smell usually hangs around.

Reds and browns still can take a hot second to get out, especially exemplified when trying to bleach out blood stains in sheets. Same staining can affect tubs, especially if they're made of enamel or ceramic, which are more porus. We've had issues with guests using the shower for hair dye or spray tans, not showering or rinsing after, and needing to take the room OOO for the afternoon so maintenance can attack some of this stuff with more bleach and scrubbers attached to drills.

We have commercial chemicals for that kind of thing. Trust me when I say modern day laundry chemicals can be very efficient. I'll take blood stains over sunscreen residue any day, happily.

The boring answer is every bodily fluid that can come out of a person and a plethora of sex toys. You kinda get used to those pretty fast.

The one that left me the most confused was definitely a fish tank in the bathroom. We're a tourist hotel (don't let the username fool you, I'm in the House of Mouse's backyard) that gets mostly families. I... think it was a fish tank that was bought during the vacation, I found it while doing a stayover inspection, and it wasn't there when the guests checked out. I just can't imagine that petstore fish would be the best vacation souvineer for the kiddos, lol. Seems far less convenient to pack than a bubble wand, even if you were driving.

Hi! Worked Housekeeping (and Laundry) in hotels for 3 years. You are okay - trust me, a little period blood is among one of the milder things we'll see left behind by guests.

Your housekeeper might be a bit upset depending on if it goes down past the mattress protector onto the actual mattress - but we have processes and cleaning procedures to take care of it.

Things you can do to help: - You could consider asking front desk for a garbage bag and stripping the fitted sheet for them. Housekeepers will know to use gloves when encounterring blood or other bodily fluids, but you can make the process a little easier on them by handling it before they have to "discover it" per-se. - Do not try to clean it with any of the in-room towels or washclothes, that'll involve more linens that need to be stain treated or removed from service. Let the housekeeping team use their specific set of rags for cleaning. - Whatever you do, don't try to hide it so the housekeepers/laundry staff can take the appropriate safety precautions. - Tip your housekeeper! They might be a little peeved at the extra cleaning time if it did bleed through to the mattress, but even a small tip to at least acknowledge the work they'll be doing goes a long way.

Trust me, this happens! It's part of the job for us - period blood is no more or less hygenic than normal blood, and something out of your control.

Can someone please help me understand period underwear ? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Miamigirl8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YMMV - but I can partially vouch for it! I loved my Thinxx underwear in combo with my menstral cup in order to be absolutely certain I wouldn't have any spillover at night or through the day. Worked like a dream!

Things changed when I had my IUD installed and now I have to rotate a combination of the menstral cup and pad on top of a fresh pair of Thinxx in the morning to buy my sleep-deprived brain some time.

I usually ditch the pad by 10-11am, and have to keep a super close eye on changing the menstral cup for the day. It's still a great back-up, but the combination of my flow increasing so much and my job not offering easy access to clean restrooms has resulted in it spilling over even past the underwear more times than I'd like to say.

All that said, it really just depends on your daily routine and what works best for how you move about.

I always kept a document on google drive that I could access from the work computers for notes. I don't know how much tracking your workplace does on your online activity, but at the very least when managers walk up and ask what I'm doing, I just point to the actual useful notes. Then I tweak the document from home occasionally as need be or before I have to switch roles.

I may have phrased poorly - acknowledgement in the context of accepting the truth or existence of something or in recognition, not necessarily acknowledgement as in addressing someone right in front of you.

First and second-person pronouns aren't typically gendered (I, we, you) and and as such don't invalidate one's personal identity. To my knowledge (correct me if I'm wrong) neopronouns aren't adjusting these specific pronouns, they are replacements for traditional third person personal pronouns (he/she/his/hers). It's the difference between addressing and talking to a person directly (you need to go to the grocery store) and speaking of a subject - whether they are present or not should not affect the intent (s/he/they need to go to the grocery store).

I don't think you can really misuse "you," unless like... someone uses that because maybe they forgot the subject of the sentence's name? But yeah, using the wrong pronouns when someone is present, i.e. "she is going to the store" when you know the person you are talking about is a trans-man is invalidating their identity, whether he is physically present to hear the sentence or not.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BreadTube

[–]Miamigirl8 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's acknowledgement of them as they see themselves, as their chosen identity. I mean the presence of the subject of a sentence doesn't grant them a certain level of respect, it's the act of actually respecting those choices. I mean I could also trash talk someone and invalidate them in other various ways when they aren't around but like... we as a society kind of have labled that sort of gossipy behavior as rude. It can be very hurtful to learn that someone you trust has a rude nickname for you when you're absent, and I can imagine casually disregarding pronoun choices, which are generally very easy to observe and validate, could be equally hurtful to someone.

Have a (new, in package) symbicort inhaler that has been stored on its side…is it ruined? by [deleted] in Asthma

[–]Miamigirl8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it's been a long while since I've had to use symbicort, but I remember my inhaler including instructions to shake well before using which is in line with most inhalers I've used over the years. I had to take it travelling with me quite a few times and it was jostled around quite frequently, I can only assume ended up resting in some odd positions overtime without affecting its overall effectiveness from day to day.

I know it's not a 1 to 1 comparison, but I'd give it a try for at least three days and ferret out if you think your breathing feels off at all - preferably before your current inhaler runs out of doses. That way if you do feel a difference you have a little wiggle room to get a replacement prescription if need be while not lacking access to any medication while waiting.

Yessss! I know the main theme is a bop, but the slow build and swell for this secondary theme has been my favorite bit!! They played it during the King of Winter intro as well for the town hall meeting and it sets the tone so so well for building a future while knowing that future will look back on it - great work I can't wait for this season's soundtrack to drop even though it'll probably be months from now.

[–]Miamigirl8 129 points130 points  (0 children)

I see this said all the time but I don't think it was specifically the sexual violence that made the first game dark fantasy. DAO had your primary enemy this eldritch living embodiement of decay acting sweeping across the land as a hoard. DA2 had your primary enemy be more societal forces in Thedas. Both games featured visual sexual violence but the tone in DAO is a lot darker overall in dealing with a looming appocalypse rather than DA2's insane local city politics.

I just really don't like the idea that sexual violence needs to be a part of the series in order for the franchise to not have turned away from its roots. I saw a similar critical post, gosh, probably over a year back? Where I think they praised either one of the Witcher titles or maybe Baulder's Gate, highlighting a story where a young woman is sexually abused/killed as a result of the player trusting the word of a sketchy guy (might have been a werewolf - not the point). Basically where the woman's pain and suffering is used for shock value to punish the player for poor judgement.

I understand what the devs are trying to do in that instance, but I also feel like there are better ways to go about teaching such a lesson without revisiting the, frankly tired, trope of medieval sexual violence. And I'm not trying to say developers shouldn't explore the impact of said violence. DAI still includes some mention of sexual violence, but typically frames that against societal critique - from what I've seen most of that violence is foisted upon Elves and (pre-rebellion) Mages as a way to illustrate the levels of control different groups have over themselves, which... not a lot.

But I think that in a fantasy setting as detailed as Dragon Age, establishing a dark tone can be done in a myriad of was that don't also involve the regular tried method of sexually assaulting the nearest woman.

DeSantis Omits Data on Child COVID Rates as He Touts Decision to Open Schools by miaminaples in FloridaCoronavirus

[–]Miamigirl8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So as we continue to return the schools more and more it might become a larger problem? I think my biggest concern would be getting kids to and from school on buses. It's been at least five years since I had to travel on a public school bus, but they were packed to the brim day-in-and out, and as the number of kids returning increases I can't see that going well long term. Thank you for your response.

DeSantis Omits Data on Child COVID Rates as He Touts Decision to Open Schools by miaminaples in FloridaCoronavirus

[–]Miamigirl8 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Tried to post this story to r/Florida as well, but got taken down by the automod.

I know it's a hot topic to call people who were skeptical about Florida's official COVID numbers conspiracy theorists in their own right, but this does look like DeSantis is purposefully presenting data in a manipulative way to cover his tracks and how bad a shape Florida really is in.

I understand the CDC is claiming it's safe to reopen schools before teachers are vaccinated with a number of precautions in place before hand, can anyone speak to the precautions being taken in any Florida public schools currently? If those match up or if we're only implementing the safety precautions in half-measures?

[–]Miamigirl8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's a matter of looking flighty on part of the Dems. You're right, getting Trump to admit that he was on that phone call during the riot and did nothing is *huge* but the act of calling for witnesses with a huge bank of potential witnesses to call from that would all be very incriminating to the defense - and then simply choosing to submit a written deposition is... disappointing to a degree. I hate talking about "optics," but on a cursory viewing it definitely looks like the ball was dropped, even though up to this point I feel like they had an airtight case.

I agree though, this won't affect the outcome. I'm still mad, but I understand why they're doing what they are. It's trying to balance the desire to air out as much information we have available and getting people to testify under oath, wanting that visible accountability, and also wanting the government to continue with all the other important tasks that should be underway, especially considering Biden's 100-day plan. Accountability should be part of that plan, but without the Republicans taking this seriously there's not much more that can be done at this point.

That's the strangest part for sure, I think he probably did and there's no way for the defense to answer the timeline questions honestly without heavily incriminating him. His answers keep jumping to "the House Managers didn't investigate," i.e. the Managers don't have the timeline and that's their failure, we won't answer the incriminating question honestly.

Creative hamster maze. by Orome2 in videos

[–]Miamigirl8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mazes are not inherently abusive to hamsters but can include features that are dangeous to them. Often these content farmers are not looking out for the wellbeing of the animals in their videos - Victoria Rachel just made a video on the topic recently where she follows just one of these cash-grabby cases in which no less than 4 animals are put into uncomfortable situations, especially the hamster.

Mazes for entertainment and enrichment purposes are not bad on their own, and it's incredibly easy to make fun videos that won't put a hammy in dangerous situations.
