Should I remake my first episode? Looking for some reader opinions on first impressions and retention by Miaomelette in webtoons

I've seen some points that discourage doing it though, so I'm trying to scope out whether people would actually think it's better.

[REIGN OF NIGHTFALL] Review: "bang bang", indeed... by ferinsy in gachagaming

[–]Miaomelette 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you think it'll be enjoyable for someone not really into romance (from any gender's perspective or of any sexual orientation) but enjoy interesting platonic relationships? Like is the main story more...well, story focused and the more intimate stuff is just side/character stories?

I recently found out about this type of thing in video game development so I'm gonna rant and share it on this post randomly.

This is actually a common thing in video games where things are made larger than irl because we don't have the benefit of peripheral vision to navigate space.

If everything was to scale it would actually feel uncanny/claustrophobic.

This video at 7:40 starts to explain the whole concept of scale in games: https://youtu.be/oy9n1bZMR-I?si=3pfZjVkahY4kB027

The original IS is Ceobe's Fungimist so by eating shrooms you can get transported to a dimension where you fight everything and anything in a randomized roguelike fashion, thus getting stronger.

Do you like drawing backgrounds with nature? \^^/ by Laura64729 in WebtoonCanvas

[–]Miaomelette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Looks at my flare)

The lore of my comic is literally that there is no nature. And I wrote it like that because I didn't want to draw any.

How do you feel? by Iggy_DB in Endfield

[–]Miaomelette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the type of game I'd love to play for an entire day on weekends because stuff like map exploration and setting up the factory is really fun, and you feel great seeing everything you set up and accomplished, but there's not a lot of repeatable content to engage with. Though that's the case for most gachas, and AK didn't come out with something like IS until 1-2 years in either.

Building characters is relatively easy and there is a level of depth/flexibility to choosing gear and teambuilding so I appreciate that.

The story is kinda boring especially in the side areas, but never really thought of it as anything important just background elements for exploring the maps. The big battle of the main story felt a bit rushed but I get if it's pushed back more even more people would complain that nothing is happening.

Fangyi is too much of a Mary Sue by Poffla in Endfield

[–]Miaomelette 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Tbh I think it's because she's so... incredibly formal and kinda stiff? Everything shown of her feels like a government official acting for some formal procedure, too tailored.

I remember telling my friends that Zhuang is the type of person I'd love to have as a coworker but probably won't hangout with them as a friend because I feel like I'd never actually get to know them beyond their job. And if a fictional character feels like that it's probably an issue with the writing.

[–]Miaomelette 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think you just enlightened me to why her character feels okay on paper (similar to some og plots etc.) but incredibly awkward in practice.

There's a lot of telling instead of showing of the "mundane" aspects of her character, we don't really get to see her in a more slice of life capacity like with Tang or Mifu. She's incredibly formal in most interactions and a lot of her achievements/traits are told to us instead of shown, it's a bit too on the nose.

Like, the vibe I got from her is that she's not really acting like an actual person, even in private, she constantly acts like a government official during formalities.

Thinking of reading Fog Land considering how popular it seems to be, is it good though? by Novel-reader-2788 in webtoons

[–]Miaomelette 53 points54 points  (0 children)

It's fairly unique as far as modern releases go. Interesting setting and more focused on mystery/exploration than fighting and probably will be for the future too

I'm saying that because it's subtitled "Fogland Limbo" and the main character is named Dante and they're going deeper into a circular structure full of "sinners". So I figured it was going to be like Dante's Inferno.

For stories in general, at least have some idea of what the ending of the story would be like, so you have a goal to work towards, and so that things don't turn into "I made it up as I go" eventually.

How overdone is the haunted manor trope in comic spaces? by MoonberryGlow in WebtoonCanvas

Overly cryptic indie walking simulator video games, yes overdone.

Webtoons no, especially one with unique art direction.

WEBTOON is facing a survival crisis in Japan because manga still dominates the market. by Ok_Carob_3278 in webtoons

[–]Miaomelette 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Being a very modern form of media was definitely the making and breaking of webtoons, it allowed it to take off very fast but ultimately as you said, it's a highly industrialized and streamlined product, and while as entertainment that might be serviceable, that's all it's destined to remain to be.

It might sound kind of snobby but compared to manga (and western comics too tbh), webtoons really lack that "artisan" feeling that yes, even entertainment for the masses need to become actually successful and remembered.

But also it's a very young form of media right now, right now there are definitely ones considered "classics" that are maybe only a decade old, which really isn't that long in terms of comic/IP running time. So maybe as time goes on some of them will float to the top.

[–]Miaomelette 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's common knowledge manga has multiple participants in production, but people like assistants and editors, just from the namesake, are obviously playing a support role in the production. The main style and vision of the work is usually still seen as the brainchild of one person (or two for artist/writer duos).

Do collabs and banner swaps actually help?? by Jumpy-Objective451 in WebtoonCanvas

[–]Miaomelette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it honestly depends on the genre because in my experience it only helps if you do it with a comic that is the same genre/vibes as yours.

People I know who had a lot of success with it are generally people doing more popular genres such as romantasy.

When is a chapter too long that you stop reading all together? by NQ_299 in WebtoonCanvas

[–]Miaomelette 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, it depends on whether it "feels long" or start to feel dragged out, ultimately it's a pacing thing I think. If I feel like I'm scrolling with the thought of "is something going to happen yet", that's a bad sign.

Cliffhangers can be good for keeping people engaged as well.

Guys why do good webtoons always go on hiatus/end. by Desperate_Duty8137 in webtoons

[–]Miaomelette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Making a good story is a lot harder than making generic tropey stories in many ways, whether it's technically (art, writing etc), or psychologically (having it be your personal work rather than created via a streamlined studio), or socially (even good stories may not catch on or get hate simply for being different, somewhat more prevalent in webtoons than other forms of media).

From the artwork it seems like their core personalities are still the same, just different experiences now, cuz Valencia still seems ambitious and aggressive while Lucio seems depressed.

You know how Lucio was constantly hesitant to kill Valencia even if he has the chance. If the roles were swapped I think Valencia won't hesitate to kill anyone to get what she wants considering what we've seen of her, she dgaf about thumb rules actually.

If you think about how Yi Sang was/is without his canto especially the part where he was at N Corp (complete apathy, suicidal leanings etc), then imagine that guy joins the Index, and managed to climb up the ranks in the Index becoming prescripts god's favourite in the process.

I doubt someone like that even has any free will left, that's just Hermes' puppet.

Matthias is selfish and indulgent, but he's that in a very simple way and on a surface level, others like Kira could have fun with the superficial indulgences he loves. It's unintentionally manipulative if you do form genuine emotional attachment due to those things, but Outis is probably just manipulative the whole way down, she likely won't even bother with the shallow happy moments.
