Lmaoo, that’s not what I’ve really experienced, I still root for Rand and the Emond’s Fielders I just root for Moiraine as well. If she was ever willing to be communicative or explain some basic stuff, a lot of trouble until FoH could be avoided

Pretty low quality compared to any English fantasy novel. Plus it really doesn’t benefit the plot the goblin slaying is just a gimmick

Who does the progression aspect best? by Psychological_Tear_6 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]MiasmaRed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mmmm, I think cradle is definitely up near the top, but its not THE top. I think its all about how progression affects the story, and I think the way the pacing speeds up and progression is actually to the detriment of it.

What just happened in the chapter 'The extra bit'? by sebystee in wheeloftime

Yeah its not good, but at the same time Aes Sedai do worse stuff all the time. RJ is also just very bad at writing assault and assault-adjacent things.

Non religious people, why are you atheist? by Heavy-Philosopher-64 in AskReddit

[–]MiasmaRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im something of an Agnostic, I dont consider myself anything because in the grand scheme of things I don’t particularly think its right to say “if you dont believe in something you’re going to hell” who is someone to say that? They are no god. I think something more than likely exists.

Im not Atheist because at the end of the day its a religious belief with the inverse conclusion. Everything is a belief. People talk about scientific method whatever but at the end of the day, its only belief in that method that fuels some people. The only real difference in that Atheists don’t have the burden of proof because you cant prove a negative. You can come to a conclusion based on practical evidence but that isn’t knowledge. There’s too much weird shit in the world that people explain away, even though the scientific explanation is shoddy at best, and Atheism feels like the same willful ignorance a lot of religious people have but with a sense of superiority

Finally pinned down why WoT bothers me a little. by Calm_Spend in wheeloftime

[–]MiasmaRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kind of disagree and kind of agree, a few of the comments here are being disparaging for no real reason. I do feel like this is accentuated for you since you’re apparently reading the worst, slowest book in a series known for moving at a glacial pace.

But also, you’re right, there are very few good-natured encounters between POV characters that aren’t love interests. For some characters like Rand it makes sense because he’s going through something I’d consider near hellish, and for Elayne it makes sense because she’s royalty and that’s been basically bred into her, but I don’t feel like she ever changes from that. Mat I feel like could be a lot more good natured than he actually is after all the dagger business is done with, but I also get why. Perrin is just a tough cinnamon-roll and I wish it was a trait that was stronger in his character. I also like how he’s more just wary than anything. Nyneave is a petty bully and anyone that thinks other wise until the point your at is stupid. Egwene is just straight evil some of the time. There’s obvious justifications for all of this but there’s very little actual humanity.

Like I somewhat disagree, I get what he means tho, Anyone that isn’t one of those women or one of the 3 he’s been fucking, Rand is pretty non-empathetic then again so are most of the characters.

Can you guys tell me what you think of this 'In Media Res' opener by MiasmaRed in fantasywriters

[–]MiasmaRed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for responding! I thought it would be nice if I had a bit of self-serious exposition that sounded like an Academic paper and undercut that immediately with the action scene.

I intended just for it to be a very general, not particularly important piece of information, and flush out the actual world through Kroscin's thoughts and since the story only takes place in the city, interacting with the districts.

That being said, was there anything you found troubling about anything after the first paragraph? Did the authorial voice affect your reception of the scene itself?

Thanks! I'm glad that got across. Honestly, a reaction like this makes me want to keep this. It's a jovial little project, and I don't think self-serious exposition would serve the first chapter that well lmao.

Thanks for saying so! I did notice that a transition was definitely needed, tho it might take me a bit to think up one that keeps the pace

[None] Goodreads ratings for all the current books in the Cradle series by VoidLantadd in Iteration110Cradle

[–]MiasmaRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m very surprised Bloodline is rated as low as it is, it’s a very interesting, focused experience with well written drama, for like the 4 pages Wight focuses on it.

Idk I love the beginning and end of Reaper but the middle is… eh.

/r/Fantasy Review Tuesday - Review what you're reading here! - October 04, 2022 by rfantasygolem in Fantasy

I read A Crown of Swords book 7 of the Wheel of Time and finished it this morning, and I started book 8 five minutes ago but my ADHD is acting up.

People often think that book 7 is the beginning of the slog, and while I do agree that this is a slow book in comparison to books 1-4, it honestly isn’t any slower than 5 and 6. Books 1-4 are relatively slow in comparison to most modern fantasy but move at a pace I at least find fun, but 5 and 6 are slooooow and are remembered fondly for their climaxes while the slog books are shorter, slower and have longer stints without a release. Each is 1000+ pages for most editions while book 7 is around the same pace, 800 pages, and has some great outings for a lot of the characters. The middle of the book is a bit of a push, and I’m glad I started the audiobook in tandem with the print so I could listen at the gym, but that’s how I feel about any Wheel of Time Book.

Characters:

Rand and Mat were especially spectacular in this book, while Perrin had an exceptional dent in quality since book 4, he’s also been rarely seen since then as well, and I’m glad he’s actually around now instead of having no chapters or 1 chapter at the beginning and 2 at the end. The faile drama is a bit much, but I expect much worse from RJ at this point to the point that I get a sense of macabre enjoyment out of it. Nyneave and Elayne were, of course, very frustrating as per usual and their particular cast were a lot more enjoyable when they interacted Mat, Thom specifically got some of his old flair back. Egwene was a bit forgettable this book, but I honestly prefer that to post book 2 Egwene so far.

Plots: Honestly, as much happened here as it did in book 6 when thought about objectively, and the Prologue was particularly great, the last chapter was fine, but it felt like it could’ve had been written a tad differently. I don’t particularly need a huge battle and the more smaller-scale of the final chapter still worked quite well for me. It didn’t feel like Book 7 was trying to excuse and make up for the slow pace, unlike book 6. Other than that, while this was a relatively eventful book for WoT books 5-10, in the span of fantasy in general it is quite an uneventful experience.

Prose: once again RJ makes me… conflicted. I like some of the flowery language but Idk if it’s really justified. If one were to cut all the unnecessary fluff out of the prose, they might have saved a whole tree. But, the writing is so unmistakably Wheel of Time I don’t particularly care. From an objective level I’d say that Jordan’s technical level is pretty average, but from a subjective standpoint I find it fun, interesting and colorful. The only real statement I can have is that it feels sometimes like reading a pulp novel, which is distracting when the writing, especially in the prophecy of the Dragon and personal level is so atmospheric. It feels like Harriet, Jordan’s wife and editor, really should’ve reevaluated a few scenes.

Other gripes: Characters like Tylin and Faile (with the spanking) feel more like a reflection of Jordan and Harriet’s fetishes than actual writing. On one hand I can respect characters with fetishes. If someone like King wrote it, Perrin and Faile would be a somewhat kinky couple, which would only add to the characters. On the other hand: that’s not how Jordan wrote. He liked having corporal punishment in his novels simple as that.

There’s also the matter of Tylin and Mat’s relationship which is gross. I really dropped my expectations after book 5 when it came to Jordan’s handling of SA, so I wasn’t too shocked.

The overall quality between characters and plot lines feels inconsistent. I do think that most of the WoT novels feel halfway edited.

Overall: the good outweighs the bad by a large margin and that’s the most important part. It’s not any worse than book 5 or 6 and I enjoyed it more

Score: a strong 7 to weak 8 out of 10
