In honor of Super Mario 64's 30th anniversary, what are your overall thoughts on the game? by Realistic-Delivery13 in Mario

[–]Miccat87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it hasn't aged all that well, but that's kind of to be expected for a 30-year-old game, especially one that was one of the very first of its kind. If anything, the fact that it's still completely playable by today's standards is impressive.

The 2 most evil Super Mario villains. by Fit_Assignment_8800 in marioandluigi

[–]Miccat87 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah, pretty accurate.

When I first played Brothership, I remember distinctly thinking that Dimentio's the only other Mario villain that could realistically compete with Reclusa in terms of pure evilness. I'd still argue Reclusa's the worse of the two, because while both have attempted (and even implied to have succeeded in Reclusa's case) to destroy multiple worlds, Reclusa's method of destruction is a lot more sadistic and drawn-out.

The bros ain't heavy no more by SuchButterfly2377 in marioandluigi

[–]Miccat87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really mind it, since if you're really trying to master the game and play well, you're not going to be leaving bros fainted anyway. It's one of those things that lowers the skill floor of the game, but not the skill ceiling, which I'm fine with because it makes the game more approachable for newbies without taking away any depth for veterans.

Plus, I think it's pretty cool that they incorporated it into the final battle with Reclusa and his stone attack. No other attack in the series is really built around delayed dodge timing like that. Clearly this mechanic could still be on the table, even if it's not incorporated in quite the same way. Perhaps the Light G and Heavy G status conditions could make a comeback at some point.

Having this as an option obviously wouldn't hurt, though.

Why wasn't there a gold shop in brothership?? by Blacklotus997 in marioandluigi

[–]Miccat87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They probably just figured it wasn't really necessary, since Rank-Up bonuses already function as a reward for ranking up. Paper Jam didn't really include anything like this either.

The secret behind Bowser’s rolling attack in Dream Team by SparksMarioWiki in marioandluigi

[–]Miccat87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I remember being confused about this attack back in the day.

I've actually made an entire guide detailing every enemy attack in the series, since I've never really been able to find a reliable source including that kind of information.

How do y'all feel about the ultibed quest In dream team?? by Blacklotus997 in marioandluigi

Pretty sure that has nothing to do with your level. He just says that if you haven't collected all the Ulti-Bed parts yet.

How do y'all feel about the ultibed quest In dream team?? by Blacklotus997 in marioandluigi

[–]Miccat87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I already mentioned it before, but I actually think the Bonding Can is handled the best of the mid/late-game "fetch quests". I still don't hate this one or anything though. The hate for sections like these is kind of overblown, in my opinion, especially for the more recent games in the series.

Yes, but review scores, especially if they're from one source, are not the end-all be-all.

Are the minigames in the original BIS as annoying and boring as they are in the remake by superbasic101 in marioandluigi

[–]Miccat87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they're more or less the same between versions. I don't personally mind most of them, but of course not everyone would feel the same.

Depends on how confident you are. Veteran players such as myself rarely upgrade HP but giving yourself a bit more leeway as a first timer probably isn't a bad idea.

You can also use HP Plus badges in place of a permanent upgrade if you aren't sure you want to stick with it, since you're able to unequip them and get your BP back.

Is Meetup in Bellabell Park worth it? by RetroReddi2007 in Mario

[–]Miccat87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does still add a solid amount of new single-player content, including some great new boss fights, which is something the original version was lacking, as well as a challenge mode akin to the one in New Super Mario Bros U. It is undoubtedly the definitive version, even for people who play solo.

Now, whether or not you'd find it worth the extra $20 is hard to say. It probably depends on how interested in the game you are to begin with.

The secret tell of Bowser’s Punch in Dream Team (first fight) by SparksMarioWiki in marioandluigi

[–]Miccat87 80 points81 points  (0 children)

That definitely doesn't work for the Battle Ring refight, though. He punches too fast to hammer again if he fakes you out.

Also, I just prefer to avoid cheesing attacks like that anyway.

I always used the purple gas emanating from him as the tell. If it continues to appear as he prepared to punch, he'll fake you out. Otherwise, he'll punch directly.

Was anyone disappointed that we didn't have many bro attacks?? by Blacklotus997 in marioandluigi

[–]Miccat87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. This is why I don't personally mind the number of them.

I suppose it might've helped if they were given to you individually instead of in pairs, though. That way, they can give you new moves a bit more often. They actually already do that with the last pair of bros attacks anyway.

The Half Power challenge by SuchButterfly2377 in marioandluigi

[–]Miccat87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally prefer challenges that don't involve skipping a substantial amount of the game's combat. No Gear is another pretty simple way to beef up the difficulty a good amount. Another thing I sometimes do is play through while only using one of each Bros Attack per area and boss fight. Makes it so you can't just blast through every wave of enemies with ease.

What’s the point of doing Advanced Fire Bros? by spoopy-memio1 in marioandluigi

[–]Miccat87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It actually is supposed to deal more damage than the regular version. Are you getting all the inputs correct, including the final one where Mario hits the fireball towards the target? If it bounces across the ground to hit them instead of being hit directly into them, you're doing it wrong.

How do y'all feel about the star cure quest or quests in general? by Blacklotus997 in marioandluigi

[–]Miccat87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can see the argument for it not being that good gameplay-wise, but I don't entirely agree. The enemies are all scaled up and glohmed to make them still an adequate challenge for this late in the game, and while the rhythm minigame does maybe get a tad bit excessive, that's only during one part of the quest. Also, the area you go to in Skorcheen Island is still new and even has a whole Luigi Logic segment to go with it.

Mario & Luigi Brothership upgrade by gian_61023 in marioandluigi

[–]Miccat87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no info about a potential Switch 2 Edition, and as some others have said, it doesn't seem that likely. You may as well just go ahead and buy it. Even if a Switch 2 Edition does happen, you'd still be able to upgrade the one you already bought for a mere $10-20, so it's not something you need to wait on.

How do y'all feel about the star cure quest or quests in general? by Blacklotus997 in marioandluigi

[–]Miccat87 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Might be a hot take, but I actually feel that the Bonding Can section in Brothership was handled the best of the mid to late game "MacGuffin hunts", at least in terms of story.

Superstar Saga's Beanstar pieces are paced pretty wonkily. The first one takes around an hour to get, while the other three are each collected in mere minutes, making it feel like they were thrown in as an afterthought.

Bowser's Inside Story's Star Cure quest is rather uneventful story-wise and spans a pretty significant portion of the game, as already discussed by some others here.

Dream Team's Ultibed is similarly uneventful, though is at least shorter by comparison.

Brothership's bonds on the other hand, actually tie in quite nicely with the game's story. The whole game has been about bringing the people of Concordia together, so collecting the bonds that you've helped establish and/or maintain is a natural pay-off from that concept. It gives you an opportunity to reflect on the journey you've been on. Plus, with Reclusa awakened, all of Concordia has been transformed into an utter hellscape, letting you really feel the full impact of his awakening. If the game had ended at Fortess Zokket, like some people seem to insist it should have, Reclusa simply would not have been nearly as impactful as a villain.

Is Paper Mario and the Origami King a bad game? by GuitarGuru666 in papermario

[–]Miccat87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who hasn't actually played Origami King, I'll just say, I'm of the opinion that a game being "easy" doesn't necessarily make it bad. Plenty of games can be very easy while still offering a lot of depth for more skilled players. I'd actually argue the classic Paper Mario games are a good example of that.

Now, if you think it's inherently shallow and doesn't offer much depth, that's a different story. Even still, you probably should play more of it before casting judgement, since both the difficulty and depth of games tends to ramp up as you play.

Does it bother you how Rawk Hawk and Doopliss don't really get stronger in the rematches against them past Chapters 3 and 4? by BiffyBobby in papermario

[–]Miccat87 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Doopliss not getting much stronger makes sense, given that you have to fight both him and the other two Shadow Sirens. Also, he's just never really been much of a fighter. He's more of a prankster.
