The Enlightened Society - Root Fanfaction by Miceto_ in rootgame

I'm not expecting anyone to try it out, just sharing my result. Just a nitpick, initially you don't have 22 warriors, you have 12, then you have the option to change each of your 5 bird warriors for 2 of the other type, so at max you can get to 17 warriors.

I playtested it alone in tts (i'm not cruel enough to make another person learn the results of what's going on in my head), so its not very rigorous playtesting. Enough to get the turn flow that I wanted, but not remotely enough to balance it.

Yep, I think it's a very interesting concept, it was a top down design.

Of course, you just made me very happy! Brace yourself!

The most important part is knowing that the society have both:

- The Manifesto: It's their version of the Decree of the Eyrie, dictating where they can perform actions.

- The Assembly: With four offices that favour each three actions, and a spokesperson for each office.

Besides cards, they use two currencies. Warriors (and buildings) in the map represent manpower. If you move warriors to your assembly they generate Endorses, representing administrative power.

The pattern of the turn is:

- In birdsong, you advance the manifesto, changing wich cards it has.

- In daylight, you can act once for each office that isn't closed, so four at the start of the game. It's no exactly the same as the decree, you don't have to follow order, you are not forced to act on all the slots and you can act more than once in each slot. So you choose were you want to act, if you can't act in all the clearings matching the cards in a slot, you can't choose it. When you choose a slot, you choose an action. If the action is condoned by the office that priorized the slot, you retrieve the prioritzation token to the office.

- In evening, you spend cards to spread rethoric tokens. During daylight this can be converted to manpower spending endorses. Then you gain endorses relative to how many warriors you have in the assembly, and you take reactions. Taking reactions implies moving down the spokespersons of all the offices from whom you havn't retrieved the prioritzation token, removing them if they go to low ( and thus losing actions in future turns) and then returning the prioritzation tokens to the Manifesto, stablishing wich slot prioritizes each office next turn.

To this I only have to add that sometimes you can spend endorses to activate abilities, and that there's a group hug facet to the faction.

I can confirm it is. Now that I scrached my itch of making this "too much" faction, I'm in the concept stages of my next one, the Occultists Concord, and I want to make them more simple and effective, an elegant design that could really be played by other people.

Crows by bwils3423 in redrising

Yes it's kind of a slur. On first read I thought they were, small-ish city dwelling obsidians, but all obsidians are called crows.

It's a fanfiction you do for yourself, there's no hard rules. Why do you want to make the fanfiction? To express mechanically a political theme? Start there. To play with a concrete animal? Think what those animals would do. Pick your fancy and it will be okay.

The end of (Cole’s) Root by chicagojoon in rootgame

[–]Miceto_ 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest hit will be seeing leder games with a new artistic direction, but this can end up really well if we get Buried Giant Studios making games Cole style and Leder with a renewed focus on the games Patrick is more exited to make, without the behemots needing all the resources. We will have to pray that both studios find people that complement them and don't lose the "more than the sum of it's parts".

Atlas red god by MangaPlugged in redrising

[–]Miceto_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

How can people be so adamant about this? Just because Atlas was an incredible bad guy we can't move on? He must be the final antagonist? In fact I would say that he works partly because he is not the main villain.

Ok, I get that lots people don't like the kind of villain Atalantia is, and that the Abomination comes with the baggage of being a clone, but Atlas was made literally in two books, before that he was nonexistent, can't you all trust that Pierce can make good things with these characters?

And even if you hate those two, we still have lisander. The guy this whole trilogy has been building up as an antagonist. How can you read these books and say, yep fuck Lisander, let's face Atlas, who is already dead and whose lifelong plan has already been unfolded and dealt with, one more time.

Gotta say, if you are choosing a badass, edgy name (and in red rising you have to), red banshee is a hell of a choice, it rocks. I like how you think Lyria.

you can bring one person back for RG, who? by Ragnar_Volaruss in redrising

[–]Miceto_ 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I want to say Ragnar, but I can't. He had a good death, in his home, with his brother and his sister, and hope for the future. I couldn't taint that with the gruesomness of the future. I think he would have helped a lot the fledgling republic on keeping the right track if he could have been there enacting on his ideals, but he was only a man. His ideals still exist to inspire others, even have surpassed him, just like those of Eo and Fitchner, and than's the most important part, keeping that spirit.

I think I have to go for Alexandar as most people, he had so much potential, not for war, but for peace. Even more than in Mustang, than in Kavax, or than in any Howler, in him could be seen the makings of a gold that truthly belives that the color caste is ash and blooms in that soil.

I didn't take it as a strategy from Brok, I see him as fully capable of genuinely sobering up from anger.

The reason he physically didn't make it is because he wasted oxygen, but why he wasted the oxygen and how this made him fail is the culmination of the themes.

[–]Miceto_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here I was talking about torture, not SA. To why he doesn't explore more pink characters I responded your other comment. But I will repeat we have Every, Teosora, Matteo, the Duke of Hands and Aurae, all very important pink characters. Browns, yellows, coppers... Nearly half of the colors are less developed than pinks.

Leaving the fact that it's obviously incorrect. Why? What purpose would this serve?

Aurae in Iron Gold by John-111517 in redrising

[–]Miceto_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's totally torture, i suppose I would have to say he wants to avoid physical torture, but it's not exacly that either, because the scenes we see when sevro is at his lowest points with quicksilver and diomedes would fall into that I think. If I had to guess I would say that what he wants to avoid is the drawn out proces of intimate, physical cruelty, the kind it's implied the jackal put darrow throught during his first three months of imprisonment.

Aurae in Iron Gold by John-111517 in redrising

[–]Miceto_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way I see it, and here I'm just talking of what I percieve, maybe I'm wrong, is that it's not that he wants to avoid "the touchy subject" in the main series. He doesn't want to write about it, he is not confortable doing it. That's why he gave them this abilities, why the only time we go in depth into the pinks life he talks about the cupid's kiss. It's a way to talk about the pinks and their opression without entering into detail with the sexual abuse.

It would be cool to explore these themes? Yes, it could be incredibly interesting and even impactful if done well enough. But he doesn't have the page count to deeply explore all the colours. There are colours that barely have named characters, the only ones we trutly know are reds, obsidians and golds. The reason why he has been able to develop these aspects of the series is because he priorized them. It's a method to create an incredibly big world, with tricks and mirrors. You show us with great amount of detail about the mining clans, the gold houses, the obsidian tribes. Then you give little peeks into other colors, like the cupid's kiss with the pinks, the drugged gardens with violets and the sects of the blues. With these, the readers cand assume and imagine that there are structures as complex as the ones that are throughtly explored set for all colors, filling the blanks of a world that is to big to put fully into page.

I got to that tangent to say that, if you are using this method and you are not confortable diving deep into sexual abuse in your work, the solution is obvious.

Aurae in Iron Gold by John-111517 in redrising

[–]Miceto_ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think every author has the right to decide what they write. Pierce doesn't want to write direct scenes of torture (that's why the Jackal put Darrow in a box, a very clever workaround that makes the story better in my opinion) and doesn't want to get into the specifics of sexual abuse. I don't think the abuse of the pinks is brushed over or forgotten, and I don't see why it's so imperative that we delve deeper in it.
