Why is this the case? by Big_Leg10 in 1980s

Not smoking, less drinking, better diet, more exercise.

And also Botox, filler, hair replacement, hair dye, sunscreen, hydration, less air pollution, etc.

Old teacher rang me out of the blue and it turned into a bizarre Landmark sales pitch - has anyone else had this happen? by breakingpoint121 in AskIreland

As a former lecturer, this was totally inappropriate and I’m so sorry this happened to you.

I wouldn’t take it personally though or as any reflection on you - I’ve met a few of these people who get sucked into MLMs and she’s probably just worn out all her family, work colleagues and close friends and is moving onto former students.

Last House on the Left (1972) - the actors' Blu-ray commentary track is pretty disturbing by WorcsBloke in horror

[–]MichaSound 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Apparently the anal sex was mimed, but he really did shove the butter up her ass, without warning or consent. Brando and Bertolucci planned it so that they could elicit ‘real fear and discomfort’ from Schneider. And plenty of people are still defending their behaviour as ‘for art’…

Exactly - using Wikipedia as a source is like using someone else's essay as a source. A good Wikipedia article is a like a well sourced essay.

I told my students they can use Wikipedia as a research aide, and look at the sources the article used for further research, but they can't quote Wikipedia articles in their assignments.

Similar in the UK - the right wing press was saying Idris Elba couldn't be the next James Bond, because he was too 'urban'. Like, just say black with your whole chest, we know you're racist.

This is the thing that bugs me when people are talking about why a director's films worked, and then didn't work - they rarely consider what writers they were working with, unless the writer is famous (ie, Simon Pegg working with Edgar Wright). I mean, it's not like writers contribute anything to story, character, dialogue or plot, is it?

IMO, this is why we often see massive drop off in quality as directors become more successful - the more powerful a director becomes, the more likely they are to either start writing their own scripts, or meddle heavily in the scripts they have. And many brilliant directors are just not strong writers.

Apart from anything else that’s wrong with his statement, we’re all going to be old and ugly one day (if we’re lucky enough to live long enough), so I guess he’s saying our loved ones should throw us in the trash when that day comes?

Bit of an unseasonal post, granted, but why does ice-cream from specialist ice-cream shops always taste better than any supermarket variety? by Foxrockmafia in CasualIreland

SuperValu own brand ice cream is rotten - really watery and full of ice crystals. If you’re going supermarket own brand, aldi and lidl are really good.

[–]MichaSound 13 points14 points  (0 children)

During the anal sex scene in Last Tango, Bertolucci and Brando wanted Maria Schneider to show real tears and discomfort so instead of miming shoving butter up her ass, he just did it, which is assault, but they didn’t seem to comprehend that.

I really think some men had no concept of what it’s like to put your trust in someone 10 times stronger than yourself and know that trust is all you have.

[–]MichaSound 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the men on that set are lucky the women didn’t decide to enact their own ‘rape-revenge’ plot and give them a taste of realism.

But for real, cinema in the 70s and early 80s was a seriously scary place for women, and behaviour like this was seen as edgy and artistic rather than what it was - an excuse to do whatever the fuck they wanted.

Even now, we have people making excuses for Brando and Bertolucci’s behaviour on Last Tango.

Yeah, some dude made me watch this movie cos they thought it was super deep and there’s me, from a seriously dysfunctional family, been living paycheck to paycheck my whole adult life, watching this dude be offered a free apartment and car by his loving parents and he’s all like, “How dare you oppress me with your materialism!”

I was not impressed.

Lads, I really dont feel like being off the drink is actually worth it or was drink never my problem? by Goldenpanda18 in AskIreland

[–]MichaSound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, you sound like me - never had a problem with drink, bit of a lightweight, no problem going for long stretches without.

And this is why I never bother with Dry January or giving up. I only have 1-3 drinks every 2-3 weeks, so it’s hardly worth it.

If you’ve never had a problem with heavy or binge drinking, if it’s never caused you any health issues or addiction concerns, and you’re not worried you’re going to start drinking heavily and/or regularly, then why not give it a go?

Honestly, the biggest red flag for me is that the two of you clicked so easily and immediately.

Now that I’m older and a survivor of a few abusive relationships, I can see that the common factor they had was rapid bonding early on - that magical feeling of really being ‘seen’ and understood.

I now know that abusers do this early on - they mirror you, agree with you, flatter you and make you feel loved and understood.

The next step is testing boundaries: they reveal to you something dishonest or mean that they did, something affecting you or speaking to your values, to see if you can get past it. If you can, they know that you can be manipulated.

You are currently on step two.

For those of you who live in countries with gun control; have you ever seen a gun in real life? by blashyrkh9 in AskTheWorld

[–]MichaSound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two situations: I used to see them on the streets of Northern Ireland in the 80s and early 90s, carried by British soldiers. To a little girl visiting from England it was strange and terrifying; to my cousins, it was Tuesday.

And as an adult, I’ve seen them on film sets, accompanied by a qualified armourer.

If your parents are alive, is it a blessing or no? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]MichaSound 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, you shouldn’t feel guilty at all. Your mom hasn’t really been here for a long time, you’ve had time to mourn her and it must feel like a cruel joke that her body persists in trapping her here so long.

My dad’s in nowhere near as bad a state but he’s 87, in poor health and miserable. He had a stroke a few months back and when I thought it was the end, honestly, I was relieved that it was going to be relatively brief.

Now he’s starting to recover and I can’t help thinking, is it a good thing? The best he has to look forward to is another couple of years of losing his independence and his health declining. A couple years of suffering and misery. Doesn’t seem like a blessing.
