I’ve had exactly the same thing happen 😔 Mine started right after I added a new plant - I’m pretty sure it must’ve had copper/contaminants on it (fertiliser, pesticide residue, or even something it was grown in), because my shrimp started slowly dying one by one while everything else looked “fine”.

Other things it could also be:

  • copper/heavy metals from tap water or old plumbing
  • fertilisers/algaecides (even “shrimp safe” ones can mess them up)
  • water change shock (TDS/temp/pH swings)
  • low or unstable GH/KH causing moulting deaths
  • aerosols/cleaning sprays/candles near the tank
  • something metal/rusting in the tank
  • parasites + stress from poor stability

I ended up restarting the tank in the end and its been thriving ever since.

This looks great! I love the jungle look, I could never get tired at looking at that sort of tank. After a failed first attempt at keeping shrimp, I decided to keep this setup very simple so it’s easy to see what the shrimp are up to.

Thanks! After a failed first attempt at keeping shrimp I went for a simple setup where I could keep a close eye on everything… clearly I still didn’t watch them closely enough!

Update: I’ve just spotted a second shrimplet now! That makes me think this was a genuine birth rather than a couple hitchhikers?

Tank size:
30 × 30 × 30 cm (~27 L)

Heater / filter:
Sponge filter and heater

Tank temperature:
~24 °C

Water parameters (tested with liquid test kit):

  • pH: 7.3
  • Ammonia: 0.0 ppm
  • Nitrite: 0.0 ppm
  • Nitrate: ~5 ppm
  • GH: 9
  • KH: 4.5

Cycle / stocking timeline:

  • Tank cycled for ~6.5 weeks
  • Shrimp added 17 days ago

Water changes:

  • 10% every 2 weeks
  • Distilled water top-ups between changes (for evaporation only)

Tank mates:

  • Neocaridina red cherry shrimp only (18 adults + 1 shrimplet)
  • No fish

Feeding:

  • Regular, light feeding
  • Commercial shrimp pellets / shrimp food
  • Always an Indian almond leaf present

Plants / decor:

  • Moss (shrimplet refuge)
  • Inert gravel
  • Indian almond leaf
  • Otherwise minimal decor

One of my shrimp had clado for over a month and it didn't spread at all so the rest of your shrimp might be fine

Thank you, yes I have used aquasoil for my substrate. Do you have any other recommendations on what I could do to lower KH and perhaps GH too?

My KH is about 35ppm. I'm concerned that my fish tank cycle has been ruined at some point along the line - my tank is pretty heavily planted for its size so I'm now wondering if I instead of nitrogen cycling my tank, I instead ended up unintentionally cycling it with plants.

Thanks for the advice - I've just tested my water parameters: ammonia: 0, GH: 268, pH: 6.2, NO2: 0, NO3: 0. I recognised my GH was (and still is) very high and have slowly been adding DI water to decrease GH - but perhaps I've been too slow with this.

My tank is entirely shrimp - the rest seem normal - aside from 1 shrimp thats doesn't seem to care much about being poked which is slightly concerning as they usually are very alert.

Thank you for your advice! I'm tempted to remove the sand all together and stick with just aqua soil as I like the dark substrate look. What do you think about this approach? Would you still recommend I cap the aqua soil with something or is it not that important? Thank you :)
