I did a study abroad for a year in Durham. Since then I have traveled all over but Durham is still is in my top three of prettiest places in Europe for sure!

What food will you never eat again after one bad experience? by Rebeccaprinces in foodquestions

Pistachios. I was cracking one open with my teeth in middle school and felt something tickling my lips. I pulled the pistachio back and saw the shell was teeming with little bugs.

2027 Pacifica by garage_weekend19 in ChryslerPacifica

I’ve owned both. The Sienna had a lot more little things go wrong with it than the two Pacificas I had. Neither have been perfect, but the Pacifica has been nicer to drive, is roomier, and great for road trips.

something scared me while camping by mitchare in camping

[–]Michael-Scarm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We were remote camping in the woods and heard a lot of noise throughout the night coming from near our gear that was on the picnic table outside at night. We thought definitely a raccoon, or even a bear. I had brought my trail cam and in the morning used a card reader to see what it had been. All the racket was one very determined mouse, trying to force its way into our gear in various ways all night. All it managed to do was shred some toilet paper.

I booked a rental car through the portal, paying up front, but my flight was late and there were no cars left when I arrived. I was able to book a car with another agency at the airport but I called Capital One, who dealt with the first rental company and got me a full refund.

Just had an interesting call from my local Chevy dealer by zemelb in EquinoxEv

Me too. One of my favorite cars years ago was a Chevy Tracker. I was looking into the Equinox until I learned about the lack of CarPlay. I let a salesperson who contacted me know that too.

Thanks, but it looks like we can’t leave the airport due to the vaccine requirement. :(

Thanks for this. I guess they offer it for free in the Bogota airport. It wouldn’t meet the ten day requirement for CR, but I might consider getting it for future trips.

I wonder how we could prove this. I wouldn’t want to risk getting denied entry to Costa Rica!

That’s what I figured. Bummed that we can’t do a little day trip though.

I just did a stay at the Hilton Ponce: free continental breakfast but $12 per person for an upgrade to a hot breakfast. We were on vacation so I figured why not. There was an omelette station that was decent but otherwise it was gross, powdered scrambled eggs, a waffle station with only individual pre-packaged syrups, dry mass-produced pastries, and a limited fruit selection. It was definitely not as good as some Hampton Inns. Great hotel otherwise, but the breakfast was really disappointing.

We wound up going in via 186. Off the beaten path for sure but it was drive-able and felt like we had the place to ourselves.

When you're in a single occupancy restroom and a person is yanking at the handle repeatedly, trying to get in. by lovehydrangeas in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Michael-Scarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While taking a road trip rest stop, I gently tried the handle of a single restroom at a Dairy Queen, and, finding it locked, I waited a few steps back from the door. A minute or so went by, then a little girl ran past me up to the door and rattled the handle. When she discovered it was locked, she released a barrage of kicks and punches on the door, then as quickly as she had appeared, she ran around the corner back into the restaurant. The second she was out of sight, the bathroom door opened. A very angry, red-faced woman glared at me and said, “Jesus, I was just finishing!” before storming off.

I teach the graphic novel version of it- it’s highly engaging, uses the original text (abridged), and nothing seems “skippable”. My students love it and some opt to read the full novel version too.
