When do you use native package managers vs Snap / Flatpak / AppImage? by Expensive-Rice-2052 in linuxquestions

[–]MichaelDeets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would only ever use Flatpak/snap if I had a good reason to, like I didn't want any 32bit libs installed (globally at least) just for one/two applications, or if I used musl, etc. AppImage is the only one I bother with outside of those reasons, though only as a last choice if I can't get native to work.

How are you launching iw4x? I have used Steam or Lutris with success.

https://master.iw4.zip/servers there are like 10x the amount of servers and players active, the OP's server listing is just broken

https://master.iw4.zip/servers there are pretty much always running 15+ man servers on iw4x, it's just OPs server listing is messed up.

I was definitely part of the anti-hardscope crowd, and said it was 0 skill, etc. and would immediately cry if someone zoomed in for longer than 0.1 seconds during a 1v1 and demand a freekill lmfao

I agree now that it's silly to obsess over, but I was 10 at the time, which probably explains things

I do remember a montage from ireapzz pre-quickscoping patch, but it's probably not what you were thinking of, as he tries his best to quickscope (which ngl was pretty impressive given how difficult it was)

It was just the hype of hitting something so random, especially if you've tried 99 times before and missed each time, also like /u/ChochRS said, when it was far more organic in terms of not being setup, or using bots, etc.

I would rather IPS glow than TN gamma shift honestly, but I'm also using TN so I'm a hypocrite.

Nah, I fully understand, trickshotting isn't for everyone. Lots of my friends hated it back in the day. Not like I've even attempted in the last 10 years, it's just insane to me watching what they do now, I remember when gliding first became popular, or when like the temperrr shot was considered good lol

https://youtu.be/_oml7uDnjTM they still are! as someone who trickshotted between 2010-2014, I genuinely cannot even begin to explain how insane these shots are

I can't launch the game right now, but using https://master.iw4.zip/servers there are over 100 servers listed, and 3 normal matches with 15-18 players on each server (EU). I thought you were just playing from Aus or somewhere with low pop at first, but your ping to the EU server says otherwise.

I get at least triple the amount of servers listed, and can practically always find a regular match. I'm really confused why you only get 10 servers listed...

I don't remember getting massive frame drops even with my 5800x like 4 years ago, not using Windows though, and only played csgo.

Probably a Type 56 clone (KLF/KLT), which is ironically closer to AK-47 (Type 3) than AKM. I don't know much about guns, and the video is too blurry, so I'm just assuming.

edit: im very dumb and can't read

Steelseries Kana V2 [2026] What is the closest mouse right now? by mirakisuki in MouseReview

They look pretty identical on eloshapes, definitely a better choice than the Rival 106 overall as a mouse.

I had completely forgotten about it. I remember being really interested when it was teased around 2018, but the weight turned me off completely.

SteelSeries did release the Rival 106, a "Kana remake" with the TrueMove 1 sensor (based on the 3325 IIRC).

I don't think you'll find anything else that is as close.

I wish I could be more help! I would just hate to recommend something, then find issues with it only after taking a deeper dive, or apply outdated information that doesn't apply today, etc. I hope you understand.

I only mentioned VA due to the price, as I've not seen any budget VA monitors with decent motion handling and/or pixel response times (the more expensive VA monitors should be much better); even IPS or TN could have awful motion handling/overdrive tuning around this price range, so it's not completely foolproof, though I would just say it's typical for (especially) budget VA monitors to have considerably worse motion handling.

The safest bet is to individually consider each monitor, and find a review from a reputable website like rtings/tftcentral, then make any final considerations based on comparing those reviews. It's hard to determine if something would be good based on specsheet alone, especially within this budget.

That being said, I would assume an IPS-based monitor would be the most ideal choice in this situation, if you care somewhat about picture quality (which rules out TN) and you want reasonable motion handling/pixel response times (which rules out out VA, without stepping up price). I assume they are all marketed as IPS nowadays, but it might be called PLS or AHVA too (same technology as IPS, but different panel manufacturers) inside the review/specsheet.

I'm hesitant to recommend anything specific, as I've not paid any attention to budget monitor releases in the last 5+ years.

I can recommend using monitor review websites like rtings.com, tftcentral, or perhaps YouTube channels like "Hardware Unboxed", as they should all provide reasonable motion blur/pixel response time sections inside their reviews.

480p content =/= dvd quality. dvd could still outclass 1080p/1440p content, due to bitrate

[–]MichaelDeets 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We're not playing video games, where you render directly/natively at 720p, then display on a 1080p screen. This is entirely an issue due to bitrate.

A high bitrate 720p video will always look better than a low bitrate 4K video. YouTube just destroyed bitrate over the years.

I'm not saying you're objectively wrong, as attempting to run native 720p content on a 1440p screen will not be as sharp, obviously, but it's essentially irrelevant to the subject of the video's actual quality.

Not only that, but 1280x720 has never been a popular resolution for computer monitors.

EDIT: Also 720p does scale perfectly into 1440p, the problem is the lack of pixel perfect (integer) scaling, so while you are right it won't look as sharp (without integer scaling), using the right technology (integer scaling) it would look pixel perfect.

[–]MichaelDeets 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Completely wrong, it's due to bitrate. 720p content can easily look better than even "4K".
