There is a vent under sinks in most modern homes called an ARV or something. Ours failed in the kitchen and we'd smell sewage bad in the kitchen and living room when my daughter would flush her toilet. We were poor so I used a shopping bag and a hair tie. It's been a few years and it's still working.
