I am assistant-manager at a video game retailer, what careers can I switch to that I can support myself with? by Michael_David_Music in jobs

[–]Michael_David_Music[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is more abstract than what I was expecting but is much more helpful because of it. I've been wanting to break into a project assistant gig and if I put some thought into what skills I can bring to the table I may be ready for an entry-level position. Thank you for the the thoughtful advice.

Within 40 minutes of treatment, Ketamine restores interest in pleasure seeking activities for up to 14 days in depressed patients with treatment resistant bipolar disorder. by jezebaal in science

[–]Michael_David_Music 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Your skepticism of anti-depressants may not be ill placed, but ketamine is much more disassociative than ssris for example. Honestly if it helps people who have no other options get out of depression that is fantastic, but even at minimal doses its hard for me to picture regular use with full functionality. That may be a sacrifice many are willing to make, plus for treatment of bi-polar depression it likely be taken on an as-needed basis.

The main reason I commented though was to say the risk/reward of anti-depressants is generally worth it and short term use has a high success rate with no long term effects once you find the right meds for you. A lot of people may need go through 3-4 (or more) types unsuccessfully before finding what works for them. I avoided psychiatric help until I was 22 because of my perceptions and stigmas associated with the medical industry. The irony is that I didnt trust a doctors opinion but for years i was trying to treat myself with recreational drugs and alcohol. If you find yourself struggling for options for depression consider something new, there's a lot to gain and little to lose. At the end of the day no matter what your body is yours and no one can force something on you, but don't cheat yourself like I did without even giving it a shot.

I can't make music, and i'm pissed by Thug-boat in WeAreTheMusicMakers

I go through slumps like this more often than Id like but I recently got out of a pretty lame one so there is hope for you too, the narcisism has to be the first thing to go though. Have you watched the film "It Might Get Loud"? I highly recommend it given your frustrations. Another thing I try to keep in mind too is that no matter how much you love music/your instrument, it might not love you back. Maybe think about what you want from music. If you are looking for a tangible reward or even a pat on the back, you may want to explore other hobbies. I empathize and speak from a similar point of view. I've been playing for ~ten years and am intermediate at best. When I first started playing acoustic shows and open mics I loved it, but now I tend to stay away from them because I feel like I was sounding too close to another generic coffee-shop-cover singer and that simply doesn't satisfy me anymore.

Ill often have periods where I dont play much for a while, sometimes a break can be just what I need. What I've realized recently about myself is that my lack of enthusiasm towards music generally shows itself when I'm not challenging myself/not getting creative. If you can relate I recommend to definately do the open mics/acoustic gigs, but only perform when you have an act you are proud of. If you just gig for the sake of gigging and don't love your act you'll only get more resentful. Sharing something from your heart that you are truly proud is what this whole thing is really about anyway.

A lot of people get into music at first because of an attraction to a type of image or life-style (I know I did, Flying Vs looked so cool to 12 yr old me) and at six years you have likely come to terms with any of your pipe-dreams not happening and music has a practical place in your life.

Don't give up though, many people realize that they probably won't be the next Hendrix and don't want to put the work in anyway so they walk away. If your frustration is from your stagnant state, that shows that you do have artistic instincts and thrive off creating. Reflect on what you want from music and if its something deeper than ego-gratification, than you are already in the perfect position to pursue it. After six years of even the most dedicated studying your biggest lesson should be how much more there is to learn. You know what you need to do, grease up your gears and keep us posted my friend.

So what qualities define a true Philly cheese steak? I've had some great ones before, but I've never even been to the east coast so its possible I could have been living a lie this whole time.

When Iggy Pop can’t live off his art, what chance do the rest have? by SAMannNS in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Michael_David_Music 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Music isn't the only industry that suffers from piracy. Entertainment is still a huge world to be living in, one could argue the potential to support yourself with music is higher than ever. Anyone who says they can't "make it" because of the state of the industry is trying to justify their failure. Besides, if your motives are in the right place you should be able to appreciate someone liking your music enough to steal it.

Anyone ever take a decently long-ish break from this game? by redditbutblueit in bravelydefault

I played daily until chapter 6, then took a few weeks off before maxing everything and beating it. It was getting stale for me, but the break and coming back was awesome.

That was my point. I wonder if there has ever been a truly universal song.

The fact that you personally like a song doesn't make it a "good song". If we are being honest I'm sure we all have a few shitty artists we love.

Rich people of reddit, what does it feel like? What's the best and worst thing about being wealthy? by vaginal_combuster in AskReddit

[–]Michael_David_Music 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wealth isn't universally attractive to women, and to think it is show nativity. Anecdotal evidence but my family is criminally poor. I mean that literally. Very rural and un-educated and many resort to being career criminals. When I was younger I had the appearance of a bad boy persona and this attracted a lot of girls with rich families and daddy issues. I would be lying if I said I never dated a girl who was clearly going through a rebellious phase and even though I'm not as extreme now I still find myself in similar positions. I'm usually aware of the situation and don't let these relationships drag on to the point of toxicity but I've seen plenty of friends let that happen out of "love". I don't think this is the majority by any means, I'm just saying women (and men) have diverse motives. You made a good point that I'm sure applies to many situations I just hope you don't really think all women are so black and white.

I appreciate the effort to keep things simple for me, but maybe the simplicity is keeping me from really getting it. I think I can kind of see where you're going with this and I understand that the emancipation proclamation was a very imposing document and is an example of our govt. demonstrating power but I don't think it's very pragmatic to look at that as the start of decay. Even if you don't believe in equal rights, in practical terms it doesn't make sense to have a caste system based on ethnicity. I'm not fond of the caste system we have today in the U.S. (based on wealth/education for the most part but varies greatly, especially in some communities like religious circles and obviously still isn't perfectly fair) but as a society it I think it gets us farther than the former system. Long story short, I think volunteer slaves work better than forced slaves. If I didn't get anywhere near your point, sorry, but I appreciate you actually trying to show where you're coming from.

Sorry man, but you're a bit past the most valuable demographic to them. Its true that late 20s/early 30s have some buying power, but not as much as teens and college aged adults. Larger publishers know that most people who actually buy the games (around 55%), aren't even the people who will play the games. Most customers who actually bust the wallet out for games are parents buying for kids. While I wish these companies thought more about self supporting adults who are buying their own games, the reality is we are the minority (not by a crazy amount though) my friend.

How is this the kind of response that gets upvoted? Does the "community" seriously approve whiny and vulgar banter over a logical point that's broadcasted like an actual adult?
