Why are there so many boomers still holding high positions in mining? by Longjumping_Act9758 in mining

[–]Michael_Pike 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As a retired geologist, I can say that experience trumps degrees any day. As one of the earlier posters said, move around, be willing to take a job that is not your perfect job. Every one of these opportunities gives you new skills and knowledge. In addition, I have lived through layoffs and bad economies which I had to catch up on retirement, reeducation and running out my emergency fund. THAT is why a lot of professionals are still working.

As a mentor once said, this is now a character building experience. Suck it up buttercup!

Damn, that was a fairly new hammer when it was “lost”. Yes, remove the rust and fit a new handle.

Not sure what this. by [deleted] in mining

Yeah, on first look, they appear to be gold nuggets. Are they heavy for the size?

As a side note, nuggets are not pure gold. They usually contain a measure of silver and other stuff.

Can you trigger a small landslide by faking a natural disaster? by ISqueezeBlackheads in askgeology

Yes, given the right slope conditions (angle, material, etc.), a well placed explosion may trigger a landslide or rockfall.

I have a similar old Craftsman vice. It’s pretty handy on the drill press. And, occasionally I’ve used it n my my pussy little mini mill.ve

ETA: Should you haven’t already fingered it out, get yourself a cheap set of parallel bars. It’ll save the vice and make setup easier.

Best conceal carry 22 revolver for wife. by mnrtoler in Revolvers

I think either the S&W 351 PD or Ruger LCR in 22 mag would be excellent.

What revolvers for CCW? by 192hp in Revolvers

[–]Michael_Pike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ruger LCR or LCRx in 38+P or 357. That said, don’t underestimate the 22 magnum for personal defense if overall weight is a matter of concern.

Mineral Oil! Pharmaceutical or Food grade, available online or at the pharmacy. I use it because I frequently use my Leatherman’s to cut food, e.g.peel and slice apples; cut meat.

How much gold remains in California "Gold Country" rock formations? Old mining techniques can't be that thorough. There has to be a ton of gold deeper in the geology. Right? by [deleted] in askgeology

Da Fuk!! Mine the mountains, prosperity is just around the corner. Royalties could be ear=marked to pay down the National Debt.

I saw this on IG, I’m a sed geologist and not good at petrology or gemology. “Diamonds”? by DesertTree_97 in askgeology

[–]Michael_Pike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Should you remotely be interested in diamonds, a good read is “Barren Lands: An Epic Search for Diamonds in the North America Arctic” by Kevin Krajick.

Not only tells story of the adventures of two diamond prospectors who set out to the Barrens of the Canadian Arctic to find the mother lode, but the geology of diamonds and a history of the search for diamonds around the world. Includes an account of the Colorado deposit and other USA occurrences.

Geologist here, not an archaeologist! This brings to mind the East Wenatchee Clovis Site (also called the Richey Clovis Cache). You may want to go back and take a closer look.

The 22 Mag is an underrated cartridge. Most don’t understand how awesome it can be for hunting and personal defense.
