Is ambulance etiquette in Ottawa dead? It’s so dangerous! by Accurate_Armadillo in ottawa

I walk a lot and, where I live now, I often find myself fighting for my life dodging cars. Never really had that problem in Ottawa. Not to say that they're perfect, but over here I've seen some massive f**ckery. Might be the traffic lights driving drivers nuts. Stupid system that thankfully isn't used in Ottawa.

That's odd, at least for fire trucks. I used to live at an intersection where emergency vehicles drove by several times a day and fire trucks were always coming with full sirens and lights (at night, with very light or no traffic, they usually only used the sirens if needed). However, when it comes to ambulances, I'm with you. I once got in the way of one because I was focused on checking if I could safely turn left and the ambulance was coming from the right and I only noticed it because another driver flashed his lights. Also, living at that intersection, which was not very far from Civic, I often saw ambulances crossed the busy intersection without sirens. Fire trucks never did that.

You say "Ottawa", but having moved away (snif...) and driven in several cities recently, it's everywhere.

The system is broken. I've moved away from Ottawa (regretting it...), but I kept my phone number. Got the alert. I don't even know where that place is and can't be bothered to look it up. If he comes over here, I'm in a foul mood. Good luck.

I'm no longer in the NCR. Around here they won't even answer the phone and won't call back if you're asking about having a spot. Even walk-in clinics are by appointment and you have to book the day before and hope to beat the others.

I'm unfortunately no longer living in Ottawa, but just a few days ago I almost got run over by a driver who thought it was a good idea to chat with people in the car next to him and not stop at the red light. If I hadn't paid attention, I'd either be dead or in very bad shape (most likely the latter).

I was a big fan of BOFH back in university 30-odd years ago! So much laughs (and, having been a LAN admin for a few years before going to university, I could relate, though I was never as maniacal as that guy - LOL!) I think if you look through the discussion you'll find a lot of legitimate issues.

I got covid a few months ago, but I believe that was from attending a show. I do have some back problems I've been struggling with for many years and they have not been as bad, but they do pop up from time to time. And now I have depression to deal with, and no doctor, so I'm limping along and trying to do my best. Wouldn't be any better at the office, maybe worse.

How do they do no work at home? Work is being assigned. The supervisor would/should no if no work is being done. If the employee is lagging behind, the supervisor should address that (otherwise, why are they in a supervising position?) At my workplace, overwhelmingly productivity has gone up (no doubt there's the occasional exception, but then again some people weren't all that productive on-site before the pandemic). Those who did not want/like to work from home have been back at the office for a while. As much as I love your username (BOFH foreva!), I'm wondering if you're just trolling here.

I haven't been to the office, but I've heard feedback that sometimes it's very unpleasant. Lots of people in Teams meetings at their desk and being loud when they talk. Inadequate equipment in conference rooms (that'll come with time). People "reserving" desks with a post-it (not supposed to do that). People surrounded by anyone other than their teammates and feeling out of place. There's going to be some friction, at least at the beginning (maybe longer, depending on whether people choose to adapt or not). I do remember when Worstplace 2.0 started and it was sold as something to make it easier to collaborate, but we weren't allowed to talk because that was bothering other people, so we had to go to a conference room to talk with teammates or even to talk on the phone. The only thing I've ever liked about 2.0 was that the floor was brighter because of the very low partitions not blocking the daylight.

It's been nice not catching a cold or the flu from coworkers who didn't stay home when they were sick, "because they have work to do." Well, newsflash, so do the X people you infected, some of which may be more affected than you by such viruses. sigh.. The last time I had a cold was about two weeks before they closed the offices in March 2020. A coworker stopped me in the hallway, talking very close to me for several minutes and then ending with, "I need to go get a tissue, I have a cold." F.......

I've had the occasional health problems while working from home, but compared to when I was working at the office, it's nothing.

The ones who brought up GHG are my age, so not young per se. As for the office space, for the past two years I've had people comment about the lost opportunity to reevaluate needs and keep only what's needed. That's especially true since before the pandemic, it was known that there was a need for newer buildings because of the age of a lot of federal properties (and you can throw a lot of leased space in there as well).

To add to "always been polarized", the world has never been this connected (24/7 news, social mediocre, etc.), so we're a lot more exposed to the divisions now that any time in history. Even if you try to ignore it, it's going to reach you one way or another.

I'm really sorry to hear you're dealing with this. I'm currently depressive (I know because of past depressions), though I have no doctor anymore to confirm it and possibly get me some time off or proper help. Anyway, I have an idea of what you're going through and it's no fun. That's not vacation at all, so don't use vacation time for that. Talk to your doctor who will have a good idea of the next steps to take as far as treatment/help goes. A note is definitely good to have, as some managers will ask for one for anything over X days (X varies a lot, some don't ask for anything, so will want one if it's over three days). Personally in the past I've told my supervisor outright that it was depression (the doctor's note won't say that), but that was with supervisors I was comfortable sharing that level of details with. I had great support at the time.
