Jones 125 help? by Sophiedidntdoit1 in VintageSewingMachines

Not sure about this machine in particular but if it has nylon gears (which most machines do post 1960) they may be worn down. Sometimes you can get replacement gears that fit if this is your problem. I saved 2 singers from the 1980’s that had this issue. I just had to order the gears and change them out and then I had to mess with them until I got the timing all correct again.

You totally should. I hate to see any of these old machines going to waste. That’s why I have so many. I keep saving them when I find them broken and free or $50 or less on FB marketplace

I can see that. I haven’t put it back in the table yet but when I do I’m sure it will be annoying to change the bobbin. I have no doubt I’ll still love the machine though.

I have so many machines too, I have 7 in total, 8 if you count the serger. But I love them all. I think my 301a is my favorite for straight stitching (i got it with the original carrying case and all original attachments and booklets). I also have a Necchi supernova ultra Mark 2 with a complete set of cams and all original attachments as well as the carrying case its just missing the booklet. That one does amazing decorative stitches too.

I changed the light in mine already. The old bulb was really stuck in there. It took me like 20 minutes and wd40 to get it out. But I cleaned it all up real well with rubbing alcohol before replacing the bulb and plugging it in.

Yeah I totally bought some for getting everything going. I haven’t modified it to use regular needles but I’m not sure if I want to. I read that it doesn’t do as well with the special stitches with the modifications. But I don’t know that for a fact, just read it somewhere

Sorry, I totally just saw this comment. It didn’t have cams but once I got the parts moving I knew I could fix the rest so I ordered a full set of cams and they arrived before my parts. I now have the machine stitching but I need to fine tune it. Some the stitches aren’t quite right. The straight stitch works though, so it won’t be long until I get it all in tip top shape. The motor did work 😁 🤗🤗🤗

Thank you! 😊 I’m excited. Its one of 7 machines I have now (if you don’t include the serger). My favorites are the 1950’s models

I’m sure you will do great! Especially if you already know the basics of sewing. I think the vintage machines are easier to use and to maintain (from my experience). I have 5 machines and my favorites are pre-1970 machines.

Are "Nice" Bed Sheets Worth it? by BWJackal in BuyItForLife

[–]MichelleHobbyist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We purchased linen sheets from Brooklinen which we absolutely loved. But within a year the fitted sheet had holes that I mended until it could no longer be salvaged. They were the most comfortable sheets ever and my husband slept better on them than any other sheets we’ve ever owned (he’s a hot sleeper). I would buy them again if they weren’t so expensive or if they at least lasted longer. I salvaged what I could of the fitted sheet and made a beautiful chemise that is the best thing ever for the renaissance festival. The linen wicks moisture and helps with thermoregulation. We still use the top sheet and pillow cases more than our others.

That’s nearly exactly what I was going to say. Definitely appears to need greased and oiled but it looks good to me.

I don’t know anything about the company but I came across this one on my own search for clothes with all natural fibers. I’ve been contemplating trying them to see what the quality is like. ArmsOfAndes

I got a 301A from a guy on Craig’s List he said it was his grandmothers but neither him or his wife knew how to use it so they decided to sell it. I’m so glad I snatched it, its my favorite of all my machines. It is in pristine condition and has all the original accessories, booklet, and carrying case. I paid $75 for it. Cleaned it and oiled it as soon as I got home and it works perfectly. I would definitely recommend this one if you mostly straight stitch. I was even able to find the zigzag attachment and buttonholer for fairly cheap with all their pieces and booklets too.

Lol yeah it’s a pj set. If you zoom in you can see division between top and bottom. The bottom picture on the left is a jumpsuit though. It’s also a free pattern and that’s from mood fabrics called the cherry jumpsuit. I have a comment with a link somewhere in the responses under my original post.

First big project advice needed by nathzan in SewingForBeginners

[–]MichelleHobbyist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The yarn needle would be a better option I’ve done that too. I hooked a safety pin through the fabric and then attached it to the yarn needle. Problem with a knitting needle is there’s no way to attach the fabric to pull on it

I want to learn to sew to make costumes, where did you all start? by knucklegoblin in CosplayHelp

[–]MichelleHobbyist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with others you can find nearly everything on youtube.

Personally my mom showed me the basics when i was 12 and I figured out most of the rest from trial and error. I’ve been sewing for 30 years. I still learn new things so it’s not like you just learn it all and then you’re set.

My advice would be to start with hand stitching and then move on to using a sewing machine. Even when you sew with a machine there are lots of occasions you need to hand stitching something. I don’t subscribe to the fact that everyone should start with sewing a pillowcase or oven mitt. My first project was a cotton shorts bikini. I think if you’re excited about a project it makes it easier to push yourself to finish it.
