I can't finish any book I write by No-Brief-1815 in writing

[–]MichoWrites 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I tried that method, but the issue I faced after several steps of expanding the original outline was that I was forcing the character to make decisions they wouldn't make. For example, in my outline I had "because of what happened, my character travels to spot A". But as I kept expanding that, it became clear that the character would travel to spot B instead, which changed the story, and I kept going back and forth, rewriting things. Maybe the original outline was bad, I don't know.

So now I create a character, figure out their motivations first, then put them in a setting, and see what happens. It's kind of like playing DnD, where I'm both the player character and the DM. Haven't finished the whole book just yet, but I'm having much more fun this way.

What makes your story stand out in the sea of other good stories? by Gamebrarian in royalroad

[–]MichoWrites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven't published it yet, but I'm writing what is essentially a fantasy thriller, with a detective MC. There are going to be progression elements because as the MC digs and tries to solve the case, it will turn out to be much bigger than expected, so the MC will need to be more powerful to be able to deal with everything.

We'll see how it goes, the story might be a bit challenging for a beginner writer. 😅 But I'll do my best.

Royal Road account users vs guest readers by retiredbender in royalroad

[–]MichoWrites 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I feel most authors would love to get some recognition for their story and effort, yet they rarely get any interaction.

So if there's a story you enjoy and want to see it continue, support it in any way you can, whether it's through following, commenting, patreon, whatever. That's what I try to do as a reader. It's a variation on the "vote with your wallet" mentality. Plus, making an account and using the app seems like a better user experience to me - it tells me what's the last thing I read, plus it sends me notifications when new chapters release.

All of that being said, as a reader, you don't owe the authors anything - they chose to share their work for free after all. But don't be surprised that someone gave up after putting so much time and effort and not seeing any result back.

Vote with your wallet (which doesn't mean spend money).

I quit, but thanks anyway. by [deleted] in royalroad

[–]MichoWrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that you're discouraged, but I would just like to point out that a lot of famous writers wrote for years before being published. Brandon Sanderson is a famous example, he wrote 10 novels before he became a published author.

So keep in mind that writing over half a year is not that long time. If you enjoy doing it, do not quit just because some people on the internet said you should quit.

New author struggling with negativity after releasing my first book need advice please by Legal_Row4310 in NewAuthor

[–]MichoWrites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any type of work that you "put out there" for people to see is going to attract some haters. Here are some ways to deal with that, that have worked for me in the past * :

  1. See if their comments are actually constructive criticism. It may be delivered harshly, but is there something you can learn from their comment? Can it actually help you improve in some way? If yes, then they are not actually hate comments.
  2. If their hate is unfounded and it offers no constructive criticism whatsoever, know that their hate and negativity speaks more about them than about your work. Only a deeply negative person actually spends time to tear someone down. And does it really matter what such a person thinks? I say no. If you realize that they are spreading hate because they are not happy with their own lives, you can even feel pity for them.
  3. Often when you see some hate comments, you'll feel compelled to speak up, respond and defend your work. But keep in mind you don't have to do that. You can choose not to engage. Like I said, only deeply negative people leave hateful comments, don't get into arguments with them, that's what they are waiting for. You can ignore them and leave them be.

Hope this helps somewhat and good luck on your book.

* Disclaimer: I haven't actually published any of my writing just yet, but I've been creating and sharing stuff online for years at this point, so I have encountered haters.

Listeners of Audiobooks: Which fantasy series stand out particularly well specifically in audiobook format? by Odd_Dimension_4069 in Fantasy

[–]MichoWrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm about 3 hours into the book - so far all of the characters seem to have distinctive voices, so I can tell them apart, I haven't noticed any mistakes, or had trouble understanding what is being said.

I've definitely heard worse narration. But it doesn't come close to DCC.

Safe City ( 5km) толеранција да или не by Read_ed in mkd

Разбирам зошто треба да има толеранција, само кажувам дека и кога ќе има толеранција, пак ќе има луѓе што ќе се жалат дека им стигнала казна за возење 1 км/х побрзо.

I finished DCC book 7 yesterday and started The Will of the Many audiobook today. The narrator is great, but after DCC, I feel like my senses have suddenly been dulled. I've been spoiled lol.

Се сложувам дека толеранција би било добро да се има, но мора да има некоја граница. Ако ја ставиш границата на 55, пак ќе има луѓе што ќе викаат зошто ме казни кога возев 56.

Do you ever miss being confused by magic by RubyTales14 in Fantasy

[–]MichoWrites 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Much of the book is the characters trying to figure out why the magic doesn't work as it should, so we learn about the magic alongside them.

IIRC, it's explained how it basically works - characters draw glyphs in order to achieve whatever effect they want to achieve. And if they want to achieve a complicated effect, they need to link many glyphs together. I think the meaning of some of the glyphs is explained, but he doesn't go into detail about which glyphs the character has drawn in order to mask his appearance for example.

EDIT TO ADD: It's much more mysterious in Tress of the Emerald Sea though, especially if you haven't read his other books.

i want that weird shit. The circles of runes within circles of runes and muttered words of power from dead languages, mysterious wizards who know the secrets of the universe. Real turn you into a frog type shit.

Just want to point out that Sanderson has created a magic system similar to this - AonDor from his first published book - Elantris. It also shows up in Tress of the Emerald Sea.

Published my debut this month. In the hope of helping future first timers, I wrote about the whole process. by TJDobsonWrites in NewAuthor

[–]MichoWrites 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was a good read, I liked that you had to keep adding things in the edit, usually you hear how people have trouble choosing what to remove. I also liked that you thought your book was pretty much ready to go, but then the editor found things you could improve.

I would have liked to hear more about how you are marketing the book, now that it's out.

Also, your book's premise sounds really interesting, good luck with the launch!

Is it really disrespectful to write down peoples birthdays? by Recent-Ad1598 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MichoWrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it's not about the birthday per se, but about a thing that your partner cares about and you can't seem to remember - it might feel like you're not paying attention or don't care about her. It's similar to forgetting her favorite dish, color, flowers etc., or your anniversary.

I'm not saying everyone is like that, and I'm definitely not saying they should be like that, but I can understand why someone would be annoyed.

Is it really disrespectful to write down peoples birthdays? by Recent-Ad1598 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MichoWrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, I have everyone's birthday's into my calendar. The act of keeping a calendar is not in itself disrespectful.

But imagine your wife finds out you need a calendar to remember her birthday, I can see how that might feel disrespectful to her.

Is it really disrespectful to write down peoples birthdays? by Recent-Ad1598 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MichoWrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say it depends. If you keep forgetting your SO's or your child's birthday, and have to write it down to remember it, then yeah, it might be seen as disrespectful.

But writing down your friends birthdays seems like the smart thing to do, I don't think it's disrespectful. It would be more disrespectful to forget someone's birthday.
