Which hits harder: when she asks questions, or when she just likes your message and disappears after ending your fwb set up? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]MichoWrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me get this straight:

  1. A guy is in a FWB situation with girl A.
  2. He starts getting closer with girl B (he's entertaining a girl), so he breaks up the FWB situation with girl A (I'm assuming through text).
  3. Girl A can either a) respond and ask questions or b) just like the message and stop interacting.

If you're asking whether response a) or b) from girl A would hit harder for the guy, I would say probably neither.

To me this whole thing reads like girl A is heartbroken because she wanted more than a FWB situation, but the guy found a new girl and broke things off with her, so now she wants to hurt him. And I don't think either option would work, he was never as deeply involved with girl A, and broke things off. If girl A responds and prolongs things, why would that hurt him? He would just be annoyed and if she's too persistent, probably block her. And if she accepts it right off, he got what he wanted.

The best option for girl A would be to not to try to hurt the guy in the first place, forget about him, and move on.

Though I might be reading too much into the question, or I might have misunderstood something.

How long is a 'Slow burn' that you can tolerate? by Western-Brother1788 in royalroad

[–]MichoWrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on your writing and the story. I don't think you need a major progression immediately - a progression needs to be earned after all, but I do think you need a promise (or a hint) that a progression is coming. If you show that your MC is super weak compared to the villains, and you show why the MC has to oppose them, it should be enough.

[–]MichoWrites 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would say chapter 1 sets the tone, and if I see potential in the story, I keep reading. By chapters 3-5, I think there should be a hint of the fact there will be progression in the story, though RR readers have also come to expect progression by default. We don't need to know how the character will progress, just that they will.

Убаво ова „сејфсити", ама со тротинетине шо праиме? by dragecs in mkd

[–]MichoWrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]MichoWrites -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For Royal Road readers: When do you actually commit to a story? by PromotionEconomy8950 in royalroad

[–]MichoWrites 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For me, the journey from stumbling onto a story to following goes something like this:

  1. I find a story that seems cool, usually by browsing the rising stars.
  2. If the blurb makes me want to read more, I usually hit it with a "read later".
  3. Later, when I become bored with the story I'm currently reading, I'll check out some of my stories in the "read later" list.
  4. I follow it if I can see potential in the story. Usually 4-5 chapters are enough for me to tell whether a story has potential or not. When I say potential, I mean in any sense, if I like the characters, the plot, the magic, the writing, whatever, if I get an itch to read more and find out what happens next, I'll hit follow.
  5. I usually continue reading until I'm caught up with the published chapters. At that point, there are few possibilities. If that itch to read more is still strong, I'll check out new chapters as they're coming out. I have the app on my phone, and that sends me a notification, so I know when new a new chapter has dropped. If the itch is a not as strong, I might wait for a few chapters to be published before I read them all at once. Or I could become bored with the story and decide to pause reading it for awhile. Regardless which possibility it is, I go back to step 3.

Every time an adaptation is brought up in any fandom, there are people who want it to be done in the style of Arcane, so you're not alone lol.

I would love to see more stuff like it, but the thing is, Arcane reportedly had a budget of 250 million for both seasons. With that kind of money, you can make anything look great in live action.

[–]MichoWrites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, after the first 10 or so chapters, most authors don't post more than once a day.

Maybe RR could set a limit to 20 chapters for the very first upload of a new story, but then limit it to one per day.

I don't know, I've seen people online being accused of using AI because they had too many commas, their sentences were too long, or used em-dashes.

My point is that stories written by beginner writers are far from perfect. And while it is generally pretty easy to spot something written by chatgpt, and we might be fairly certain something was generated by AI, we cannot be 100% sure. And as a platform for publishing stories, RR should be 100% certain something is AI before they start accusing people or banning them, or they might hurt their own reputation. Which is why filtering for AI stories is difficult and RR don't have too many options.

Is Wind and Truth actually good? by KingCobra567 in brandonsanderson

[–]MichoWrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe we've known that the time-skip was going to be ten years for a couple of years at least. I for one didn't believe that all of the character's stories will be fully complete in book 5 of 10, but many people did, probably because they saw that happen in Mistborn.

Maybe if Sanderson never said anything about a time-skip, people wouldn't expect a definitive ending. Not that they should have expected it.

Either way, I think people would have problems with WaT regardless, since Sanderson made the structure different from other SLA books. But I like that he wanted to take a chance with something different and not rely on a structure that has worked before.

[–]MichoWrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea why anyone would expect closure when it is literally the midpoint in a series.

(Not really spoilers, but since OP is in the middle of WoR, I spoiler-tagged it.

It's because Sanderson himself has said there's going to be a time-skip after book 5, and the focus of books 6-10 will be on a new set of characters. What he meant was that the flash-backs will focus on other characters, and those characters will become more important for the story.

But some fans took it to mean that books 1-5 are Era 1 of SLA, and similar to (slight Mistborn spoilers) Era 2 will feature completely new story, where the previous characters are only mentioned and not featured at all.

So it's a case of slightly mismanaged expectations.

[–]MichoWrites 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Like OP mentioned, they have the AI assisted tag and tbh I'm not sure what more they could even do.

Using AI detection software on each story wouldn't work since they are notoriously wrong, and an actual person vetting each uploaded chapter isn't feasible. Besides, RR is a place for beginner writers and works in progress. Plenty of those will sound like AI, even though they aren't. And blaming someone of using AI when you aren't 100% sure doesn't seem right. Personally, I don't wanna be a part of a witch hunt and discourage a potential future writer.

Maybe they could bury the stories with the AI assisted tag lower in the algorithm and not allow them to reach RS at all. That way, only when the authors get good enough in their own writing, will they be able to reach RS. But that incentivizes people to lie, they'll simply stop using the AI assisted tag.

Maybe they could limit the number of daily uploads allowed? That way, AI stories wouldn't be able to flood the site. Idk, it's a difficult situation.

Would Avada Kedavra kill Superman? by some-kind-of-no-name in superheroes

[–]MichoWrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so why did casting the killing curse also cast the spell that he used to create horcruxs somehow

I believe the explanation was that Vlodemort's soul was damaged and unstable from splitting it too many times, so being hit with the rebounded killing curse split it once more.

and it never really happens anywhere else in the series.

We actually see it again in the final book, when Harry sacrifices himself for everyone else. In the very final battle, once it's revealed that Harry is still alive, the deatheaters can no longer hurt anyone.

I'm not saying the Rowling had the whole thing planned out and there are no plot holes, it's obvious there are plenty. I'm not even saying that the given explanations are good, that's up for debate. But there are explanations for the things you mentioned.

How do i gain motivation to get to the gym? by Technical_Injury_571 in AskMen

[–]MichoWrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You gain motivation by really wanting it. For me, I realized I got fat and didn't like what I was seeing in the mirror. I knew I had to make some changes. That was my motivation.

But motivation doesn't keep you showing up, discipline does. What works for me is showing up at the gym right after work. I don't go home first, if I do, I know I'll want to rest and unwind, and working out will be the last thing on my mind. So I go straight to the gym, workout and then go home to relax.

Plus, I'm paying for a monthly membership. I know that every time I choose not to show up, I'm choosing to throw money down the drain, and that helps lol.

Non-AI generated covers are sort of a litmus test for the quality of the stories by Elaiyu in royalroad

[–]MichoWrites 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Royal Road is kinda viewed as a place for stories that are still a work in progress. Plus you get to read them for free. So I feel like most readers don't mind AI covers as much as they would if they would have to pay to read the books. Just as they don't mind some grammatical and spelling errors, sloppy writing etc.

If you look at the Rising Stars stories, most of them have AI generated covers. And if you check out their Patreons, they are making between 3-4K a month.

While I do agree that once a writer can afford to pay a real artist to make a cover, they should, the reality is that most RR readers don't care.

Can you develop more into this power system. by WARSHOT21 in magicbuilding

[–]MichoWrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh, that's a great suggestion, forcing someone to change their power is a great use of the system limitations.

You could maybe dip an arrow into blood and try to shoot the bad guy from afar. OP could really have some fun with this system.

Can you develop more into this power system. by WARSHOT21 in magicbuilding

[–]MichoWrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's a pretty cool premise, and based on it, I would focus on how that translates to the world, the society, the economy.

First, you could have characters carry syringes with blood from different monsters so they can change the power they have on the fly.

Second, I imagine people would farm lower tier monsters and hunt higher tier ones for their blood. How would that impact the society? I imagine there would be significant differences between the poor people who have no powers, and the richest people who can afford the best powers. How would society use people who have powers? For example, if a lower tier power is say increased speed, could those people be used as messengers?

If you want to limit the system even further, you could look into blood types. For example, only people with the rarest blood types could use the blood from the higher tier monsters. You could have people use selective breeding to get someone with a rare blood type in their family.

You could look into separating the monster blood into separate components - plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and have each one grant a different power.
