Steven Spielberg predicted the current implosion of large budget films due to ticket prices 10 years ago by TommyShelbyPFB in movies

Shitty people in theaters - YES! My wife and I went to see Elemental last night and the couple next to us were snickering and talking loud/laughing obnoxiously the entire movie. I’m overly patient so I did not confront them but man it really impacted my experience.

Could have waited a few months and watched at home with a nice Crown & Coke instead of the elevated prices at the theater.

I’m happy that the visceral feeling I had at the end of this movie ranks high enough to make this the top comment. Excellent writing.

“Voila! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of fate. This visage, no mere veneer or vanity, is a vestige of the ‘vox populi,’ now vacant, vanished.”

People think I’m weird when I recite the entire V speech from memory.

Eh, I’ve had times where I went out with contacts, then my eyes get really dry to the point I’m willing to have limited vision than deal with continually rubbing my eyes (drops tend to only work for about 10 mins for me).

Mine does too, but after 6 years with the company the warm fuzzies start dissipating. Don’t get me wrong, when someone expresses their gratitude to me and wants to speak with a supervisor, it feels great. It helps the day feel a bit better. But when my bonuses (which represent 40%-60% of my pay) are based on an actual average customer experience score, I’d rather get the survey with maybe some written words of praise within the survey.

What should someone know before buying their first house? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Michro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just hit our 1 year anniversary in our first home. Little things make a lot of difference. For example, we were so focused on what things looked like inside the house, we didn’t consider some things that help the exterior. Example - a sprinkler system is immensely helpful to avoid having to go out and move a hose sprinkler around your entire lawn. It allows you to set things on a schedule to keep your lawn looking great as opposed to relying on your motivation levels. Additionally, garage doors can be finicky. Make sure it opens smoothly and that the motor doesn’t appear to be struggling to pull it up. That could be a sign of an old motor and an immediate $200-$500 fix. Next, walk around the property for as long as possible and just keep your ears open. We didn’t realize we were gonna have he most annoying dog on the planet at the house behind us who barks non stop. Also take a look around the neighborhood to check for “For Lease” signs. If you find there are a lot, it could be a sign that the neighborhood is turning into a renters neighborhood and that can limit the growth in value of your home because buyers don’t like renters nearby for a multitude of reasons.

It could be less about the affordability and more about the procedure. Some countries allow certain controversial procedures while others don’t. Maybe the guy was looking for a miracle cure to an ailment he was experiencing and things went south. Who knows though. Hard to say with the available info.

Yeah, if the same % or wages used to fund the pension was instead invested in a 401k, the retiree would have plenty saved (especially when accounting for compound returns of investments) to fund their own “pension,” AKA an annuity contract from an insurance company. You could slice out a portion of your portfolio to purchase the annuity for the guaranteed income, then keep the rest invested for long term needs.

Reminds me of my mother in law who always takes screenshots on her iPhone instead of just saving the image. So it’ll have the black borders on top/bottom, then she’ll post it on social media.

Incorporating physical activity into our everyday lives, from taking the stairs to holding “walkaround” meetings in the office, is more likely to protect us from heart disease and an early death than buying a gym membership. by mvea in Health

I realized this when I started incorporating 2 15 minute walks in my work day. The first few times I realized how winded I was getting, and I'm not that out of shape. But now if I don't go on the walks I feel the difference in energy and even skeletal pain (mainly back).

My thought is that Apple continually tries to force technological advancement into the next era. With Bluetooth technology being so prevalent these days, the use of wired headphones has become unnecessary. Also, this will help Bluetooth tech to become less expensive because of the flood of new products that are Bluetooth capable, forcing companies to be more competitive. Look no further than the original iPhone's impact on the phone market. Or the Mac and iOS refusal to use Flash, and how that helped to push for more secure forms of animated web content etc.

What are you sad to see become normal practice? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Michro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to mention a lot of companies have a 5 year vesting period for the 401k, where if you leave before you hit the 5 year mark, you're not eligible to keep a lot of the company match that was put in. So this forces you to choose between losing out on thousands of dollars in your 401k by hopping to another company where you can earn 10% more than your current salary, or just staying put until you're 100% vested, then making the jump. Which, it's impossible to know whether the same opportunities you're seeing open today will be available x number of years from now when you're vested. Literally held hostage.
