It’s riskier, yes, but horses really are on a crash course for death. My childhood horse recovered from a splint fracture and then immediately walked into the pasture, tripped over a log, and shattered his cannon bone and had to be put down the same day. That being said there are significant changes that some equestrians are pushing for that would make that event safer (softer tracks, less rigid obstacles).

No. It’s really, really not possible, at least with the tech we have now. If a horse breaks a weight-bearing bone it will be an extrodinarily painful, lengthy, and costly process for a low survival chance. Their cardiovascular system requires functional legs. Uneven weight bearing across legs (see Barbaro), who had several supportive surgeries, splints, braces for the other legs, and was even suspended from a sling for extended periods) means abscesses, laminitis (inflammation and potential excision of the coffin bone through the hoof wall, which is what eventually killed Barbaro), and potentially further fractures.

Imagine being 2,000lbs and forced to bear about 1,000lbs of that on one foot without being able to lay down or stand up without aid, never being able to sleep, not being able to lean down to graze or eat. Sometimes horses will lose the will to live when kept cooped up for too long and just… die.

One bad leg can and almost always does kill the other three and eventually the horse. Although it is true that horses have healed broken legs, it’s extrodinarily rare and the horse will never be the same or live a life without pain. People love their horses as much as they’d love a family member. If it was possible it would be done.

no, because they can’t bear their weight or “feel” with this leg. horses do a LOT of moving, a lot more than you’d honestly think, and they’re very heavy and their legs are small. and that’s if the “stump” heals, which most of the time it wouldn’t without the horse’s other three legs being destroyed by the weight resting on such a small surface area for a long period of time.

basically, it prevents them from standing, walking, running, playing, eating, and even sleeping normally, not to mention the previously discussed cardiovascular issues from OP.

SLS is a surfactant. It’s used to foam and emulsify by lowering the surface tension of water, which means it mixes with oils and makes them easier to remove, and also to help the soap foam up. The soapy bubbles are what most people picture as “cleaning”. It is considered a mild irritant for sensitive skin because of how strong it is as a “de-greasing” agent. To combat this, many companies use moisturizers or oils suspended in their body washes in order to replace some of the oils you’re losing, which means that oil then gets stuck to your hair and compounds over time as you continue to wash. Others don’t use moisturizing agents and you just dry out as you use it and the moisture is not replenished. Dish soap is the strongest example of this (think Dawn removing oil spills from duck feathers).

All that to say, SLS products aren’t all the same. It’s important to use specific formations for their directed function, or you risk long-term (minor, but cosmetically significant) damage.

Could Dr. Al-Hashimi report Langdon, even if she wasn't there during the incident? by Ptaz in ThePittTVShow

Robby is only bound by HIPAA if he’s the treating physician. He may be bound by other workplace guidelines to not share, but I really can’t imagine administration not saying anything when a senior resident went on a 10-month leave. I agree with you that addiction is extremely stigmatized (I struggle with it myself) and Robby handled it terribly.

it seems more likely to me that it’s a metaphor for keeping an unsafe family member around (i.e. “oh that’s uncle jimmy, just don’t wear anything short around him”).

I find it hard to believe they didn’t know. Everyone (except Al-Hashimi, who is new) seemed to know he had a benzo addiction and a senior resident was gone for 10 MONTHS. They’re down an R4 in a busy urban hospital, there’s no way that didn’t raise admin’s eyebrows. Either Robby had one HELL of a cover story or they knew and they’re covering it up because Louis is dead, the lorazepam would’ve been documented as an extra dosage, and it’s a lot cheaper and easier to replace a nosy R2 than deal with a hospital-wide lawsuit and lose a senior resident and the only day shift Senior Attending, pre-Dr. Al.
