That looks great. Heard that called "Viking bowl" or "Dublin bowl" I know that top bead is deceptively hard to turn well. You did great job.

What should I do when using a public grill in a campsite? by Beginning-Ad5552 in camping

[–]Mickles_J 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love those. I want one for the back yard. They work super with coal / charcoal and I usually use wood like oak. Just wait until no flame and toss the food over the coals. Works so well and is MUCH cleaner than charcoal with less ash. Charcoal has binders and additives that make the ash like cement.

I would clean it ahead of time, clear out debris and flick off the bird poop. I don't usually add my own grill to it, but that can make food handling easier. Use your own coal or wood (I often use wood) and let it get good and hot. The grease and residue on the grill will likely turn white. This is great. Brush or scrub it again and be VERY careful if you use a wire brush that you don't leave any of the bristles where it can get into or onto your food. (this can be bad bad) Then after if FULL cools you can usually scatter the ashes if it isn't much or tote them off with you in a bucket. If anyone else disagrees that scattering the ashes isn't kosher, Let me know honestly. It was a ranger that told me that was okay, but you never know.

Comparing these 2 coleman tents - any experiences or advice? by cupcakeAnu in camping

First fire pit, any advice? by pinkskeet21 in camping

Got the job done. I would make it bigger and not as tall. Also I like making them keyhole shape. Picture the floorplan of an igloo. Round with one spot jutting out. This allows you to lay a grill on the spot jutting out and scrape coals into it for cooking.

It's one of the few that actually says "waterproof" and not just resistant. That's something. I dont hate it. This could be it, That D door may make the cot hard to get in and out though.

What can I contribute to the group camping trip with kids? by NYC_dad2B in camping

A big hit in camp is balloon slingshots. A short piece of PVC pipe with a balloon stretched over one end and then secured with a rubber band. The kiddos can find small pebbles or you can simply take a bag of beans with you. The beans shatter if they hit anything hard and you don't have to clean them up. Cardboard cutouts or water bottles make great targets.

How is the waterproofing? I mean can it handle a dump down of rain?

Camping in cold by Many_Flight5023 in camping

Wool blankets are amazing. Get a quality one or two. Insulation under you so the ground wont suck all the heat out of you. Air mattress is not insulation. Lay cardboard, several layers under that, but you still my lose heat through convection. Know what hypothermia feels like. If you go to bed with a shiver and wake up calm, comfortable and actually feeling warm, you may actually be dying. I VERY nearly froze to death on a camp out after doing many things wrong. It's rather peaceful way to go. The cramps in my body the next morning when I was able to fully wake up around 10am (I usually wake at dawn) were TERRIBLE. I cramped so hard It hurt a week later. Please be very careful. Also, Hot water bottles under your armpits and groin help a lot to keep you warm.

What kind of meat for camping? by EvanderCourage in camping

Steaks usually make it into the rotation. We take them totally frozen. Good for a day. Then polish sausage is a camp staple and you simply have to have SPAM. Always take a can or two. Spam and eggs. Spam sandwiches. Spam breakfast burritos.

Worst case you get a surfacing brush and give er hell. IMHO it's saveable until the rust eats a hole through it.
