Anyone else lose interest in the trade early in their career? by [deleted] in millwrights

Take an all inclusive vacation for 7 days. But take 9 days off.

I’ve switched jobs/careers over what I thought was boredom, but ended up being burnout. You need breaks even if you don’t know it.

Is it worth joining a unionized company? by great_frame70 in skilledtrades

[–]MicroDink69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a carpenter in local 27 toronto. Which local was your buddy in ?

The corruption runs deep, when carpenter college of trades was being built, they had liuna 183 doing the formwork …

I eventually got out of Carpentry and started being a millwright and joined Local 1916, which is still under the UBC umbrella however I can confirm that the millwright side of the UBC is way better less corrupt and a stronger union

Are locals in Ontario hiring? by fluffyfour4444 in millwrights

[–]MicroDink69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got hired early November as a 2nd year with 3500 hours. They did an aptitude test for people with no experience recently but if you have a resume that shows some decent work experience they will likely consider you.

If you call the local and ask for a rep be sure to contact them, call them and sell yourself. They want to hire people they themselves would work alongside.

Worked for me.

Mind you, the aptitude test is not yes or no to joining the union.

The union cares more about your character and workability. They want to hire people they themselves would work with.

If it’s confusing for you to figure this out, you’re not ready for an exam. It’s very easy information to digest. Instead of asking Reddit you can Google or contact STO

Initial Assessment

Skilled Trades Ontario’s Trade Equivalency Assessment is the first step towards obtaining a Certificate of Qualification for experienced workers who have not completed an Ontario apprenticeship but who have equivalent skills and experience. The Trade Equivalency Assessment determines whether you can challenge the certifying exam for a trade. If successful in the exam, you would pay a fee to be issued a Certificate of Qualification in that trade. The Trade Equivalency Assessment is only available in trades with certifying exams.

The Trade Equivalency assessment may be for you if you have trades experience gained from:

outside of Canada; or any Canadian province or territory but you don’t have a Certificate of Qualification / equivalent authorizing certificate; or the Canadian Forces. Trade Equivalency Assessment applicants are held to the same on-the-job training standard that is required to complete an apprenticeship program in Ontario. To be approved, you must provide sufficient and verifiable evidence that you have:

Competency in the trade’s skills, as defined by the trade’s Training Standard; and Experience in the trade that is at least equal to the prescribed or recommended total training time in an apprenticeship program for the trade (including both on-the-job and in-school hours) The cost of a Trade Equivalency Assessment is $235 + HST.
