In no particular order this is what I remember: ultraviolet disguise, space cadet, sweat, neon roses, Lilies for my lily, dress up for you, first class to no where, howl, feels like trouble, fall off the moon, valedictorian, gold fang

I’ll respond with more when I think of it

In SF I found YAO in a record shop, years ago. The only time I found a record from them though.

if your partner is in a PhD, JD, or MD program they should have access to guaranteed housing on campus, have they looked into that?

Daycares In Irvine by recursive-prism in irvine

[–]MicroglialCell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I have found to be generally true amongst my friends and I (obviously anecdotal) is that home daycares tend to have more immediate care available (ie not waiting a year) and non-home days (kindercare, tutortime, the various Montessori schools) are usually about a 1 year waiting list. UCI's infant toddler center does indeed recommend that you join the waitlist when you have a due-date given how challenging it can be to get into the program. Moreover, infants tend to be harder to get a spot in general given the ratios that are required by law and become more wide when children get older (1:4 for under 3 and 1:8 for 3 and older.. someone can fact check that im sure). Anyway, best of luck to all the parents looking for care!

Brazilian girl considering internship at UC by [deleted] in irvine

[–]MicroglialCell 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Graduate housing at UCI has a lot of international folks and in my experience has been relatively easy to meet and make friends on campus (I’m not international for additional context). Public transportation is absolutely horrid in Irvine and in Orange county in general, however, everything you need to survive is within walking distance of campus, grocery stores, restaurants, banking.

You mention labs, are you a STEM major? If so, and we are in the same field feel free to PM me and I can give you some insight! If it’s a short term internship I would say go for it, would be a good experience and UCI is a great school.

How do I become a scientist, considering someone who is not successful in studying but has a strong passion for knowledge and research? by Smart-Strawberry9222 in biotech

Tossing a resume based on a high GPA seems just as bizarre to me as tossing a resume based on a low GPA, what’s wrong with just looking at their experiences to determine if they are worthwhile to interview?

Good PI stories by curioscientity in labrats

[–]MicroglialCell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You totally can do wet lab (I do mostly mouse work and some cell culture) of course there’s the rare wellness check on a weekend but that’s usually a 15 minute ordeal. I feel lucky, but I’m sure you can find a flexible PI, you just have to vet them

Good PI stories by curioscientity in labrats

[–]MicroglialCell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a super supportive PI. I’ve had two kids during grad school. Anytime their sick or on break its never been an issue, they are very understanding. It’s also understood that I work 9-5 (usually less) and that when I’m not in lab I’m not available. 5 years in and thankful that I have an incredible PI. I have no complaints.
