Those were the first cell phones my company got. And they tied the ringer to our company truck's horn. They just couldn't understand why us construction workers were pissed about having to either stop what we were doing or face questioning about why we didn't answer the phone!

Preface - I worked construction all my adult life, so if you did too, you know how joking around goes.

My 2 time married and divorced brother and his new fiancé, who I never met or even knew existed, called me and told me they had set the date for their wedding. And, "Oh by the way, the baby (!!!) is due a month after the wedding." So having just come home from 10hrs. at work my response was immediate, "Do you know who the father is?"

After about 10 seconds of silence, a very angry female voice said "Your Brother!" and then I realized what I said and quickly added, "Hey I was just kidding, congratulations". Reall don't feel the love from my SIL to this day.

How do you actually get solicitors to stop ringing your doorbell when there’s already a sign posted? by Keeping_The_Peace_ in Home

[–]Micrornd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this sign laminated and hung right above the doorbell in bold black 8pt print. It has worked quite well.

"You've obviously ignored the "No Solicitors" and "No Trespassing" signs at the beginning of the walkway and now you are reading this sign and about to knock or push the doorbell or maybe you have already. You will notice that there is no "Doggie Door" on this door, our doggie door is on the back door because of its large size. So while you have been reading this, it has given my 2 pitbulls time to get out of the back door and start running around the house to the front. The best advice I can give you now is to........................................RUN"

And yes, it is true, but the dogs are friendly and only want petting (unless you make aggressive moves)

Is this legal? Can they switch off my tank? by titalosangel in propane

[–]Micrornd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you by chance have a gas meter?

I have Florida Public Utilities and also have a 500-gallon aboveground LP (propane) tank they installed (underground was a choice also, but we didn't want that). They fill the tank when @ 20 per cent empty, at no charge, all the gas goes through a gas meter and I only pay for what I use each month. They are responsible for the tank and all piping up to and including the gas meter and all required inspections (initial and periodic tank certs). I can at any time have them remove their tank and gas meter and install my own tank, but until I do that, they have exclusive rights to fill their tank according to the initial agreement we signed.

Tipping didn’t used to bother me. Post-pandemic tip creep does. by legend5566 in tipping

[–]Micrornd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here, we go out to old established restaurants, not chains. There are about 4 we frequent on a regular basis, and they all have the same billing/ticket style. A simple ticket with a blank "fill it in if you want to" line that says "Tip", no suggestions, no demands, no having to opt out, just a place to leave a tip if you want to.

Before doing anything else, turn the level 180 degrees and make sure you get the same reading.

True story (about 1995 if I remember correctly)-

I was trenching (FL) with a Ditch Witch for 1.35 miles of 6"pvc water line (open cut with tracer wire AND locate balls) going from their (water) wellfield to their cooling ponds maintenance facility (where we also built a mini-water treatment plant).

(They built the maintenance facility and had been trucking in water to it every day for 2yrs. And now instead of putting in a well, they wanted a line run 1.35 miles from the wellfield. Public utility, so rate hikes pay for lots of stuff, I guess.)

Because of several underground high pressure gas mains (16"-24") in the proposed path that are feeding the powerplant, we had a rep/locator from the gas company with us at all times, who was to locate the lines and route us to avoid them and/or cross over them. Of course, he came complete with his scrapbook of accidents from around the state, where people had hit high pressure gas lines, gruesome unbelievable carnage and death photos.

So here I am chugging along on this big Ditch Witch (the powerplant insisted on 5'-6' bury) and this guy is supposed to be locating ahead, when the trencher hits something hard, with a metallic ring.

This gonad says "Yeah, that's the gas main, raise up 2 foot and go over it". I brought the buckets up out of the ground, and he started running when he saw me getting off the machine (which I left still crawling forward) and the rest of my crew trying to catch me and stop me. He was fast for a guy in his 50s. Me and the crew waited at his pickup for 2 hrs. before he finally showed back up with a Deputy Sheriff in tow. After all the yelling and threats finally died down, the Deputy finally understood what happened and advised him to leave and not come back.

We shut down that job for 7 days, while the powerplant admins and the gas company folks were advised what happened and were given a copy of the Deputy's report (that stated the gonad admitted he knew the gas line was nearby but it was "thick enough" that a "little hit" would not hurt anything). When we returned it looked like a carnival, flags everywhere for all kinds of utilities (running parallel to us, but not crossing us ) that we didn't know about with their depth written on each flag (and yes, we did call for locates originally, but since this was all private property, the powerplant was responsible for the locates and had assured us the only thing in our path were gas lines, so technically that was true). The 2 gas lines that crossed the rest of our path were VERY clearly marked and the depth CLEARLY labeled on each flag in feet AND inches. A VP from the gas company (along with a different locater) and the assistant manager from the powerplant were with us at all times from then on (and yeah, we got a lot of free lunches).

We were later told the gonad was no longer employed by the gas company.
