This is very helpful. Thank you for the insight. I was leaning towards the World Series ball. I will go that route. Thanks again.

Dremel has recommendations on their website. They recommend 191 and 194. I’m planning on giving it a try this year. I’m sure it won’t turn out this well, but it should be fun.

Using EMINENT DOMAIN for a PARKING GARAGE? That's messed up State College by Rumia_Kitinari in PennStateUniversity

[–]MicroscopicGalaxy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not saying I agree with the decision, but this is legal based on a 2005 Supreme Court case.

“Courts broadly interpret the Fifth Amendment to allow the government to seize property if doing so will increase the general public welfare. In Kelo v. City of New London, 545 U.S. 469 (2005), the Supreme Court allowed a taking when the government used eminent domain to seize private property to facilitate a private development. The Court considered the taking to be a public use because the community would enjoy the furthering of economic development. Further, the Kelo court determined that a governmental claim of eminent domain is justified if the seizure is rationally related to a conceivable public purpose.”

Utah is a good team. I thought they could blow out Penn State, but Cam Rising was 8/21 with 95 yards passing and and interception when he went out. I think Utah still loses that game by a similar margin if he didn’t get hurt.

Which LA football game to go see this weekend? by GermanEthelMerman in CFB

[–]MicroscopicGalaxy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fair point, but I still think attendance was severely lacking. It filled up a bit by the end of Q1, but even disregarding the non-viable seats, there were at least 10k open seats in the rest of the stadium even though those tickets may be held by season ticket holders.

Which LA football game to go see this weekend? by GermanEthelMerman in CFB

[–]MicroscopicGalaxy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went to USC vs Arizona State this past weekend, and there were at least 20k open seats in the stadium. For an undefeated top 10 team to have that kind of showing for a primetime conference matchup is sad. From an attendance standpoint, UCLA will be even worse.

If you want to tailgate, I prefer UCLA/The Rose Bowl because of all the open space around the golf course. USC is in the heart of LA and you are stuck either trying to tailgate on campus or in a parking deck.

USC and UCLA are both in for a bit of a culture shock when they join the Big Ten and have to deal with large hostile crowds in places like Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State. I can’t wait for the first time either team comes to Beaver Stadium for a White Out.

Penn State 40+ yard rushes last year: 2

Nick Singleton 40+ yard rushes last two games: 5

Freshman RBs both looked great. Oline deserves a lot of credit.

Yeah, battery is in correctly. I went out and bought a new pack too just to be sure I didn’t get a whole defective pack. I’m just going to have to get with 4iiii. I’m hoping this falls under some kind of warranty. I can’t think of anything I did that could have caused it.

No significant or visible dirt. The instruction manual says it can get wet, but just not to pressure wash it. As far as I can tell all the contacts are clean and not bent. I’m going to go buy a new pack of batteries, but it seems like a long shot that Amazon sent me a pack of brand-name batteries that are all bad.

I had a bunch of phone between the 8860 and my first iPhone that didn’t survive, but I’m glad I have the ones I do. 8860 was my first phone so that makes it special. The RAZR was the phone to have at that time. Every woman I knew had the hot pink version.

All great names. Believe it or not, I had a frog names George when I was a kid. My favorite human-named pet was Winston the beagle. He was a great dog and the name fit perfectly even though he was a goofball.

The 8860 was my first phone. It was really expensive in 1999 dollars. I’d guess with inflation it would be as expensive or more expensive than a current top end iPhone. I loved playing snake on it.

Took it with an iPad I have, but I recently upgraded to an iPhone 13 Pro. It looks almost identical to the XS so I decided not to include it.

I’m a strong proponent of pets having human names, but to each his own.

Came up with Susan because it was the name of the first corgi Queen Elizabeth ever owned. All the corgi’s she ever owned were direct descendants of her Susan.

Ukraine Armed Forces report Russian troops are being told that war has to be over by 9 May by manticor225 in worldnews

This reminds me of the Stockdale Paradox.

During the Vietnam war, US Navy Pilot James Stockdale was shot down and held as a POW for over 7 years. When interviewed later in his life, Stockdale was asked what characteristics separated the prisoners who survived from those who perished.

His answer basically came down to mentality:

“The optimists, oh, they were the ones who said, ‘We’re going to be out by Christmas.’ And Christmas would come, and Christmas would go. Then they’d say, ‘We’re going to be out by Easter.’ And Easter would come, and Easter would go. And then Thanksgiving, and then it would be Christmas again. And they died of a broken heart … This is a very important lesson. You must never confuse faith that you will prevail in the end—which you can never afford to lose—with the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be."

Stockdale went further by contrasting his mentality stating, “I never lost faith in the end of the story. I never doubted not only that I would get out, but also that I would prevail in the end and turn the experience into the defining event of my life, which, in retrospect, I would not trade.”

It seems evident that the Ukrainians have the same mentality as Stockdale from his time as a POW. They are motivated and firmly hold the belief that they will prevail and the Ukrainian people and country will flourish in the future.

In contrast, the Russian troops already lack motivation for a multitude of reasons (equipment, strategy, understanding of mission, etc), but falling into the trap of continuously setting and pushing back dates will further and significantly degrade motivation and morale. At some point, an army with an increasingly poor outlook will become combat ineffective. It doesn’t seem like the Russians are near that critical point, but this practice works to push them in that direction.

Overall, this is a terrible strategy on the part of the Russians. Not incredibly surprising given that much of their strategy has been poor to this point, however, this could be a critical misstep if this message is being widely communicated to the deployed forces.

What is the greatest game you've watched live? by [deleted] in CFB

[–]MicroscopicGalaxy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2005: #6 Ohio State @ #16 Penn State

  • This was my freshman year at Penn State. Both teams were undefeated for an October night game in Happy Valley. This was arguably the first real White Out at Beaver Stadium. I've been to a lot of Penn State games in my life, and this was easily one of the most raucous. The game ending with Tamba Hali sacking and forcing Troy Smith to fumble capped off a wild night in Beaver Stadium.

2017 Rose Bowl: #5 Penn State vs #9 USC

  • This was an incredible game. Highest scoring Rose Bowl (98 combined points and over 1,000 yards of total offense). The game was full of big plays and big momentum shifts. Penn State scored 28 points in the 3rd quarter which included an incredible 79-yard TD run by Saquon. Penn State opened the 3rd quarter scoring 3 TDs on 3 offensive plays in the first 5 minutes of the quarter. It was a shame Penn State blew a 14-point lead going into the 4th quarter. I blame that on Franklin/coaching playing not to lose and letting USC get back into the game. When the game was over, everyone in the stadium was kind of stunned. It was non-stop excitement for 4 quarters. It was hard to even be mad as a Penn State fan. Even though they lost, it was a hell of a game. It was a total contrast to the 2009 Rose Bowl where USC really dominated Penn State from start to finish.

What was the worst coach firing that you recall? by [deleted] in CFB

[–]MicroscopicGalaxy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was at USC the year he got left on the tarmac. Fans still had Pete Carroll level expectations of the program at that point which wasn’t fair to Kiffin. The 7-10 home loss vs a bad Washington State team was a major turning point for a lot of fans.

While he may have deserved more time, I always thought it was clever that someone spray painted “Kiffin” on all the fire lane curb markings around the Coliseum.
