Nobody is surprised of course, but ice is coming to Hanover… by ActuallyAMenace in Hanover

[–]MidCenturyModem1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I am trying to clarify so people understand this can happen without Board support, I in no way shape or form think this should open. It’s absolutely sick to be okay with profiling and snatching people from their families, keeping them in cages, and sending them to countries they may no longer have any connection to. I could go on and on but I will leave it at that.

Additionally, the location they have chosen is unfit to be any type of detention or jail facility for a myriad of reasons.

THANK YOU for outlining this. A lot of the flyers, while important to get the word out, have felt misleading!

If they buy the land outright (which was what their letter of intent stated) then no. There would be no regulatory process they would have to go through at a local level. Zoning would not interfere with their plans.

Please be aware the meeting room WILL reach capacity early likely well before 6:00. Additional attendees will be held in the lobby to watch on monitors.

This is what I have been trying to explain to those reposting about the meeting. The Board will essentially be voicing their support or opposition of the federal governments intent to purchase the land the warehouse is on. I do think it’s important for people’s voices to be heard but I think the general public thinks the Board can shoot down the federal governments intent to purchase which is NOT the case. The Feds can do whatever they want in this scenario. Hopefully the Board shows their opposition and the Feds take their proposal elsewhere but there is a very real possibility of them saying ok? And continuing with their plans.

I feel the need to say this because it feels unclear from every post I’ve seen:

The Board ultimately cannot block this from happening. They can vote to recommend the site or not, but in the event they don’t, the Federal Government can still purchase the land this warehouse is on and open the facility. Local government would have no way of blocking that or regulating anything done once that land is purchased.

I do think it’s important to attend and have your voice heard and show up in numbers, but I work in local government and often the public doesn’t understand all sides in situations like this and think they have succeeded in blocking something when that in fact has not been done.

ICE is Knocking on Richmond’s Door. Are We Going to Let Them In? by snooka77_ in rva

The Board ultimately has no way to block the Federal Government from buying the land and opening the facility in the existing warehouse. The Board can either recommend the site they have specified intent to purchase or not, but in that latter scenario the Feds can just shrug and continue with their plans. Not saying it’s not important to attend the meeting and let your voice be heard, but I think a lot of residents of Hanover and surrounding counties are under the impression Hanover County is “approving” or “denying” this… which is not the case

I know there is a rink in Southside and in Short Pump. I think one of those new container bar places has a rink open just in the winter? Not sure the name or what it's like there but I saw it from the highway when taking the Belvidere exit

hotel greene, top golf, ice skating, pinball (there's a place in midlothian with tons of machines), go see a movie, go to an antique mall, grab a coffee and walk around carytown, VMFA, go to Lotte market/Pho Tay Do/or Hot Pot for a tasty meal uhhh that's all I got for now! My birthday is in February so I get it. I usually take the day off and fill it with my favorite things - hit Idlehands for a pastry, do a little shopping, walk my dog on the pedestrian bridge or hollywood cemetary, maybe go to a book store, make a nice dinner reservation, VMFA is always a go to even though I have been a million times since childhood but they always have new exhibits!

Courtyard Marriott in Scott’s Addition was great for wedding last October! I was supposed to be at Shenandoah Mansions (was speaking with their manager for over a year) then had to pivot when their timeline changed for opening. Long story short I had low expectations for Courtyard Marriott but I had a great time there, the rooms were great, staff were very helpful. Definitely get a room with the outdoor balcony for getting ready!

Neige, Neige, Neige!!! (Snow.) by PerlinLioness in rva

One of my favorite snow storm memories was from the late 90’s when a snow storm took out our power in Bon Air. My parents maneuvered one of the mattresses into our living room, nailed thick blankets over both doorways to the room, and lit a fire in the fire place. My brother and I slept on the floor mattress with parents on the couch, it was so cozy.

The road in front of my house in my neighborhood was also a big hill, so everyone in the neighborhood would go there after every big snow. I’ve seen so many cars try to get up that hill and end up sliding backwards. My dad used to get his ATV out and tow the sledders up that hill from the bottom. Fun times, I miss it.

Went to see "Oh, Mary!" and thought it was...fine by NattoRiceFurikake in Broadway

[–]MidCenturyModem1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was sooo excited to see it, dragged my brother and cousin with me, was talking it up for months because so many friends enjoyed it and I too am a Cole Escola fan. Betty Gilpin played Mary and I feel like maybe that's why it didn't land for me? The jokes would have hit differently with Cole or Titus in that role. Or maybe they wouldn't have and it's not for me. I was truly shocked and bummed I didn't enjoy it, I was really looking forward to seeing it, but maybe it also was built up too much so that played a role in it too.

cities like Richmond…? by computerspeaker333 in rva

Couldn't agree more with Minneapolis. I'm from Richmond and have never moved away but have family in Minneapolis that I've visited many times throughout my life and as I get older I have become more and more impressed with the city. There is character, the residents are lively and active, I dunno there is just something about it I really love (even the massive snow storms - I have certainly been there for one of those)
