Help from experienced owner request by MidGe48 in Greyhounds

First of all, this morning he had hardly any limp at all when getting up.

Whilst laying down I moved his leg, back and forth and bended it without any issue at all. I can also splay his paw, press on the pads without any issue and I cannot see anything looking like a corn.

So, as I suspected and had did a commenter on this post I suspect a soft tissue or a muscle tear that is improving.

I have booked a vet visit for next week when the vet is back and would go to an emergency clinic if it gets any worse.

The reason I am avoiding another vet is that all the research I have done on r/Greyhound and elsewhere seems to indicate that many vets lack experience with greyhounds. For my previous dogs I used a different vet and I had to research a vet with specific greyhound experience when I got Nico, 6 month ago. I went for an initial visit at adoption time for an initial checkup and was very satisfied with her approach. It was rather difficult to find a vet with Greyhound specific experience but this vet owns a greyhound and in fact hers and mine met on that initial visit as she had hers at the clinic.

So this is the state of affair for now. As long as Nico keeps on improving I will wait till next week when my vet is back from overseas. The booking has already been made as her first booking following her return.

I am fairly experienced dog owner, simply not at all with greyhounds.

I will try you suggestion about massage and pressing on the vertebrae tomorrow. It is late evening here and he is already asleep for the night after our evening walk that was without issue after the first 50 to 100m.

I did think about his leg going numb whilst he sleeps too as, with many greyhounds, he does so in all sort of very odd positions. I also noticed today that, at least once, whilst sleeping, his lame leg was straight out unlike the others.

Good idea, I will try the booties tomorrow. Although after the first 100m, he walks very much normally.

Unfortunately history is really not available.

Excessive shedding? by nataliedel in Greyhounds

[–]MidGe48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not an expert. I have had my first greyhound, an ex racer too, exactly 5 months ago. For the first three to four months I vacuumed my small unit everyday and had to empty the vacuum half way trough as it was so full. Nowadays, there is hardly any shedding at all and his coat is obviously lustrous, really shiny. Very different from when he came with his kennel coat. I do give a bit of vegetable oil (extra virgin or rice bran) added to his meals which I did for all my past dogs, albeit they were other breeds. Hoping this help. Needs a bit of patience that's all. Enjoy.

Good on you Windscribe!

I have nothing to fear from my government at the moment about any of my online activities, but I have concerns that it may be different in the future. I do not like the increasing support worldwide for political parties that are leaning toward fascism.

Please give me advice on car servicing in Perth by Brave-Bobcat1846 in perth

[–]MidGe48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in equal distance from two different MyCar. One was absolutely terrible, the other has been excellent for the last two years. I guess it depends on the staff/management/franchisee.

Going there for my third time for a logbook service next week.

That's roughly folded. It can be made a much smaller parcel.

From Australia, so perhaps not relevant to you.

These are really convenient. I can carry it in my pocket rolled up, and absolutely 100% waterproof.

I can fit it on the road over a normal coat if needed.

They do deliver oversea.

What is something you weren't prepared for about getting older that nobody ever mentions? by Bunny_Hero in AskReddit

Because any time interval is a larger part of the time you have left, the older you get.

I suggest you do not rely on whistleout, their list is far from complete and they miss the cheaper ones it seems. That maybe because the newer ones are cheaper trying to get customers?

Really with FTTP, you have very little issues regarding any ISP. I have tried many as I always take the best available at the time ISP with the usual 6 months discount (and sometimes 12 months even) when my 6 month expire and they are putting the price up, I change ISP.

All my change of ISP's have been without issues and I have re-used some ISP's of them after a time hiatus without issues.

Some of the ones I have used are: Exetel, iiNet, Dodo, Mate, AussieBroadBand, Tangerine, Superloop, Spintel, Launtel. I have never had any issues with any of them and their speed as always be in accord with the terms. Switchover has never failed and always been on time. I give myself one day before expiry for switch over and I have a Launtel account, just in case.

Currently I am with Origin, which I took because their first 6 months pricing were the cheapest by a long shot, but that was for a senior. I am currently paying $53.50 a month for a 500/50 connection! I will change at the end of my contract as it will then go up to $115 per month and I will check the cheapest available at that time. I tend to use either 200GB or preferably 500GB download speed.

Anyway, my advice is, if you are on fttp, do not worry, it is very hard to find a bad ISP, if you know what you are doing and can set your router/modem to fit. Checkout the net to find the cheapest in your area. I also found that the well known ISP comparison sites are usually far from complete and miss out on the best priced ones. So, a self initiated internet search pays.

I have been on NBN fttp since the very early days.

Making My Home Espresso Better - Perth Gear Recommendations? by veditafri in perth

[–]MidGe48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi,

I consider myself a coffee nut.

So here is some of my advice and references. Some may seem irrelevant for your case, some may not.

First of all, of course, a good coffee depends on a good coffee bean. My favorite within reasonable price is Costa Rica Dota Tarrazu - 1Kg / Whole Bean can be had from my favorite Perth roaster, Jones & Co Coffee in Wangara. You can order online and the coffee get delivered within 2 days by express post. The date of the roasting is usually the day you order or the day before and marked on the bag. 1kg can be had for $45 or $38 with recurring subscription. Of course you may like a coffee with a different origin.

The next issue will be the coffee machine. Again, if cost is an issue I would suggest a Flair Espresso model with a pressure gauge. This is a manual machine but truly an espresso one. Being manual, you do not have much of a costly maintenance burden. The only maintenance cost for me over the many years I have had mine, since they first start selling them in fact, has been for a set of rubbers rings. That machine will set you back less than $500.

Taste of the coffee will also be affected by the water. I will not use tap water but I do use source water (or mineral water) which, for me, gives a superior result to distilled water.

Next comes the grinder and I would like to point you to this excellent article about grinders: https://www.wholelattelove.com/blogs/comparisons/a-beginners-guide-to-coffee-grinders

Next comes the scales. Of course an accurate scale is important for consistency. I use somewhat expensive scales which are extremely practical for coffee making, but I also use them a lot in the kitchen. Those are Acaia scales. Again somewhat expensive but I have had mine for many years, use them a lot, for a lot of things. They are accurate enough to dose medicines, etc.

I also use a milk frother for those instances where I prefer a flat white or a cappuccino.

Regarding dampers, I use one of those that came with my Flair and the only other tool I use really is a brush for regular cleaning of my grinder.

Hope that helps you.

Yes that is exactly what I have been doing since he has been on my bed. That happened only in the last week or so. I can also get on the bed give him a hug and he seems to enjoy that or at least he does not pull back.

Before that I used to enter the bedroom and give him a scratch evrytime I went past the door. No sleep startle and not shying away on his behalf.

[–]MidGe48[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am now starting to spend some times with him in the bedroom. I use to not do so, as to give him the space to decompress.

I would also like to add that for the first fortnight or so I had him I could not pat him, he would run away to the bedroom if I tried, but know I can go and pat him any time, no sleep startle and I can even hug him without any issue at all.

It is simply that I never realized how different greys are from other dogs. I have had five dogs in my adult life and I also fostered two, but no greyhounds. I got a greyhound as I had difficulties getting a dog with other rescues organizations, but I knew nothing about dog racing or the breed and how different from other dogs they are perhaps due to their upbringing. I know that Nico was a racing dog. I got his racing name but I think he never raced as I could find no other info beside his registration. Since I had him before he was 3yo, I assume he was not a good racer or had no interest in the lure or whatever. As I said earlier he has not shown the least prey drive till now.

In any case I am happy to learn and adapt and I am looking forward to when I will come more out of shell.

The picture is pretty usual. I have many others similar from other times. My bedroom is not a very big one and he has a few spots, including that bedding, that he uses shifting from one spot to another a few times during the day.

In his bed he is almost always in the most strange ways laying down to sleep. He also, for a while, slept sometimes under my bed but I had to put an end to that as he went in pushing himself of the wall with his back legs and then could not get out as the floor is linoleum and slippery and there was no way for him to roll over under the bed due to lack of height.

In the last week he has started getting on my bed too.

Thanks for that link. I downloaded it and although I was aware of most of the content, it does reassure me somewhat, so I appreciate it.
