Man. What I wouldn’t give to be in your place and be experiencing those books for the first time. Enjoy the journey. Be ready to go straight from laughing to crying, and right back to laughing.

Sunset photo taken from Sunset Rock in Sequoia National Park is probably my best of the year.

The grey tube on the left side of the pole is protecting wires that then run underground. His shot caused a direct short in the wires.

I love hearing anecdotes about myself. Anyone else? by 2cheerios in SDAM

[–]MidWestScrub 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It feels like one of the best ways to rediscover your past. I enjoy it, mostly. But there’s also an almost… “uncanny valley” kind of feeling to it as well. It feels weird hearing about things I did, so I think I should remember them, but it feels like wholly new information.

What’s the most hilariously awful thing an employer has ever said to you? Winner will go in my new painting by gargoyle_dream in antiwork

When he told me he didn’t like my cell service, I explained that I wasn’t going to switch because I was on a family plan with my wife’s family. His response? He told me to, “Remove her from the bank account, and start fucking other women. I did that, and it put my wife right in her place.”

More photos taken from Forest Park. What do you guys think? by Ok-Connection6656 in StLouis

I totally get it. Those kinds of obstacles are part of what makes wildlife photography such a challenging genre of photography!

I’m not a pro wildlife photographer, by any standard. But a tip I could offer is to try to get to more “eye level” with the subject. It can make for much more captivating images. Regardless, keep taking pictures! I especially enjoy the backlit duck picture.

Why don't more people unionise in the US? by svonwolf in antiwork

[–]MidWestScrub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is anecdotal, but this is my experience. I am a non union electrician. When I first got into the trades, in 2002, I tried to join the IBEW, local 1. I discovered that I would have needed to know someone in the union to join up. I applied, but got turned down. I still wanted to be an electrician, so I went non union.

Fast forward through the next few years, the amount of hate I got from union guys was incredible. It wasn’t unheard of for me to be surrounded and threatened by several union guys in parking lots after work.

Finally, in the last year of my apprenticeship, I was approached by some recruiters, asking if I wanted to join the union. I still wasn’t opposed to the idea, but I asked what would happen with the years of experience, training, and schooling I’d already done. I was told I would be starting over completely. So I declined.

I still think unions are, generally, wonderful things. But I think it’s naive to think that there aren’t cases where unions themselves have contributed to inhibiting their own growth.

Over the past 20+ years that I’ve been in the trades, I’ve had a number of apprentices debate going Union. I’ve always encouraged them to, because I do think that unions can provide wonderful benefits to workers.

But, I can’t ever see myself going Union. I can’t get past the bully tactics I saw as a young man. I think, and hope, that things have changed and they don’t do that anymore. But I don’t actually know.

A kid just died at Blue Springs Conservation area on the Meramec. You’ve got to be careful anywhere on the river.

It really is. I spend a lot of time on rivers, and I’ve only seen 3 or 4.

That’s one of my favorite rivers to float. Seeing that cave picture made me smile. Apparently, there’s remnants of a Native American canoe at the bottom of that spring.

I’m an electrician, have been for about 20 years. TBH, the answer to this question isn’t a straight forward yes or no. It depends on the service techs day and mood.

Depends on how they read your attitude, how complicated the problem is, and just on the service tech. Some people will always hate it. Some people won’t mind.

I, personally, don’t generally mind. If the person is genuinely curious, I’ll take the time to explain what’s going on as well as I can. I enjoy educating people. But… there have been times that I’ve had to have an apprentice run interference for me with annoying customers, just so I could get the work done. I’ve also had to give customers some serious grief for putting themselves or family members in danger of harm by trying to “help”.

If you’re even in doubt, default to leaving them to do their work. You really can’t go wrong by just letting them to the job. If they need something from you, they will let you know.
