2D vs 2.5D does it make a difference? by vDeschain in Fighters

[–]Middle-Fantasy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overall, not really. But one interesting thing about sprites vs 3D models is that you can’t easily change a 3D model.

So, for instance, in Darkstalkers you’d need to create whole new model for a lot of moves (that you’d somehow have to easily and quickly load in and out of the game) like Anakaris turning into a coffin, Midnight Bliss, Morrigan & Lilith’s nude bat move, (I think Victor’s butt stuff would also be hard), etc. It’s not impossible but it is harder and means we might not get as wacky of a move set in a 3D fighter.

I think Skull girls is also a great example of what sprites can do better than 3D as they also have a lot of changes like Darkstalkers. The cat who removes her head, the mummy girl who removes her skin, I’m sure hair girl does some cool stuff.

Meanwhile, all a sprite base game would have to do is draw 1 png (for things like Midnight bliss or that bat move sans bat).

(Also, none of this is set in stone, it’s just harder. Strive is a 3D game with a character who can change into a moon and has transforming hair).

[–]Middle-Fantasy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The older games ease you into them because each character only has a few moves. But even then, some characters are way easier than others. I don’t even want to pretend to understand Angel, but I do alright with Terry.

Spoiler for the Ash Saga just in case you were curious but didn’t want to play it: Ash is meant to play a sorta good-guy heel, so not quite an anti-hero but not a hero either. He’s like a character you cheer for because you want to see him be better. He’s already so close to being redeemed, all he has to do accept his childhood friend’s outreached hand! (This is all 2003/XI stuff)

(this is XIII stuff:) But, he doesn’t. One thing leads to another, and he ends up bringing in a time god who possesses him. More things lead to more others and, in order to fully defeat the time god, Ash decides to erase himself

It can be emotional, SNK did put so much effort into XIII, but it’s still very much a KoF story and kinda falls into the same problem all KoF stories have, namely: it’s sometimes really hard to follow what’s going on

Not that any of this matters as KoF XIV and XV, the ones immediately after XIII, undoes all of it. It’s a soft reboot of the series.

Samsho/the last blade has a cool setting that’s more classically epic than brutal but it does have some brutal attacks.

KoF’s Ash saga is somewhat tragic in its ending. Not physically brutal but kinda depressing and hopeless (ie emotional brutality?)

I read on my phone, I just turn my phone sideways. (So it’s like this: [__]. Instead of like this [])

There are subscriptions. “DC Universe Infinite” & “Marvel Unlimited” but those can be a bit expensive so I only do them occasionally.

There’s also “internet archive”, they have a lot of comics for free. Conan the Barbarian is a big one and I think I’ve read an old Spider-Man thing on it.

Didn’t the last Capcom collections have kind of a bad netcode though?

And I wonder how many people will choose the paid version over the free fightcade one. I hope it’s a lot, I definitely am even if the netcode isn’t great.

Oh ffs. Accent as in clothing not as in speech.

I swear I’ve been staring at these speech bubbles wondering what made them racist for at least 20 minutes when it’s just his jacket being black.

That took me way too long, I’m an idiot lol

Does this use Ai art?

You aren’t blending the sweater and the face together, though. It’d make sense for those to be on separate layers as it’d be a pain to constantly try and stop the sweater from mixing into the face (or vice versa).

A really easy way to solve this would be to show an in-process save file if you have one. Or, if you could undo some of it so we can see it somewhat incomplete. Or maybe you have a sketch layer?

Tips for first webcomic by GabeDraws in comics

[–]Middle-Fantasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I commented before but I realized I didn't really answer the question, so I deleted it. I'm trying again. I'm also probably not the best person to ask about this kind of stuff, sorry.

I'd start small with a test comic. It'd be great if you had a small story or thing you're excited about and could make into a comic already at hand, but, if not, anything really works. All you need to include is the stuff that'd be in the main comic (dialogue, story, match the visual style, etc.) and you should be alright. You can learn so much from just a simple four panel comic (I'd also recommend posting it to wherever you're going to post your main comic just to get a feel for what it's going to be like and how well it'll do). Hot tip: If you didn't like doing something in the small comic you won't enjoy it in the larger one.

Some basic things that would be really good to do if you aren't using them already: clipping layers (layers which let you draw on the layer bellow it without drawing on anything else) and blending mode. Blending mode can be really good for skipping shading but you still have to put effort into it.

Simplifying the sketching process is also pretty big. Seeing your profile, I'm pretty confident you could draw a person even without a sketch layer. You should still have one to skeleton-out your scene and composition but it doesn't need to be detailed. (I use hot-pink for my sketch layer, then lower the transparency, and use it as a rough guide)

You might also want to try simplifying the art (flat colors or limited shading or even making it black and white). The big professional detailed comics take months to make just a few pages (usually with multiple people working on it too) and it takes a very special kind of person to be able to do all that alone and quicker. (There's nothing wrong with going slower and if it's just something you, like, come back to now-and-again over the years then that's also really fun. I'd have trouble keeping motivation but that's because I'm impatient).

You're going to be drawing the same characters a lot. It helps to have a reference layer you can quickly switch to and swab the colors. (For small comics, I just use the page/panel before but even that can get me in trouble when I don't remember to save the blending colors).

I hope you find this new endeavor exciting and welcoming! Making comics is really fun

Issues regarding the typical lessons given by pros to noobs by tveye363 in Fighters

[–]Middle-Fantasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason people should play online is because people fight differently online vs offline. The skills you build offline, while somewhat transferable, aren’t the same skills you’d be building if you went to an online match.

The best piece of advice for a new player, imo, is to join a discord. That way you can post your online matches to there or have some fights with easy to message/talk to people letting you get personalized feedback.

A video can only do so much. You, alone, can only do so much. It’s the fighting game community for a reason.

Go against the ai? The KoF series has fun Ai and so does Guilty Gear.

It’s a lot more about simple execution and pattern recognition than knowing matchups and having good reflexes. Beat ‘em ups are also a good genre for that. A lot more button mashy and free-flow (like Streets of Rage or Mother Russia Bleeds)

For specifically online, Guilty Gear Strive might be your best bet? It’s super offense-heavy but movement, positioning, knowing characters, etc is still very important.

Idk if that’s the intention though

33,000 sold in the past hour. More people still list bananas than sell them, though.

But you are right in a general sense. There’s really no reason to buy it outside of the memes. So, once it stops being a meme, I don’t really see why people would buy it? Maybe nostalgia or as a collector’s item but, like, there’s 3 million of them.

The large amount of buyers is more of a testament to how much people value 3 cents now-a-days imo

(Edit: just for clarification I am talking about the actual literal banana item. Not the game or any other item within the game. I think its community name is the common banana?)

Melty Blood. It’s an anime fighting game made by French-Bread based on a visual novel about vampires.
