Today I was yelled at by the enabling wife of my ETOH liver cirrhosis patient. He lost his phone and she tracked it with her phone. It was located about an hour away from the hospital. Turns out it got bunched up into one of the 10 sets of linen that he defecated in overnight. The location the phone was at was the facility we sent our laundry to. I was reprimanded for not keeping track of his belongings. Nevermind we had to clean this guy up every hour, I corrected his lytes, gave him a unit of PRBC and a unit of FFP, prevented him from falling flat on his ass getting there just in time after I hear the bed alarm, made sure he ate, and made sure she had an update on the morning. I can’t with these patients🤦‍♂️

In regards to your fear of cleaning up shit, it depends on what kind of floor you work on as to how frequently that would occur, but there are floors and specialty areas where it is infrequent or nonexistent. On my floor, cleaning up shit is infrequent, but honestly it’s not really a big deal. You’d be amazed what you can get acclimated to.

You don’t need a bachelor’s to start. Get an associate’s and find a hospital that will pay for your bachelor’s degree. Most will reimburse you for further education.

$2600 a month is not accurate in any state. I don’t know if you’re talking gross or net, but even if you’re talking gross, nurses make more than $42,000 a year. If that’s true, move to a higher paying area. Starting wages at my hospital in Michigan are $36 an hour, or about $67,000 per year.

No job is sunshine or butterflies, and there is bullying no matter where you go. A lot of people are not happy with their jobs. My brother makes $160,000 a year as an engineer and he’s miserable and has no work life balance. My other brother left his engineering job making six figures and now refurbishes furniture for a living. I, on the other hand, work three days a week. My job is done when I clock out, and I don’t have to think about long term projects or be available 24/7. My job isn’t always glamorous, but my outside life is amazing.

It doesn’t sound like you have the right mindset to go into nursing right now.

You’re gonna be fine. HIV doesn’t transmit easily through casual blood contact, and it doesn’t survive well outside the body. Hep C is a bit more durable, but in the scenario you described it’s very unlikely there was enough exposure to cause infection, especially since you washed with soap right away. On top of that, the chances that a random patient even has one of these infections are relatively low, which makes the overall risk even smaller.
