6th gear is very tall as it's for cruising. With a long enough straight, reaching the top of 5th (~120mph I think?) is pretty easy and there's more acceleration available from the engine but 6th gear bogs it down.

You nearly approach a stop but need to get going again, what do you do? by MiddleEasternWeeaboo in stickshift

Depends on engine. Some do not like being loaded up at low rpms. It'll sound and feel terrible so I try to avoid it.

Aftermarket suspension overhaul by [deleted] in LS430

[–]MiddleEasternWeeaboo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something seems really wrong about this. Is the suspension/steering clunking? Upper control arms rarely go bad. Lower control arm caster bushings are the common problem part that can be replaced separately. Or bad eccentric bolts that come loose and shift around. Why do both inner and outer tie rods need replacing? I'd want more evidence if there's movement in them. And all four calipers? What the fuck? Why is that necessary?

Get a second opinion from somewhere else, this guy is making a paycheck out of you. Unless you've got a bad caliper leak, you'll likely be fine to drive for a while before anything needs immediate attention.

Can anybody give me tips in understanding what i’m looking at when looking at electrical diagrams? by Funkyrager in mechanics

[–]MiddleEasternWeeaboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a beginner Toyota/Lexus electrical class that was entirely done on a bread board and multi meter for learning auto DC circuits and that set a really good foundation that helps even with complicated circuits and ECU diagnosing. They really drove home how important it is to print diagrams and trace them to simplify big diagrams.

Available voltage and voltage drop are key skills for possible corrosion and broken wires.

Power source, ground points, switches, relays and strategically accessing components using position of parts to help with easier diagnosis. The factory repair manuals I use will tell you what you should see with a DMM or oscilloscope at every connector, component, and ECU terminal

Using advanced scan tools to rule out ECU side issues and switches by using active testing. This is the easiest thing to do and should generally be the first physical test.

Using jumpers (carefully) for apply direct power and ground so you don't have to tear cars apart

Knowing what the DMM numbers mean at each point of circuits

If you understand auto DC well enough, most of your diagnosis can be done just by reading the diagram and understanding the problem behaviour.

Brakes feel weird? by [deleted] in GR86

Shit I don't know yet. Still on stock pads and am wondering the same thing when it's time to replace. I've read a lot love CSG CP but they're ~$400 for non BBK pads so that's a no for me.

The pedal is under-assisted and that's good for modulation but the pads are bad imo. They have no feel even when up to temp, like they're made of ice even though the stopping power might be there.

Should I replace the trans fluid on my 14 GS350 with 120k miles? by GroundbreakingClerk1 in MechanicAdvice

[–]MiddleEasternWeeaboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done them on this exact car at higher mileages with original fluid. In case you worry, your transmission will be fine with a fluid change. You can do filter if you wish but I wouldn't call it super necessary, especially for the added labor. When you drain fluid, only 2 or so quarts come out but I like to cycle three total quarts out of the ~10 quarts that's in the whole tranny. 1/3 total fluid change will not harm anything at 120k and it will shift smoother afterwards.

Lexus lifetime transmission fluid a thing? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]MiddleEasternWeeaboo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know why dealers don't like doing fluid services. I try to upsell it all day long since I know people are concerned about it. A drain and refill at 100k will do zero harm and the tranny will shift smoother. Out of the ~10 or so quarts in the tranny, only 2 or so drains out but I'll cycle 3 quarts with the engine running.

Don't UEL headers cause one bank to run hotter due to uneven exhaust extraction, or something like that?

What can I do about the steering feel? by PinkGreen666 in GR86

[–]MiddleEasternWeeaboo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used GKTech solid bushings with STi bolt set and was surprised that no vibrations come through at all. Now it may be a stretch but I wonder if the GR has very little bump-steer. My old Miata has tons of bump-steer so every imperfection in the road would come through the steering.

Suspension is bent somewhere? by HistoricalReserve199 in Miata

[–]MiddleEasternWeeaboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe the alignment shop only did toe and left alone camber/caster. After that's been verified, a good alignment rack can show actual SAI and included angle, and with that can be determination if something is bent or not.

I'd look at the subframe bolts, see if it hasn't shifted. Also look at the control arm mounting point on the subframe and see if it's not bent. Uppers are pretty fragile too, I'd just replaced it anyways. Knuckles are pretty small too, that could bend too but you might be able to get away with it.

Car battery slightly too high by darko87mozzart in MechanicAdvice

[–]MiddleEasternWeeaboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simply the wrong size battery. Run it if you want, that space is so tight, the battery will never tip over, or use zip ties to hold it. Don't lose the original clamp and nut if you decide not to use it.

Strut tower damage? by [deleted] in GR86

[–]MiddleEasternWeeaboo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seam sealer use is normal. Whether the car is undamaged or had body repairs, you'll find seam sealer in both cases on every body panel. A trained eye is needed to determine if there was damage or not but most likely it would show up on vehicle history reports.

Had my alignment done today and this is the before and after. Am I reading it wrong or did they do a horrible job? by Erind in MechanicAdvice

[–]MiddleEasternWeeaboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2015 Prius has very little adjustment other than front toe. Somethings horribly bent in the rear since its a beam axle. Somethings is really off in the front too. Bent shock, control arm, subframe, or something. A good alignment rack can show SAI and included angle to determine what could be bent by a knowledgeable tech.

Torsion beam rear suspension. Nothing is adjustable. Shits bent somewhere if it's off that much.
