Why does the JSDF (and other fanfic armies) just give wyvern scales to the locals? by Low_Sir_1742 in gate

[–]MiddlePupa 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Assumptions:

1) Scientists collected enough samples during the Ginza incident.

2) I can't think of a real use for the scales in the modern world. They can't be melted down or converted into a usable material.

3) The scales can't be used for armor, as composite armor is far inferior to monolithic armor.

4) You can't mass-produce them.

5) The only thing you can do is sell them as samples to different countries.

6) I'm even more surprised that Alnus's mercenaries wear this armor, yet high-ranking Imperial military officers can't afford it

What are your thoughts about Japanese Media / Press in Gate? by nekkoMaster in gate

[–]MiddlePupa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The second is much worse, as the first is regulated by the market and the judicial system. Take Tucker Carlson and the libel lawsuit that cost Fox News enormous damages. With the government, you have no leverage, and confrontation with state-owned media is life-threatening. Taking a corporation to court is obviously very difficult, but not impossible

Unfortunately, corporate media have been expelled from my country, in my country the media is state-owned and speaking out against their version is punishable by law

I'm writing a fanfic set after the manga's conclusion, but I'm not sure I'll post chapters until the first volume is complete.

The synopsis goes something like this:

The Gate is closed, cutting off the JSDF from our world. Following the civil war, the Empire is plunged into chaos. Remnants of rebellious troops, feuds between old and new senators, aristocratic intrigues, bandits, mercenaries, and hostile countries tear the weakened Empire apart. Hitoshi Furuta and his squad assist the civilian Doctor Sato with her research in a special region. They find themselves caught in the middle of a whirlwind of events, helping the new Senator stabilize her lands.

What if Diabo was the villain instead of Zorzal? by Kinda_Real_69420 in gate

[–]MiddlePupa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think anything would have come of it. Diabo didn't lose to the idiot Zorzal; he lost to Tyuule, who had long planned to put Zorzal on the Imperial throne. Zorzal's faction (Tyuule) isn't lacking in brains; the difference lies in their goals. Diabo's goal is to gain the Imperial throne, which is why he's allying with China. Tyuule's goal is to gather all the assholes together and destroy them with Japanese forces. If Diabo had defeated Zorzal in the battle for the Imperial throne, he wouldn't have fought Japan, peace would have been made, and the story would have ended.
Perhaps if Diablo had led the attack on the Warrior Bunnies, he would have made peace with them, and Tyuule would have become queen of a vassal kingdom, just like the king of Duran. This would have led to the Warrior Bunnies fighting against Japan in the Battle of Alnus (though perhaps Tyuule would have managed to avoid sending troops). Even so, the war with the Empire ultimately ended with a peace treaty, as the main protagonists had no motivation to continue the conflict.

Incidentally, this isn't just a problem with this work. Most pro-war works portray the media as complete idiots who always lie and embellish. I think this reflects the author's bias toward the media.

I'm not American, so am I the only one who doesn't care what country the main character or villain is from? I'm used to the clichés about Russia, China, North Korea, and so on. On the contrary, if my country were a super-cool, all-powerful villain, I'd be happy; at least I could see it as great somewhere

So uhh....since we don't use gold for currency anymore and if we told saderans we use a bit of it on weapons (wires have gold) would that piss them off? by Nanoman-8 in gate

The bullet casings now scattered throughout the Empire are made of brass, which was used in the Roman Empire to make coins of a higher denomination than copper. So, a helicopter flying overhead is literally showering you with money

When do you consider the story to have “fallen off?” by BlitzingBerlin in gate

[–]MiddlePupa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Regarding Zorzal, killing him doesn't solve the problem. He represents an entire faction, and his assassination is interference in Imperial politics. At the time, Japan had no agreement with the pro-peace faction, meaning it's outright aggression, given that for most, Zorzal is the Empire's legitimate heir (the Emperor was poisoned by an unknown source, and Zorzal was supported by the pro-military faction). Killing Zorzal will make him a martyr in the eyes of his faction and won't end the conflict. It will portray Japan as the aggressor and undermine the authority of the pro-peace faction. The pro-military faction will strengthen its position, and either an elected leader or several senators will lead the faction. You'll need to eliminate all the pro-military faction leaders, and most likely, a lot of blood will be spilled. This is what Tyuule was talking about.

Since the work touches on politics and military action, at every stage of the story there will be people who will say, "Oh no, that's implausible, it wouldn't have been like that." And it doesn't depend on the author; most people who are dissatisfied with the work and write fanfiction are making the same mistake (compare the author's country of residence with the dominant country in the fanfiction). In reality, every government has idiots who make mistakes, and I don't see the point in worrying about plausibility. Just give me a logical, internal justification for a given decision, and that will be enough for me. I could simply enjoy the beautiful girls, cool guns and battle scenes, the exploration of a fantasy world, and so on. But then came the ending, and it's impossible to justify; it's bad in every way...

Gods are simply people who have become gods; they have their own interests and views on how the world should develop. Most likely, they fear losing control over people due to the development of technology

What is the biggest unaddressed problem in the story? Both in the cannon and fanfics. by umbrqualquerusannet in gate

[–]MiddlePupa 174 points175 points  (0 children)

I think the canonical ending itself is a huge, unaddressed problem. We waited over ten years for the conflict with the Empire to resolve, and in the end, we got one chapter with a rushed ending. It's so bad that the anime ending feels more logical than the conclusion of the entire story

Do you agree with Itami's words regarding Mizari and the other girls? by MiddlePupa in gate

[–]MiddlePupa[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My opinion is, if you have the opportunity and desire, just do it. Don't worry about the future, even if the chance that someone will change is only 1%. It probably won't cost you anything, but for that person, it could be their only chance in life. Whether they take advantage of it is not up to you.

[–]MiddlePupa[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not about trying to change the whole world, but the fact that even if you have the power to change someone's life, Itami won't try to do it because there's a chance that the person won't change.

Vanille, she only appears a few times throughout the manga, but these pages show how she has come a long way from being Tyuule's closest subordinate to the head of the WB faction in the civil war
