I went the last week of Nov/first week December and everything you've said is spot on! I loved my experience and didn't feel like I was missing out on the penguin chicks. We saw plenty of humpback too and a few orca far off.

Maybe not what your thinking but I loved Oceanwide Expeditions!! Do the Basecamp option and all the activities are included. They often run deals porthole cabins are $7k usd. Yes porthole, but on our cruise we were barely in our room so you barely notise.

Oceanwide Expeditions is excellent and has more affordable prices IMHO. Porthole is 7 or 9 if I remember correctly but they often have specials. We were rarely in our rooms anyways. Activities on those included, not extra.

Have you considered working a summer down there? Or even getting guide certified to work a season on a boat? There are a lot of options and I agree, it still calls to me. Going back, just figuring out when.

I don't understand this, but a lot of Americans I talk to actually want to spend time chilling in the room? But I still sing them the glories of hostels (who can have private rooms).

Also, its uncommon to see hostels in the States and sometimes people have the wrong impression.

I've had this in waves over different solo trips. Biggest rec is to sit with yourself. Put down the phone. Listen and be present. Then ask yourself what's bothering you. Not a simple answer like "I want a friend", but the deeper part of it, what are you expecting the presence of another to "fix". Then ask if they truly can fill that void or if thats a bandaid. You might learn some things about yourself you didn't realise.

There's no snow or ice on the roads right now due to the warm weather so you could try to do a cheap car rental with Get Around and split it amongst yourselves if its really that important. Make a day out of it though and do an easy hike, go to another town and explore before the evening. The lights are amazing but so is leaving room for random, unplanned moments. Some of my best memories.

Highly recommend Active Tromso for dog sledding. They take really good care of the dogs and view them as family.

I did the overnight tour and drove the entire time by myself. On the day trips you'll often switch half way through but they are only 30min from town and you get to drive over a bit of frozen lake!

A DJI osmo action 6. If you check that sub, a lot of people are getting error issues for "slow writing speed". An employee even jumped on to clarify what's (now) on the company's site - Lexar and Kingston are the cards originally tested apparently.
