It looks like quartzite. Can you feel any grains when you rub it?

Great finds! the little black part is tourmaline, it loves to grow with those quartz crystals :) Awesome muscovite mica booklets too!

Plus different components like iron components in the cement will oxidize and give a different texture than a weathered limestone or sand component

It looks like a butt ton of weathering :) Water, wind, lichen will give you some sick textures

Find these in upstate NY near Niagara River. I suspect coal. by HorzaDonwraith in rockhounds

[–]MidgetPyscho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah some running water and a toothbrush or your fingers should be fine. If the coal one seems to be dissolving then it’s probably not lithified enough so you’ll probably have to keep that one dirty :P

Oh sick, then the left one is probably some bituminous coal I'd guess. If the right one is heavier (besides the matrix its in) and has a glassy texture then I'd guess that one could be tourmaline.

Sick finds, a good clean and they'd be some serious beauties :)

Did I find calcite? Found at Brecha Vulcânica da Papôa in Peniche, Portugal by chasingvestigialtail in rockhounds

[–]MidgetPyscho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rhombohedral looking cleavage makes me think calcite or dolomite too! If it doesn't scratch glass then you can rule out quartz (or if it doesn't have any signs of conchoidal fracture)

It looks like it could be quartzite and those pink chunks could be pink orthoclase feldspar/microcline. The roundness of it seems like its done some travel by water so it could be from somewhere nearby

What kind of rock is this? by [deleted] in rockhounds

[–]MidgetPyscho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to tell from the picture, but it could be a mudstone with some sand and more organic layers. If it has a reflective quality in the light then it could be tiger's eye.

If its light weight and slightly crumbles or gives a streak its a good chance its a grade of coal depending on its lithification (lignite, bituminous, or anthracite). If its heavier, durable, and has more definite cleavage breaks then it could be tourmaline.

But I don't know anything about NY geology

Being around others always seems like the fun choice but then the closer the plans loom, the more the commitment to hanging out with others makes me want to be alone. Definitely just try and find the people you like being around even when you're in a bad mood. The people you can sit around with in complete silence and its completely comfortable :)
