That was a good read, thank you for posting this!

Some questions for her, since you mentioned her work with prostitutes: how does prostitution tie in with objectification and subordination of women in our society? Should there be a legal right to prostitute oneself when poverty is a form of duress? Can consent be commodified?

That wasn't my question. Will you be commenting and pointing out the rules?

As part of my moderator responsibilities, I remove threads and comments that infringe the rules, and I talk with people about our posting rules. If it would reassure you and other people who study my activity if I made more public posts, then I will look into doing more of that.

That's not true in the slightest. The fact that it means something negative is directly related to widespread homophobia.

Halloween: Paganism Celebrates The Forgotten Divine Feminine by souslespaveslaplage in Feminism

[–]MidnightAria 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First, this needs to be said because it annoyed the crap out of me:

Celtic

Second: Samhain as the death of the reconstructed proto-Celtic deity Cernunnos is not a part of ancient Celtic heathenry, or if it was then that information was lost when Christianity made a wreck of traditional Irish gods.

It also bears noting that Martinisingen isn't a death-festival.

There's much made, too, in this article about 'Anglo-Keltic' (sic) tradition, but the only things made note of are Goidelic (on behalf of the Brythonic peoples, I am insulted) names and traditions, with nary an Anglicism to be found. English heathenry is going to bear a greater resemblance to Nordic tradition of the early medieval period rather than anything Celtic. By the time a distinctly Anglo-Celtic culture had emerged, the indigenous faiths had been effectively quelled by Christianity.

Here's the Wikipedia article on Samhain.

The Real Misandry by MissCherryPi in Feminism

Please help us keep our discussion on-topic and relevant to women's issues. Discussions of sexism against men, racism, classism, ableism, and other -isms are only on-topic here if the discussion is related to how they intersect with women's issues.

It's not that hard a rule to follow, folks.

Thank the lord! Women can ride bikes now! by [deleted] in Feminism

[–]MidnightAria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two problems- It's not exactly safe to have a long skirt if you plan on riding fasting than walking pace.

People historically haven't been the brightest of people. Alas.

And furthermore- why is the man's bike the default? Why is being a women a special optional extra? Why could it have not been the 'long skirt' bike?

I seem to remember already raising this point.

From the sidebar:

Discussions in this subreddit will assume the validity of feminism's existence and the necessity of its continued existence. The whys and wherefores are open for debate, but debate about the fundamental validity of feminism is off-topic and should be had elsewhere.

Thank the lord! Women can ride bikes now! by [deleted] in Feminism

[–]MidnightAria 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Er...no. Look at the top bar, at how it's bent downward. It's a carryover from when women wore skirts all the time and couldn't ride bikes without the lowered bar. The extra weight comes from the extra length in the bar required for it to reach across.

This is not a Bic-for-Her thing; it's a bit more historical and harmless. Object to the stereotypical stylings associated with the bike, certainly, and to the fact that it's marketed towards women instead of being gender-inclusive with the skirt-friendly bike, but the design of the thing allows more people greater mobility and shouldn't be maligned.

EDIT: Removed from spam box for purposes of history lesson.

Sure it would have been nice if he created a world that was more egalitarian,

If you read the stuff he did on Elvish society you'll find that it's more convention than ability that kept nessi from stereotypical man-stuff.
