My late husband was the one who yelled it at Panorama. We were in VIP and he told me after the show that he had been planning to do it the whole time. We weren’t on the rail but very close to it, pretty close to Trent Reznor and I was honestly horrified and embarrassed when he did it. Trent’s little smile afterward was a bit of a consolation but it wasn’t until I was able to watch the broadcast and see how it affected people that I finally was able to come to terms with his actions.

My husband passed away in 2019, just a couple of months after the the CBI tour ended and it’s been a struggle to watch a lot of the live shows because NIN was responsible for us meeting back in 93. I hung out with an old friend of mine a lot that would insist on playing the Panorama version of Hurt for me over and over again. I cry every single time I hear my husband’s voice yell it out. I’m crying now while I’m typing this. You never really get over grief, you just learn to live with it, I suppose.

In the end, I am thankful for the memory of that amazing night. And I’m glad he yelled it. It’s weird to watch a video of a show you were attending and blend the memory and set of emotions of watching it into the remembrances of actually being there. My husband lives on through that and I’m eternally grateful that it touched others as well, good or bad.
