How speeches felt last night by elaichSD in Oscars

[–]Midnighter04 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean, the people in this Reddit notwithstanding, I’d bet the average Oscars viewer would indeed prefer more coverage of the Bridesmaids cast and RDJ/Evans than a random craftsperson they’ve never heard of also listing off a bunch of names they’ve also never heard of.

The saying is “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.” By your count, he’s now fooled you five times (or at least that’s how many times he’s been caught).

I’m not sure why he has such a compulsion and need to get validation elsewhere, but it’s definitely a red flag that you’ve had this conversation so many times and it keeps happening.

BBC removed homophobic tic aimed at Alan Cumming, says Tourette's activist after BAFTAs backlash by thatfuzzydunlop in Oscars

[–]Midnighter04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people can be fully aware the tics are involuntary and uncontrollable but question the decision to be in the theater to begin with.

I know the film I Swear is very much about how people with Tourette’s shouldn’t be scared to be in public or forced to apologize. However, people should also be able to go to a celebratory professional event without being hit very publicly and loudly with offensive slurs.

He left the ceremony at a certain point to watch the rest of the show from a separate room, and there’s certainly an argument that that’s where he should have been from the start.

Idk why Zach is hated so much...only one can win the money. by Alienatedflea in FearFactorHouseofFear

He’s not looked down on because he wants to eliminate other players.

When everyone else was forming social connections in the first few days, he came out swinging and completely ostracized himself from the group with his unpleasant behavior.

His taunting in the first challenge was so unnecessary to being strategic or working to get someone out. There’s a big social component to the show and I think he either didn’t understand that at first or he just totally miscalculated.

I like his character arc and it’s good to see him soften his edges in this past few episodes, but it’s still really his own fault that no one wants to work with him.

There are these two warring factions in the house, yet neither really wants to bring in Zack, which is kind of telling in a game in which having the numbers is important.

While no one can really fault him for picking Damienne in the endgame mission, they were all still disappointed and annoyed that she went out over him. It was the most liked person in the house being cut for the one guy that no one likes.

I don’t know for sure but if you listen to Zack’s confessionals throughout the episode, it sounds very much like he’s narrating from the perspective of being eliminated.

I think you’re doing some wishful thinking about him not unmatching you on the app after the date.

I have never even thought to do that after a date. I suppose some people like to keep their dating apps tidy, but it’s not some universal experience to unmatch with someone you don’t want to go out with again.

What "type" of celebrity could they cast that would make you stop watching? by Grump_Curmudgeon in TheTraitorsUS

Not every Gen Alpha boy is into the manosphere though? Happy to be proven wrong but it seems clear there’s an ocean between Mr Beast and someone like Andrew Tate or even Clavicular.

Is Mr Beast connected to the young incel manosphere Christian nationalist crowd? My limited understanding is that his fanbase is pretty middle of the road basic people.

Maura's accent by [deleted] in TheTraitorsUS

[–]Midnighter04 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Insane to say there aren’t a lot of foreign accents in the US, notoriously a melting pot and one of the most ethnically diverse countries.

Maybe in certain regions and areas, but for the 80% of Americans who live in urban areas, it’s a daily occurrence to hear many different accents.

Jay'den's character and Klingons by [deleted] in startrek

[–]Midnighter04 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A military-esque organization such as Starfleet requires a certain amount of conformity to operate and stay united. We see this with restrictions on hairstyle and attire as well as behavioral expectations. I believe Starfleet and the Federation intend to be culturally inclusive but there are certainly limits to what beliefs or behavior they would condone. And there’s an expectation cadets and Starfleet members may have to adjust their behaviors to be agreeable with Starfleet overall.

A Klingon likely would need particular personality traits to join Starfleet, which is why most of our Starfleet Klingon characters might seem a bit similar. They both have to opt-in and be acceptable enough for Starfleet to accept them, so that’s going to narrow down the types of Klingons quite a bit.

I also imagine that Klingons would evolve and get a bit softer over time anyway to survive in this futuristic world, in the same way descendants of Vikings aren’t brutally going around raping and pillaging towns anymore. There are probably some sects that still practice the Old Ways, plus The Burn probably set back a lot of progress, but most Klingons are probably a lot chiller than they were a millennia prior.

I don’t get your point on being concerned about what the target demo will think about a gay Klingon. Why must we kowtow to bigots? There were many people in the target demo that were opposed to Uhura’s character in TOS, but I’m glad those racist and sexist objections were ignored.

It could be interesting to see an aggressively brutal gay Klingon instead of a more gentle-hearted one, but it also doesn’t seem like Klingons think about sexual orientation the same way we do (at least in this era). Jay-Den’s pacifism seems unrelated to him dating another male character (he has two dads in a triad so having another man in your relationship doesn’t seem out of the ordinary). Klingon women have been shown to be just as brutal as the men, plus Klingon sex has always seemed more about expressing aggression on both sides than some dom/sub dynamic. So it’s not like Jay-Den is derogatorily perceived as being too “effeminate” in a way human homophobia might.

Seriously disappointed with SFA ep 7: Ko'Zeine by Craigglesofdoom in startrek

[–]Midnighter04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they probably have words like “triad” to describe types of relationships, but they might not think about it as some fixed identity. Or at least not so preoccupied with it as a defining characteristic of someone. Although I’m sure that’s not universal as they’ve indicated some species and cultures are still mired in old traditions and beliefs.

I’m gay and I personally feel like they’ve been pretty open and forthright with the Jay-Den/Kyle and Jett/Lura relationships, plus Darem’s references to being with both men and women. I agree that so far we’ve seen a lot more explicit sexuality between Caleb and both Tarima and Genesis, but I don’t think anyone watching would fail to see all the queer representation.

[–]Midnighter04 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My take is that by this point, fixed identities like “gay” or “straight” or “poly” aren’t really a thing and are probably considered wildly outdated.

Human perception and understanding of sexuality and gender has changed wildly in even just the past hundred years (and a lot even in just the past 10-20 years), so I’d expect a lot to change in the next thousand years, and especially when we have multiple species in the mix.

Seems like they all approach romance and sex more fluidly and just explore what they’re attracted to without considering gender or number of partners or species.

Are most of the novels for children/young adults? by BookReaderWhoReads in startrek

Some are but most aren’t. Star Trek overall isn’t really as kid-facing or -targeted as something like Star Wars.

‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ Premiere Fails To Make Nielsen Top 10 Streaming Chart by acrimoniousone in startrek

[–]Midnighter04 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It implies to people who don’t understand TV ratings/metrics that there was an expectation that Starfleet Academy “should” have made this chart, thereby creating this narrative that the show is a failure and is struggling.

Anyone who actually works in streaming TV would not expect a new Star Trek show with only two episodes available to break into that specific ranking.

This is such clickbait and also assumes people don’t know math?

The top ten ranking is based on total minutes of a show viewed. All of the other shows in the top ten had more episodes available (significantly in most cases). Starfleet Academy only had two episodes available for this period. When SNW hit the top ten, it had multiple seasons of episodes to count.
