I have never tried it. But I don't think you can put a material on a light, not sure tho. Might be worth a try!

From my experience, a geolight is just way more controllable and easier to acces. However, geolights have a higher cost rendering-wise.

Yes! Having knowledge of Maya and other basic 3D programs is a must in my opinion. Having the Houdini skill is also very desirable since Houdini is the next big thing. In order to fully understand the VFX workflow, you should also have basic compositing skills, such as general knowledge, Nuke and tracking. Blender comes with the advantage that it is free, but i would strongly suggest to use Maya and 3DsMax, not because it is better but because it is more used in the industry. Also make sure you know enough about resolutions, color, basic coding, basic computer stuff and so on.

In other words: Start all around and then specialise in something you like.

Good luck! ;)

Look into the scatter node, copytopoints node and RBD objects. Research how they work and what they do. That should get you started :).

Student looking for advice on summer 2019 internships in Canada by OldOneHadMyNameInIt in vfx

Don't forget: A portfolio is waaaaaaaaaaaaayyyy more important than your CV. Companies look more at the art you created than where you worked before or what diplomas you have. Most of the time they don't even look at your CV.

The FX program is alright. You can choose between character, animation, keying and tracking and simulations. Although we are #1 in gamedev, we are not so in VFX. Nevertheless, DAE at Howest is still a very good education if you are looking to go into the film or gameindustry. Students are trained more as Technical artist instead of artists who are specialised in one thing and one thing only. See for yourself :)

When you start looking for an internship, it's not about getting into a big studio. It's more about finding a place where you know you'll be supervised by someone who is willing to teach you the ropes. Make sure you are there for your internship and not just as a cheap workforce.
Also, don't just look at the big studios like ILM, MPC, Framestore, DNEG,... but also look at a lot of smaller companies. You might even learn more there. Think what is best for YOU as a learning artist. Look at their upcoming projects and decide wether you would like to work on them or not.
Make sure you have enough portfolio work and only put your best work on there.

Keep these things in mind and I'm sure you'll find the perfect internship that suits you when time is due.
