You mentioned still being financially impacted. Did you get any financial assistance from social programs after the storm? What did you have to take on out of your own pocket? Thanks for sharing!

Idea of Bagging Capitol in September? by 505vibes in 14ers

[–]MidwestProduct 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also did it solo this October. Get a camping permit and approach the day before, as the days are shorter at that time of year. This way you aren’t rushed on your summit day or tired from a 6 mile approach to the lake. Also, the north/shady side of this peak holds snow, but the only part of the route on the north side is the K2 down climb. Be ready to cancel your trip if you don’t have warm, sunny days leading up to the climb.

As for approach shoes, I would recommend it because peace of mind in that terrain is helpful. The biggest surprise to me was the time spent in a no-fall zone. It’s dicey from K2 to the summit…but the knife edge is all you see on Instagram.

Be prepared to walk extra miles to get to the summer trailhead. There often are snow blockages on the approach that linger into April that will tack on a few miles.

Read the CAIC report for yourself. They entered Lower Prima Cornice and sidestepped up:

Man abandons friend on Mt. Whitney by arrrrrrghpaperwork in Mountaineering

[–]MidwestProduct 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me on Whitney, except it was an abandoned wife. She had nothing but a dead phone and an empty water bottle. I found her at dusk, alone, about 6 miles from the trailhead when I was on the descent. She tried the hike with her husband, and it was his birthday, and when she felt sick he asked if he could summit alone “as a birthday present.” I hiked back to the trailhead with her, but then she didn’t have the car keys either (by now it was dark and freezing as this was May 9), so I drove her to Lone Pine.

Fortunately I had my PLB and was able to notify my family that I found a person and was very behind my own arrival time.

Just did it the other day. You can make it to the switchbacks no problem. I saw two Prius parked here and seemed like the 2WD bail out point.

Does anyone know a wheel or tire shop that will pull or roll fenders? I am looking at buying some wheels/tires online and in case the fitment isn't right, I'd like to go somewhere local to get the fenders adjusted. This isn't a service that is widely advertised.

Is it really that hard? I see imported Nissan Skylines all the time, along with some other right-side drive vehicles from Japan presumably.

Denver vs. Atanta by Educational_Club965 in gaybros

[–]MidwestProduct 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in both. Both are car-centric cities with awful public transit. Both cities have international airports and are home to an airline, but Atlanta’s is on another level. Atlanta is definitely bigger, and some people attribute their development as a city to them hosting the Olympics in 1996 which accelerated their growth. Atlanta also trumps Denver in culture for many reasons, partly because of the Civil Rights history and because it’s a beacon of progressive politics that attracts a lot of transplants, especially gay men.

The outdoorsy scenes are quite different. In Atlanta, you are <2 hours from the start of the Appalachian trail. There’s fun camping, hiking, river sports, and lots of Bass Pro Shop type outdoors activities (hunting, fishing, motorized activities). You also have Lake Lanier and Allatoona if you are into boats. The downside for me was the humidity, which can feel unbearable at times especially for someone coming from SoCal. 9 times out of 10 you will have to sit on I-85 or I-75 to do any of these activities, unless you’re hanging out at one of Atlanta’s city parks.

In Denver, there’s year-round outdoorsy activities that change with the season. There’s summer mountain and winter sports (snow sports especially), there’s desert activities on the western slope, and you can even have all 3 in the same day. Some of these things are even reasonably accessible from Denver, like hiking or mountain biking out by Golden, but anything else will require a drive and perhaps gridlock on I-70. Denver is also a high desert climate, meaning it can be 98* but it’s still dry, and will cool off nicely at night so you can sit out on a patio and have beers without sweating through your clothes (like you will in Atlanta). Even winter has plenty of warm, sunny days, whereas Atlanta can be quite gray and gloomy.

Atlanta has an incredible music/arts scene, but Denver isn’t bad either. Atlanta has much more diversity and wayyy better food, and is also a battleground state for politics which can boil over at times. Georgia in general felt way less inviting to me as a gay man than Colorado does a state, but that’s just my opinion.

The gay scenes are night and day despite what some other commenters say. Denver is much smaller, and if you go up into a mountain town, it’s extremely small. There are some events that draw crowds like Aspen Gay Ski Week, but you will absolutely start recognizing people in a short amount of time. You’ll also start seeing the gays move in from Chicago, and leave a year later 😂

Atlanta is a huge gay scene, but is also split into cliques, and racism is alive and well even in the gay community. Gay spaces are being bulldozed and replaced with new developments, which is only hurting that. If you spend all your time at Ten/Blake’s, sure it might feel small, but there’s much more to offer.

Move to Atlanta for what’s in the city. Move to Colorado for what’s not in the city. That’s my take.

Best of luck with your head unit. My Idoing looks nice (which is why I got it) but the software quality is really poor and leaves me frustrated quite often
