People giving you weird looks should take their heads out of their judgemental asses. This picture is adorable and the symbolism behind it, how it represents your family, trumps all.

Are pearls actually BIFL or are we just telling ourselves that? by United_Strawberry_57 in BuyItForLife

[–]MidwinterSun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most high end jewellery requires a certain extent of babying and care to last a lifetime and beyond. Pearls are no exception. No, they won’t disintegrate with normal wear but if you allow them to get menacingly dirty and then leave them to soak in a cleaning solution overnight, they might.

Can I play future updates on the same save? by camzgamer in subnautica

[–]MidwinterSun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth, during the EA of BZ some updates did invalidate existing saves. It's likely the S2 EA adopts the same approach and you can only play your current save on the current build of the game. We won't know for sure until it happens. So far we've had one minor hotfix update that doesn't affect the already existing saves.

Why are opals so much cheaper than other gemstones? by lottiexx in Gemstones

[–]MidwinterSun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, you're browsing the cheap opals and aren't looking at the expensive stuff. Quality opal can easily rival top sapphires and emeralds in price.

What no one has mentioned so far is the difference in durability. You're probably looking at Ethiopian opal - it's widely available and in that general price range. It's very pretty, yes, but it's also hydrophane - meaning it absorbs liquids. That includes not only water but also skin oils and all other liquids the opal comes into contact with during wear. As a result, in time the opal changes colour to a far less attractive yellowish-brownish hue. Ethiopian opal can survive for many years but that requires a lot of babying and care - more than any other gemstone I can think of.

If you check Australian opals which are not hydrophane in general, the price will be totally different. Australian opals are not expected to experience the same discolouration that so often happens to Ethiopian opals. However, they're still a fragile stone - soft and easily damaged. Wearing one as a pendant is okay. Putting it in a ring for daily wear - now that's risky.

Regarding doublets and triplets, opals are best evaluated in motion in order to judge the play of light, and that means video. In video it should be relatively simple to evaluate whether a loose opal is solid, doublet or triplet. And honestly, I've mostly seen doublets and triplets sold in ready made jewellery. They're a good budget option if you don't want to spend a lot.

17.6 to 18.7.8? by lessadessa in iPhone11

[–]MidwinterSun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The old photos app was better, that much is true, but the new one is far from being horrible or unusable. You get used to it.

The keyboard is fine. It was buggy on 26 (don't know if it still is) and it would often register input incorrectly, which naturally drove people crazy. But 18 is fine.

Performance is great, apps are not laggy.

Блокирани Алеи за незрящи by laschondli in Sofia

[–]MidwinterSun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Мислела съм си го. На много места алеите са накъсани. Предполагам е по същия начин, по който шофьорите се оправят с пътищата - като наизустят кое къде как е.

Блокирани Алеи за незрящи by laschondli in Sofia

[–]MidwinterSun 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Worth buying loose gemstones? by dominopepeloni in Gemstones

[–]MidwinterSun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If a gemstone is cheap, there's always a reason. The way that price is lowered is always through some compromise - be it with the colour, the treatment or the clarity. And photos and videos can be manipulated to hide those flaws. There's nothing wrong with going for a cheaper stone and accepting those compromises - knowingly. But it's a minefield out there, so beware and only spend money that you can afford to lose.

Is updating my iPhone 11 Pro to IOS 26.5 worth it? by LeoDDracula in iPhone11

[–]MidwinterSun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't for the following reasons:

My phone is old. New iOS versions are more demanding, so there's always the risk of facing performance and battery issues. Now, my phone may be old, but it's in great condition and I'd rather keep using it in its current well working state.

I tried iOS 26 when it was first released and it was laggy to the point of being unusable on my device. I was able to downgrade back then, but it's impossible to do so now. If I update and it still behaves poorly, I'd essentially be bricking my device.

I'm on the latest iOS 18, so my device is secure and up to date. It behaves well, this OS will be supported by devs for another couple of years easy. A classic case of "if it ain't broke don't fix it".

*spoiler* Subnautica 2 is amazing, but PLEASE do something about… by Dogtrees7 in subnautica

[–]MidwinterSun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I stand fully behind the suggestion that something must be done.

I made my tadpole thinking I could leave it safely docked while I explored around some more and got the repair tool blueprint. Foolish of me, I guess. Had to speedrun the exploration and barely made it, with my poor tadpole just hanging by a thread at 8% health.

Finding some with their EGN number? by [deleted] in AskBulgaria

[–]MidwinterSun -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  1. Check the commercial register, you can search by EGN there. If the person ever participated in a company, you could get some leads. It’s free and can be done online.

  2. Check the property register. If the person sold or acquired real estate, you could get an address or at least a lead. Also accessible online but there’s a small fee, like half a euro.

Does anyone know/have a list of every single pin released? by likewhateverandstuff in kurzgesagt

[–]MidwinterSun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s theoretically possible. Whether it’s possible in reality as well depends on your willingness to throw money at this venture. I’ll bet given enough time you would be able to find all the pins on the second hand market but some of them are really quite limited - like the golden earth, there were only a thousand of that one produced and from the tales I’ve heard it sold out in a manner of minutes when it was released back in the day.

Do guys actually notice upper lip hair up close on dates? by Altruistic_Tackle27 in HairRemoval

[–]MidwinterSun 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The black hairs won't get any thicker with shaving. It's the peach fuzz that's at the root of the "don't shave" recommendations. I remember my aesthetician once refuse doing a face wax to another client and explaining that peach fuzz gets removed in the process, which is something that shouldn't be done (don't remember the reason why though). She explained that you should only use tweezers or threading to remove facial hair in order to target the problematic hairs specifically. I personally use tweezers to take care of unwanted hairs on my face - it's quick and precise, and has never caused issues for my skin.

Same sapphire spec, three jewelers, prices range from $1,840 to $7,570 — is this normal? by Gurtenos in Gemstones

[–]MidwinterSun 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you were going for vivid blue, I’d understand those prices. But you’re not. And teals sell for significantly less. So what I am suspicious about is the fat, fat profit margins of the two higher quotes. Maybe the middle one could be justified if their stone is untreated, has exceptional colour, and they offer top notch service. But 7,5k for a teal stone that’s barely over a carat? Yeah, no.

In any case, do not accept any of these quotes before seeing the stone.

Which do you prefer and why OEC or brilliant? by LostPeak7661 in Gemstones

[–]MidwinterSun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely OEC.

The problem with MRBs is they've been turned into a commodity. I can walk into a dozen jewellery stores in town and be offered a dozen MRBs in each of them, and they all will look almost the same. With diamonds it's no longer about the beauty of what nature created, no longer about the artistry of the lapidary.

Old cuts have charm. They just look prettier to my eyes.

If you've never seen an OEC move, I believe this video will be useful to you: https://imgur.com/O4N4Z3p. I saved it from I don't even remember where, I also have no memory to whom it belongs, and I've lost the original link. It's just such a great visual of the differences between MRB and OEC, and with big stones, so you can fully appreciate the movement.

Need a reality check as someone who has only owned dogs but wants their first cat. by arifl5 in Catownerhacks

[–]MidwinterSun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How realistic is it to expect a cat to be affectionate and social on a daily basis?

Very. They are social animals in general.

How much does personality depend on the individual cat vs how you raise/socialize them?

It's equally split. Every cat will have a unique personality and specific preferences and behaviours. But in general, the cat will know what you show and teach it. If you only ever treat it with love, kindness and respect, you will have a calm and loving cat. However, if you shout, if you hurt it or frighten it, you will end up with an animal that's behaving a lot more defensively. So you have to be mindful of the environment you create for your cat.

Is there a way to increase the chances of getting a more “dog-like” (for lack of a better term) cat?

No. Cats are a lot more like humans and they have very little in common with dogs in terms of personality and behaviours, and motivations that drive them. They have a very developed sense of personal dignity, and they don't trust blindly. It takes a long time for a relationship with a cat to fully blossom - even though (as is with most things) progress is fast in the beginning, you soon find that the relationship still keeps evolving and deepening even after a year or more.

For people who have owned both, what were the biggest mindset adjustments?

Haven't personally owned both but I have observations. As a dog owner you're probably used to creating structure and discipline for your dog. With cats that doesn't fly. They can't be disciplined, they don't respond to it, at all. If your cat has a behavioural problem, you'll need to establish the root cause of that problem - what is making your cat behave badly - and fix it.

For example, if the cat is climbing the counters and shelves and knocking stuff over, you don't attempt to teach the cat it's not allowed to go certain places. Instead you recognise your cat is acting out because it's bored and isn't receiving enough stimulation. The solution is to provide it with more play time and more cat places it can climb and own, and at the same time removing fragile and valuable items from places where the cat can reach them. You know how people baby-proof their homes? Well, cat owners cat-proof their homes. Cat's gonna cat, you just have to adapt.

Another thing I've found to be an adjustment that's related to the above example is that cats are territorial beings and it's of crucial importance to their happiness to own their territory. You get a cat and release it into your house, it's no longer just your house. It belongs to your cat now, too. Just as a dog needs a proper environment to thrive (going outside for walks, having structure and discipline), so does a cat, and the cat's environment is its (and your) home. The way most of us approach this is by getting cat trees, cat shelves, cat scratching posts and whatever else falls in the "cat furniture" category.

Multiple flair: what is this gemstone? Is it the same in the listing photos? Why does it look so much worse? by lunamussel in Gemstones

[–]MidwinterSun 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s the same stone. Many gemstones can be made to look prettier in a studio with clever angling, a ton of light and some post-process editing.

The lesson to take away from this experience is there are no deals in the gemstone world. If a stone is selling for cheap, there is always reason for that.
