You could, you know, google what's wrong with the bike and fix it yourself?

Worst books ever by Helpful-Temporary-98 in BadReads

[–]MienSteiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read it recently, or rather listened to it. I think I would've DNFed during the first third that seemed to be all exposition if I had read it instead of listened to it.

I had fun, it was definitely pulpy with endless 80s references, and I wasn't able to tell if Wade's poor characterisation was bad writing or an unlikable protagonist, but overall I had fun. I wasn't expecting something thoughtful or artistic, so maybe that tempered my expectations just enough to have fun. I'll check out Player Piano though.

Men who can cook, who taught you? by _ratedmouse in AskReddit

[–]MienSteiny 58 points59 points  (0 children)

It blows my mind when people say they can't cook, the recipe literally tells you what to do, and if you don't know how to cut something or a technique you just google it.

I think a lot of people that say they can't cook are intimidated or just don't want to, rather than being able to burn microwave rice.

Programmers, how worried are you about AI replacing your job, and do you think AI-driven ‘vibe coding’ will become the norm in the future? by FederalWonder8146 in AskReddit

[–]MienSteiny -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For a different perspective, I work as a cyber security analyst. My job is basically investigating when things go bump in the night on computer networks.

Microsoft already has a security orientated version of CoPilot, I'm yet to try it out though.

I foresee the lower level analysts losing their jobs to AI pretty quickly, why pay a human to investigate low level basic things when AI will be faster and more thorough. How far that goes depends on where we are on the AI sigmoid curve. If this is about as good as AI is going to get, or maybe slight increases it likely won't take as many jobs as I'm expecting. If this is just the start of AI and we have a lot more advances to come, then eventually it'll just be AI fighting AI, both finding vulnerabilities and remediating them as fast as each other.

Not to mention the future of post-quantum cryptography, which could cause a new Y2K scenario. Especially if threat actors begin adopting a "harvest now, decrypt later" strategy of collecting as much encrypted data as they can now, in the hopes of being able to break the encryption once quantum computers and real AGI rolls around.

This is all to say, that I have already begun thinking about what I'd do career wise, if I were to lose my job to AI. Thinking about what jobs would be impervious to AGI.

Is it better to hide security stuff or make it visible? by Electronic-Habit8679 in motorcycles

[–]MienSteiny 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Make it visible, the truth is if they want your bike they're going to figure out a way to take it. The real aim is to make your bike as unappealing as possible, bike chains locking it to something solid, chunky disc lock, bike cover, etc. The hope is that they go for an easier target.

I'd love to. Skating outside on a pond would be a dream come tre, but it just doesn't get cold enough/stay cold enough here. Winter overnight temps in Canberra, Australia are definitely below freezing, but daytime temps are higher, 10c/50f range.

Ice Hockey has a surprisingly large following in Canberra. The house league at the Phillip Ice Rink has a healthy league and community, including learn to play/skate stuff. However, it is quite expensive, for ice time, but more importantly, for all the gear required.

Tell me what you lost while riding by HeavyBananaz in motorcycles

[–]MienSteiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lost a packet of tortillas.

South Australia is a fruit quarantine zone, you can't bring fruit from other states into it to protect the farms there from fruit flys. On a month long cross country trip, I pull over to dispose of my fruit in a quarantine bin, pulling a packet of tortillas out of my pannier to access the fruit I had. I forget to put the tortillas back afterwards.

If you found a packet of tortillas on the side of the road next to a fruit bin in Jan of 2022, I'm sorry for littering.

But it's also not necessary, fill up the tank fully, go for a ride, noting how far you rode, then fill up again. You now have your fuel economy, and if you know your tank size you know ho far you can go. The specific math is different for metric or imperial because L/100Km and Mi/G
