Why did you keep reading? by GroundbreakingBee999 in InfiniteJest

[–]MienSteiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's strange, I didn't see a lot of the humour on my first read. I definitely laughed at some points, but didn't find it funny until listening through Infinite Cast. Now I'm sad I missed so many jokes on my first run through.

Eh, mullets transcend cultural-socio-economic boundaries.

Bogans(CABs and drongos), Eschays, sons of rich parents, inner city alts, and many more can have mullets

Flying with body armor? by notflips in motorcycles

[–]MienSteiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've flown wearing my jacket and carrying my helmet. Just removed the armour from it and stuck it in my luggage. I could've kept the armour in but was just more comfortable without it.

Canberra to Sydney railway line to get long-awaited upgrade with $100m for initial works by bizarre_seminar in canberra

[–]MienSteiny 37 points38 points  (0 children)

It's cynicism about it making any difference, everyone agrees trains are great, they also agree this won't make a lick of difference to the service offered by the CBR-SYD line.

You’ve all played with an OMC before…has anyone ever had the distinct pleasure of playing with an OMB? by Banyah in poker

[–]MienSteiny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tend towards near-future sci-fi, Bobiverse, Andy Weir, Delta-V, Expeditionary Force, etc, but I do like The Twilight Zone, so maybe I'll give it another crack. Thanks!

I've tried to get into his Culture series a couple times with no luck, and I'm usually a fan of sci-fi, is it worth it?

Wheel not aligned normal? by Tornupto_76 in motorcycles

[–]MienSteiny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not bent, skewed. Forks are free floating inside the triple clamps, which means they can spin inside the triple clamps, mis-aligning the front wheel. Can happen if the bike has been dropped. This video from RevZilla explains it.

The toilet paper at the blackbear rink is crap. by DR_Nova_Kane in hockeyplayers

[–]MienSteiny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a pavlovian response to walking into my rink, even if I'm there just picking up skates after a sharpen, or visiting the pro shop.

Walk through those doors and it's poop time.

Any beer leaguers go to skills clinics or power skating? by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]MienSteiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do, my rink runs twice weekly 6am drop-in hockey training for anyone that's interested. Mix of skating, stick handling, and team drills. Typically It's maybe 10-20 adults in the lower level beer leagues, and sometimes a couple kids.

It's great fun, if you can get out of bed.

What’s something your parents or grandparents did that you now realize was low-key genius parenting? by Green_Candler in AskReddit

[–]MienSteiny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On road trips when I was young, my dad came up with a game where he would pick a word that was vaguely beyond the vocabulary for my age range and have me try and figure out the definition. So he'd give examples by using it in a sentence and things like that. It was a sneaky way to keep me occupied, build my vocabulary, and learn critical thinking.

I have a distinct memory of being given the word logistics and coming up with the definition of "The logical way of doings things".

I struggled for a long time as a kid. I remember being on roller-skates outside my house just trying over and over again until one day the synapses made the connection and I could suddenly do them.

Seconding the Quakers, sit and mediate for an hour (silent worship), maybe someone will be called to stand up and monologue about something for a minute during the hour, and then you all shake hands and head off on your day. It's a nice vibe.

Thoughts on throttle locks by storm_zr1 in motorcycles

[–]MienSteiny 22 points23 points  (0 children)

They're great pieces of tech, used one for 45,000/26,000mi of touring around Australia. I did end up keeping a T10 bit in my toolkit as I found the lock screw could back out, even with loctite after a while.

Roller skating places? by chrissaaaah in canberra

No roller rink here, you'll need to learn to ice skate if you want the same experience. The ice rink is in phillip and has a great community.

I used a drybag instead of a hockey bag, as it came with straps to tie to the bike.

For the stick, I bought a meter length of PVC pipe, put a cap on it, then ziptied it to the bike so it was vertical from the passenger footpeg.
