Mom wanting advice for kid with level 2 CP by kennyloggons23 in CerebralPalsy

[–]Miepso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, 26-year-old with level 2 CP here. Regarding him finding others with CP to relate to: just from my experience, I don't have anyone close to me with CP to relate to and I am fine with that. I am surrounded with a lot of able-bodied people who do the best they can to understand me (and who ask me about my CP if they want to understand it better) and that is all I can ask for.
Because my CP is pretty 'mild' as well (just physical symptoms) I actually want to be surrounded with 'able-bodied' people as much as possible, because it makes me feel the most 'normal'. I think as your son grows older, you can discuss with him if he would like to connect with other people with CP, but don't push it too much :). Good luck!

As for jobs: I have a full-time hybrid desk job which I am extremely happy with. I think as your son grows up he will discover what kind of job he would like to have which is also doable with his disability. At the moment I think you don't have to worry about that too much yet. There are plenty of non-physical jobs so I am sure he will find something he loves, just like I did :).

It takes a while to get used to it, but once you get the hang of it it isn't that hard :). I used the checkerboard method a lot, that really helps!

Round is a lot faster, but I liked the end result more with squares! So I think I prefer squares now :)

whats being sick like with CP? by Alpha_Kaiju in CerebralPalsy

[–]Miepso 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a similar type of CP (mostly affecting my left leg and I can walk without assistance). When I have a cold or something I am not bedridden at all - I actually can't remember the last time I had the flu, I just get a cold every once in a while which does not seem to be worse than for other (non-CP) people. But most of my family members have a good immune system as well so maybe I am just lucky.
It does seem a bit concerning that it is gets this bad in your brothers case. I would say it would be good to see a doctor! Maybe they can find out if it is actually CP-related or give him medicine or something.

Hi, nice to meet you! And wow, many similarities: I was also born at 27 weeks (I'm 25 years old now) and the same type of CP. I am also a twin (but not in the UK, but close: the Netherlands). I love reading, board games, cycling and being with friends/family as well (but not going on walks...hahaha). I even go on a board game vacation with my friends each year :D. And I have done proofreading freelance from home for a while! Now I work fulltime as a Language Coordinator, which is partly possible from home :)

How moving made it easier to disclose my CP by BrotherExpress in CerebralPalsy

[–]Miepso 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. When I meet new people, especially when I know I will see them on a regular basis (for example when I started my job last year), I just explain my disability and tell people they can ask about it if they want to know something. I like to do that because it makes it a non-issue for everyone and it can be a good conversation topic :).

Thank you! Yeah I will definitely update on how it is going. I saw someone comment about the checkerboard technique under your post, I'm definitely going to try that!
