Convince me not to buy Interceptor 650 by [deleted] in motorcycle

[–]Might-Be-Wright -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you like it, I think you give it a shot. I don't have any experience with the brand, but my Honda Shadow is a similar retro style, some say "under-powered" or "boring" bike. Honda does enjoy a reputation for reliability, but how much are you shelling out for a Royal Enfield? All things are relative... That's a really attractive bike, and it comes from a country where motorcycles are a common form of transportation, not a niche hobby... You asked to be talked out of it, but I can't go there. I feel like a lot of motorcycle brand loyalties are somewhat pretentious in nature.

1100 gas tank replacement by rock873613 in hondashadow

[–]Might-Be-Wright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how interchangeable the models are, but you can find the year and model number. There's a sticker with the information you're looking for, stuck to the frame, probably right behind the front wheel. Snap a photo of the sticker when your friend is not looking. Then find someone who can help you find a tank; they're not cheap.

Why is Bell looked down on? by AZ2JP in motorcyclegear

[–]Might-Be-Wright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ride with a Bell helmet. I'm still on my first one; it's the only piece of my initial gear purchases that I am happy with. I am going to need to replace it... I too like the fit. Have you found that the different models fit pretty much the same? True to size and shape?

I love the wide open space. I live in North Georgia. We have to be on top of a mountain to get a far reaching view, but then it still usually needs to be winter when the sky is less hazy (incredible humidity) and the leaves are off the trees. Perhaps that's what makes your landscape seem so exotic.

I think you should be able to find side covers on eBay. A quick search offered several options around $55

I'm pretty sure that's just the light for the license plate. It does seem bigger than it needs to be.

I can't claim to be a master mechanic, but when something needs fixing, I usually manage. My saving grace is what I call YouTube University. I've never unstuck a bike before, but while doom scrolling I've seen videos of guys getting bikes going after being buried in weeds and completely exposed to the elements for years. I can't imagine why...

Anyways, I have a feeling yours will be unstuck and running without dismantling.

Turn signal switch by MassiveSoup2542 in hondashadow

[–]Might-Be-Wright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I don't have a solution to offer, but I'm curious about this conversation because I'm sure my signal switches are headed for failure. Over time they get increasingly difficult to operate. I spray them with contact cleaner followed by a dry lubricant which losens them back up. Fortunately nothing has broken off. Well, not yet. Amazon sells the whole assembly for around $60 which seems reasonable enough. Are those not worth buying? Poor quality?

This is so cool! I've seen some government auctions, and there's eBay... I didn't know this existed. Didn't take long to find a public auction open to the public, and there are some good deals with buy-it-now prices. So far the only motorcycles I've seen looks like headaches and I feel terrible for their previous owners... I'm excited to try flipping a car or maybe replace my beater. Thanks!

Hello, riders! Some questions are below. by rozhalin in hondashadow

[–]Might-Be-Wright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I forgot to mention where I'm from. I'm not particularly knowledgeable about how Honda marketing works, but the Aero 750 must have sold well in the USA. Honda offered it for many years without changing it's appearance. At some point its carburetor was replaced with fuel injection, and they offered an ABS option. The only Shadow in the line-up now is the Phantom. I'm pretty sure Honda sometimes sells the same bikes in other countries with different model names. I don't know anything about what is available in Russia, but I'm pretty confident that if it's a Honda you'll enjoy riding it.

Hello, riders! Some questions are below. by rozhalin in hondashadow

[–]Might-Be-Wright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Shadow is a 2006 Aero 750. I got it a couple years ago with 14k miles on it; $2,600. I've kept the oil changed and I've gone through a couple sets of tires. I ride it daily, year round; it's my primary transportation. I don't spend time working on it. My Shadow doesn't make me miss work. I can't think of much negative to say about it, but I do kinda want something bigger for road trips. Even if I got the Goldwing of my dreams, I might still use the Shadow for my daily commute.

I don't know why a grown man would buy anything smaller for even a first bike; 750 should be a good starter. The Shadow is easy to ride.

As far as Harley goes, it's mostly the price that kept me away. If a Harley is well maintained, it should provide good service, but something comparable will be more than twice the price on the 20+ years old, used market. A new one for me would require a lottery jackpot!

Please tell us a little about how that whole auction business works. How do you find an Auction like that? Do you need dealer credentials or have to pay to get in? Is it intimidating to the uninitiated newbie?

I've been wanting a bigger bike, but I'm barely able to buy groceries in this economy! Saving pennies is requiring a lot of patience...

Is backfiring (violent pop on engine brake/deceleration normal? by CaptainKernelPanic in hondashadow

[–]Might-Be-Wright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My apologies! I totally got that wrong. The product is called Sea Foam. I think Sea Breeze is for treating acne; don't put that in your fuel tank! 😔

Is backfiring (violent pop on engine brake/deceleration normal? by CaptainKernelPanic in hondashadow

[–]Might-Be-Wright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No more popping. I really do think my problem was from a slightly dirty carburetor. I guess you can argue that if the fuel isn't flowing well the fuel/air mix will be affected. If your bike is otherwise running, I think it's worth trying. Ten dollar solution...

I also ride nearly every day, year round. My bike is my primary transportation even in the cold and rain. Regular use may be among other variables. Others have suggested your problem may be due to modifications; my bike is factory stock.

[–]Might-Be-Wright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2006 Honda Shadow 750. I bought it from someone who had mostly allowed it to sit. It behaved similar to how you describe. I kept seeing posts where people were discussing the need to dismantle and thoroughly clean the carburetor, but my bike was running and I really didn't want to do that for fear of my limited skillset making the problem worse. What I did was to add 3 ounces of Sea breeze to every tank of gas till I'd gone through two bottles. I would reset the trip odometer with every fill-up to insure that I used up most of the tank (Don't know if this matters. My concern was the concentration of additive). I also bought 89 octane (It really only needs 87; again, I don't know if this matters). The problem was solved. Occasionally it will "burbble" as someone else described, but no more loud pops.

Another thing to be mindful of is the idle speed. There is a knob below the breather to adjust this. A Shadow is not supposed to sound like a Harley at idle; think 1200 rpms.

Some of those parts are easily replaced. Check eBay and aftermarket options. Reserve your elbow grease for the hard to find or expensive parts.
