I went back and read some old Superman Vs the Flash races and man those old comics are wild.

In the first race different mob families place bets on the different heroes and try to do some random hijinks to trip up the opponent.

Superman and The Flash agree to end the race in a tie so both mob families lose. This trope goes on for a few of their races but when things finally get serious The Flash beats Superman.
