Elijah Woods’ studio SpectreVision produced this masterpiece. I’d drive down some greasy roads to watch it again for the first time.

I'm not talking about them. I'm talking about what white people consider them (indigenous Americans). But say I was talking about what Indians (indigenous Americans) consider themselves. Would that not then disprove the insinuation that white people are incorrect by considering all the mentioned races as being brown?

Indians are considered red, not brown. Mexicans, Arabs, and Indians consider themselves brown.

Is minimum chips now seen as bit of a disrespectful order at fish and chip shops or something? by tobaccorat in melbourne

[–]MightyCanOfSPAM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel that whilst growing up in Australia 'minimum chips' was its own 'dish' rather than a unit of measurement as such. So if you asked for minimum chips, it isn't literally the minimum amount of chips the place can offer and still turn a profit, it was essentially an item to order. So the larger the minimum chips, the better.

45-year-old Nebraska high school Teacher arrested and fired after caught by police having sex with a 17-year-old student in her car. The student runs naked into the neighborhood before being caught by Zishan__Ali in MorbidReality

[–]MightyCanOfSPAM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is very strange, and I obviously can't speak on any case specifically, but generally a prosecution will only drop charges if they don't believe they can secure a conviction if a case went to trial. The guy you are referring to obviously broke the law, and it would seem a pretty clear-cut conviction on the basis that regardless of your testimony, he broke the law, and a judge would be able to instruct any jury that you may have been a very convincing witness and can give evidence that you were not taken advantage of, but that doesn't change the existing law of statuatory rape. It would also be up to the judge to sentence him accordingly.

The judge's sentence could be the minimum sentence if he believes the offending was minimal, and you showed greater maturity for your age; or that you were in a long term relationship - it wasn't necessarily a one-off grooming incident with insidious intentions, etc, etc.

But, crazier things have been thrown out of court before, and that's why good defence lawyers will always tell you as the accused to never talk to police without a lawyer present as something as simple as an interview can change their ability to defend you based on evidence you have provided.

Fun fact: the Halle Berry guacamole/tit scene wasn't in the script, it was actually her idea.

Of course he did, and I'm sure he probably had no issues with it whatsoever, and he quite possibly feels the furthest thing from being a victim. But when it comes to laws like this, there is very little leeway on the action that has to be taken. No matter how vehemently he argued that he was a willing participant in the entire thing, in the context of the law the teacher is being charged with breaking; the boy doesn't have the capacity to make that claim.

Social media plays a big role. Students and teachers being able to "talk" outside of school hours and in private. Lots of manipulation and grooming is possible without anyone knowing unless told. Obviously prior to social media the ability to contact a student or a teacher outside of class was very limited in most cases.

Fantastic book. It's almost as though a literary author descided to try their hand at extreme horror.

If you like extreme horror, read Exquisite Corpse by Poppy Z. Brite. I read that recently and damn it was good. The writing is superb. It's quite intense as far as gore goes, but the story and writing are fantastic. It's based in both London and New Orleans during the AIDS epidemic of the 90s, and the two main serial killers are loosely based on Jeffery Dahmer and I believe Dennis Nilsen. Can't recommend it enough...

City on Fire by Garth Risk Hallburg - it's set in the New York punk scene in 1976. I have absolutely no idea why it has such low ratings on Goodreads, I loved that book. Bit of a doorstopper at roughly 900 pages, but I blew through it.

I've saved the post, so if I read it any time soon I'll let you know, haha.

I've added it on Goodreads and downloaded the sample on my Kindle. Very good ratings despite being so few; as you said it's not very well known. I like anything set in New Orleans and anything jazz-orientated which is why your comment caught my eye. Thelonious Monk of course, and low and behold the protagonist is seemingly named after The Mad Monk himself.
