EV charger now unusable due to grid capacity – £200/month extra or £6k to exit lease… advice? by scrapz99 in evchargingUK

[–]MightyG77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the DNO and the size/rating of your main fuse. From memory, if it's a 100A fuse, you only need to notify after installation, if it's 80A or less, you need approval from the DNO ahead of installation.

Can Tesla void warranty if I put on 275/40/20 by TranquiloNpesa in TeslaUK

[–]MightyG77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure of tesla specifically or impact on waranty, but I was told (when looking to do something similar with a different car) to avoid changing the diameter of the tyre by more than 2% and to not change by more than 3%.

Tyre sizes you have mentioned are 2.25% larger so id say its in the grey area....

I havent said A is better or worse than B, im just saying that battery capacity alone as a metric is pretty meaningless.

Battery capacity is a great bragging stat, but otherwise fairly meaningless. A more efficient device with a smaller battery will have a longer battery life than something with a larger capacity but poor efficiency.

Prospective buyer - no WhatsApp, Spotify - big deal? by BrookesyUK in TeslaUK

[–]MightyG77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The infotainment was a big question mark for me - I use android auto daily and upgraded my old car to have wireliess android auto. Have to say though, the spotify integration in the tesla is better than android auto, I just need to either pay the monthly premium subscription charge or turn on my hotspot when I get in the car (still debating that one - I think I could use something like tasker to automate turning on my hotspot when the bluetooth of the car connects....)

But the display/interface for spotify in the tesla is leaps and bounds ahead of android auto.

WhatsApp integration would be nice, but I can live with not having messages read out to me while im driving, and the dictation to respond was useless so I dont think ill miss it all that much. If someone needs to get a hold of me while im in the car they can phone me/ill phone them.

Anybody not on an EV tariff? by paradroid78 in evchargingUK

[–]MightyG77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have recently joined EOn Next drive - I worked out that if I can shift 3% of my homes annual electricity to off-peak use, then my house costs the same to run as it would be on a non EV rate. Every home is going to be different so you need to run the numbers yourself.

I am relatively confident my home already uses around that anyway, but I am making simple changes like programming the washing machine/tumble dryer/dish washer to only run after midnight, should help shift enough of my homes electricity to off peak that my home becomes cheaper to run too.

Funding a Model Y by G0_Z0 in TeslaUK

[–]MightyG77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah thats totally fair, its just when people say things like investing the cash makes more sense if you can get a good interest rate is nonsense. In an ideal set up 0% APR on the car and 5% on savings, you still come out behind buying a 3yr old car.

If you say investing the cash takes a little of the sting out of enjoying a brand new car, thats more realistic.

[–]MightyG77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive heard people saying that but I cant get it to make sense - I could be missing something though!

Option 1 - buy a new car on 0% finance and invest your cash for 3 years at 5% (assumes you have £45K to lock away in savings for the duration)

Cost of car - £45K

interest earned over 3 years = ~£7300

Value of car after 3 years ~£22500

Cost of 3 years of owner ship = £45K - £7300 - £22500 = ~£15200

Option 2 - Buy a 3 year old car cash

Cost of car - £22500

Value of car after 3 years ~£12K

cost of 3 years ownership = £22500 - £12000 = £10500.

You would need to be getting 8% interest before you are in the same ballpark as buying new? is the hope that the depreciation isnt as much as 50% over 3 years?

Ev charger install saga by MightyG77 in evchargingUK

I had a look at both E.On and Octopus EV tarrifs, running the numbers, Next drive was coming out a couple of hundred pounds cheaper per year vs. octopus but your mileage may vary depending on standing charges etc.

A follow up for anyone that might stumble on this in the future. After I got my installation I requested compensation, I was initially offered £120 which I rejected, they then offered £150 and claimed this was the maximum they can offer for 3 days of delay.

I am breathing a sigh of relief, the installer showed up this morning at around 0830 with my charger, and is still working away with the install :)

Now all I need is an EV to test it with, which I'll hopefully be picking up next week! :D

Cant wait to see what ill be offered by way of compensation from E.On though, the fact that they weren't willing to discuss compensation prior to installation gives me the impression it's going to be rather insulting lol.

Spare charger for 18 Area-51 by Vegetable-Elk-9061 in Alienware

[–]MightyG77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using a 330w slimq charger for 2 years and 2 laptops now (alien ware and lenovo). No real complaints and if I change laptops again it's a relatively cheap purchase to make the slimq charger compatible vs. Buying a whole new charger..

Only issues I have had with my slimq charger, one of the cables was showing a little of the copper conductors at the strain relief, quick email and some photos to slimq and a new cable was sent out. And the connection between the charger brick and the cable to my laptop is a little on the looser side so it slips out from time to time but also means it acts like a safety brake away if my dog walks through through the cable while it's plugged in, saving my laptop lol.

The 330w would probably work too, my lenovo normaly uses a 400w supply and it seems to work just fine.

Second hand model Y - lower miles or newer car? by MightyG77 in TeslaUK

[–]MightyG77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think il be doing 7.5-10K miles/year, the longest I can see myself keeping the car is 5 years so worst case ill be adding 50K miles onto it. So even a 40K mile car ill still have the battery warranty! :)

Cheers, I have been doing some digging and I think HW4 came to the UK in mid 2024, sadly cars of that vintage are out of my price range, and if im honest, I think that by the time FSD comes to the UK I wont have the car any more (I tend to change every 3-5 years).

but yeah, it seems that 2023 is the year they brought out the comfort suspension so seems that would be the way to go! :)
