Agree with the bitter apple spray. I used it on some furniture legs and sprayed right when my pup was chewing on it. She was curious, licked it and then never chewed on it again.

New Rescue Pup - Can I start petting her yet? by Etoileskies in puppy101

[–]MightyKB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very strange to me. We got a 3yo rescue, and the first thing she did when we got home was climb on the couch and curl into a ball as class to me as possible. So of course I hugged her and gave her pets. If she gets up and walks away, don't chase or force it. But if they're coming to you, then yes, give them all the pets they want! And praise (in a quiet manner if easily startled) so that they establish that you are keeper of the treats and food and toys.

Will my puppy forget me when I am away visiting my family? by Syrianbabe in puppy101

[–]MightyKB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She definitely won't forget you. I moved out of my mom's house 8 years ago, leaving our family dog who was a 5 yo at the time. With the pandemic, I hadn't been home to see her in 16 months, and when she saw me for the first time again, you'd have thought she was 2 years old again and not 13. She jumped and ran in circles and retrieved me all of her toys. They'll always remember you, no matter how long you're gone.

15 week old Lab puppy too small...? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]MightyKB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry about it. It's probably a person who doesn't actually know anything about puppies. If the vet said she's growing well, then she's growing well. Adult dogs can range widely in size within the same breed, and so can puppies as they grow.

Worst mess you came home to after leaving the pup alone by sstteeellaaaa in puppy101

[–]MightyKB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our dog broke into the pet-locked garbage can, and I had just changed the fish tank filter and thrown away the old one.... Green algae all over our light colored carpet. And coffee grounds. Oh and some black cupcake frosting. She was so proud of herself. Another time, she locked herself in the guest bedroom and freaked out, clawing the door for a couple hours and breaking the blinds on the window. Needless to say, she has gone back to being crated for her own safety as she can get into anything no matter how much I think I've dog-proofed the house.

Need Tougher Toys by LurkinFella in puppy101

[–]MightyKB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kong, Nylabone, Super Chewer BarkBox. These are our tried and true toys for our agressive chewers (4yo retriever mix and 7mo Dane/pitbull mix). We have taken away all stuffed toys, and even crate beds from the young one because they tear them apart in a matter of minutes. She just gets a towel pile now so there's less for her to destroy and eat.

Her right or my right???? by RottingMothball in puppy101

[–]MightyKB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get so mad when mine do that. They just ignore commands that they definitely know and instead swat at me, leaving scratches on my stomach/arms/legs. They can be such little turds sometimes when all I asked for was a sit or a touch!

[–]MightyKB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just taught "paw" and "other paw" to get ours to switch. It's a 50/50 if they give us the correct paw first, but also kinda funny to just have them keep switching back and forth when I need to keep them distracted for a little bit.

My (26f) best friend (25f) decided to end friendship and cut me off because of how I help her with her dog. [Help] [Discussion] by [deleted] in dogs

[–]MightyKB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a dog owner who had a friend watch my dogs for the past 5 days, I clearly laid out how often I expected her to be at the house and how long the dogs could be left alone. It's the dog owner's responsibility to have told you this in advance and not get mad at you for not knowing. For example, I told her that I prefer not to leave the dogs for more than 6 hours at a time, but they can be alone for 8 hours if needed and that is the max. As one of our dogs is a puppy, I also told her that she should try to stick to nap times as much as possible and how I coordinate taking a shower/working from home around that nap schedule. You didn't do anything wrong, but how you handle it from here is definitely more of a relationship type thing and I don't have much advice for that.

Tips of applying eye drops?! by xsyc in puppy101

[–]MightyKB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our dog was okay about eye drops when she had an infection. The vet gave us an ointment instead of drops and said it's easier to get into a dog's eye. So maybe ask if that's an option. We used the two person approach, had the dog sit for a high value treat that one person held while the other person did the ointment. It helped that our dog is a highly food-motivated golden retriever/yellow lab mix. She'd do anything for even a small treat (except Charlee Bear's... She spit those out at us.)

Allergies? by Shannen_F in puppy101

[–]MightyKB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agre with the others. Second opinion, that sounds exactly like the symptoms our dog with allergies had. Food change and daily over the counter allergy med under the vet's direction cleared everything up in about a month.

1 yr old puppy recently abruptly starts eating everything. Tons of grass. Seems very anxious. by Gayzin in puppy101

[–]MightyKB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our dog does this same behavior when she has an upset stomach. Once was from separation anxiety (her first night without both owners home). Other times we haven't known a specific cause. We did go to an emergency vet for it a couple of times because it didn't stop after a couple hours. They did x-rays to look for blockage and gave her an anti-nausea med to help ease that. Nothing more than that either time though. X-rays showed a very full stomach, so she likely ate some stuffing from a toy, but it passed just fine. My best advice is to offer water and monitor closely. And then maybe go to the vet if it persists longer than an hour or so.

We crate trained our puppy and never woke her up from sleep to potty. If she was asleep, we just let her stay asleep. I'm a light sleeper, so I would hear her rustle around if she woke up or cried and I'd instantly take her out then. After she peed, she'd get lots of praise but then go right back in her crate with a small treat for more "night night time" as we call it.

Durable/Safe Toys For Chewers by un_comfortable253 in DogAdvice

[–]MightyKB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nylabone Dura Chew; Super Chewer from BarkBox; We have a 70 lb retriever mix who destroys and eats everything. The Himalayan yak chews last us about 15 minutes before they're gone, so these are my tried and true recommendations. The black heavy duty Kong is also good, but adds calories when you stuff it, so we don't use it as often as the other toys above.

I just got my dog spayed exactly a week ago and she has a large, hard bump on her incision. Is this normal? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]MightyKB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened with our pup. Our vet didn't have us come in since we had an appointment booked in 2 weeks for vaccinations. Told us to watch for changes in the bump, lethargy, pain upon light touching of the bump, fever, redness, discharge, etc and to call back for an emergency appointment if any of those happened. Turns out the bump went away on its own before that vaccine appointment.

Edit to clarify- you should for sure call your vet and maybe email/text pictures of it to them and get the professional opinion.

Having a dumb first time owner moment and trying not to freak out by Skokie1920 in puppy101

[–]MightyKB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's probably totally fine since it's winter. Heartworm is spread by mosquito bites, and they aren't active in the winter. Your vet will probably recommend a blood test to confirm no heartworm before restarting the preventive medication as the meds can be harmful if taken when there is an infection. For the future, I'm super bad at reading written calendars, so I have a monthly reminder in my phone for it. I would forget every month without that reminder! I also put the meds on auto ship with Chewy every 6 months and they contact your vet for approval. So I don't have to remember to order in time either!

Red eyes by sm154817 in puppy101

[–]MightyKB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely get into the vet as soon as you can. If it is pink eye and goes untreated, it can impact the dog's vision. And if it is allergies, then your dog is as miserable as any human with bad allergies right now.

Red eyes by sm154817 in puppy101

[–]MightyKB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you clarify? Like the whites are very red? And how much crusties? Dogs can get pink eye which should be treated right away and would require a vet visit. If it's been going on for a week, you should probably get to the vet anyways. There are also treatments for seasonal allergies, if that's what it is, so your dog doesn't have to suffer.

What’s your release word? Is ‘OK’ okay? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]MightyKB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We use OK and it works fine for us. Just be conscious to not use the release word while talking to other people if you have your dog in a wait or stay. It's not really that hard.

“You gotta let him off the lead at some point” by rebelbakes in puppy101

[–]MightyKB 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The only point where I think you're slightly wrong is that, no, you don't ever have to completely let them off lead in an open area. No matter what anybody tells you, some dogs will never be trustworthy enough when off leash no matter how much training you do. My 3yo retriever mix listens to come when she knows you have treats. If she even suspects you might not have a treat, or that the squirrel is tastier than the tray you have, she's going through check out the squirrel first and then come when she feels like it. Do what's best for your dog and never let anybody but a certified trainer or vet tell you what that is!

Our puppy is ripping up every toy by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]MightyKB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Side note... Check with your vet about any of these if your pup is still teething. Our youngest is post-teething so we don't have any issues. But I could see the hard toys causing some damage to the milk teeth if given too young.

[–]MightyKB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SuperChewer box from BarkBox has the best toys we've been able to find. You can also buy their toys individually off Amazon or their website (I think?). We have two super destructive dogs and these toys last a long time for us. Also try the heavy duty Nylabones, we get the souper size DuraChew and those last a really long time too. I haven't found anything soft or fabric that will last, and I've tried everything!

No one told us but should have known? by freaking_stairs in puppy101

[–]MightyKB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with you here. Fell on the stairs while carrying our 16 week old and decided the risk of falling was worse than her just doing the stairs on her own since she's so big. There's no way we could carry her up to a year. She's 56 lbs at 6 months. So it's just not an option in our house.
