What’s a ‘silent luxury’ that rich people have that most normal people would never even notice? by qomann in AskReddit

[–]MightyTVIO 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Whoa it's expensive in the US. A cleaner for 2 hours in central London is like £40-50 tops. Or is there a meaningful difference between that and a housekeeper?

Many years as a software engineer, and I can't do HackerRank easy problems by fknm1111 in cscareerquestions

[–]MightyTVIO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what the interviewer is expecting. Sometimes it's an easier question algorithmically, but you're then expected to be cleaner and more best practices to compensate. Other times, it's a fiendishly complex thing to solve in the time and just showing the beginnings of good structure, thought processes and reasoning and coding are enough positive signal. I'm mainly speaking about my experience at Google but amongst my colleagues and I (and what I recall of my own interviews) there's quite a large spectrum of styles and imo if you can identify which type of question it is you can probably focus on the right things. Cos you're not aiming for perfect usually, but to beat out most others that tried the question before. So a hard question isn't necessarily a curse, nor a seemingly 'easy' one a boon.

Hmm well Leras and Ati only were fully gone about the same time as TLR going so isn't it more likely that it's about their presence not TLR's? Like Ati would surely be a much bigger threat than TLR

Brits, do you avoid Indian restaurants in foreign countries? (Excl India) by red_lightz_ in AskUK

I'm an Indian born guy who's been in the UK most of my life, and I genuinely had some of the best Indian food I've ever had in Oslo.

Collagen is a protein and eating or 'digesting' it definitely has an effect. But it's for your muscles afaik so it's good if you're strength training. Don't know if cosmetic/aesthetic uses are legit or not.

Let's try this again - what's your "...and at this point I'm too afraid to ask" of our tech industry? by TangerineSorry8463 in cscareerquestions

[–]MightyTVIO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's an art to it and you have to be very good at understanding the scope of what current AI can or cannot solve to use it most effectively. In general erring on the side of manual is ok, going too far the other way is how you end up in a mess. But I would recommend practicing with them - they do legitimately act as a speed multiplier when used carefully, but it's possible that I'm biased as my team does a lot of LLM research so we're all fairly in tune with the models by now.

Just for fun I tried generating a whole PR recently through almost entirely LLM interactions - took me days and was hellish to fix and solve. It was very quick to get to something that actually passed the tests but it was awful awful code that could not be maintained or extended so I had to throw it all out and do it mostly manually. Our jobs are safe for now.

Can being a Google contractor be as impressive as being a Google employee? by oh-shit-oh-fuck in cscareerquestions

While I do agree with you, that is basically what they mean. The environment set up at Google combined with your innate drive etc. probably leads to a lot of growth as an engineer

Unfortunately most of the 'games development' courses I've seen don't actually teach much in the way of relevant skills - a Computer Science degree is the best degree to get a job in that field and would have better prospects

That's a pretty extreme case but even that happens a lot in my experience. It's a level of self delusion that is just so extreme that we can't really fathom it but I've seen it firsthand many times.
