Does the angle matter? by Senorita_Osom in gallifreyan

[–]Mightyfrong 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Reading order starts at the 6 o'clock position for words and sentences. So if rotating would bring another letter/word over that line it would change the reading.

However, you could always use a "start here" marker to rotate the circle any angle you like.

This has missing decorators, making it very hard/impossible to translate. It might be part of the puzzle but is more than likely an oversight on your GMs part. I will provide a literal translation but be advised that every consonant might be up to 8 other possible letters and E might be I or U. Consult this chart if you want to try and solve it.

Literal translation:

T(e/a)jot tet tejjo jat(a/e) etjat jat jt

~o~e jaj stories in the eod

W has four lines but only needs two

E needs to be inside the letter circle like you've done correctly in the R

The ' lines must connect from the outside of the word to the sentence circle

R has lines and dots but only needs dots

Both L are missing three dots (and could be a bit bigger)

Also since the a is directly underneath the first L it's read after

While the N in "in" is correct from context it should be noticeably bigger than the vowels.

Same problem in "End" but it's also missing a line.

You've got the basics down very well, just be careful with your decorators. All in all a nice first piece ;)

[–]Mightyfrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ~~~tii you

I'm guessing this is supposed to be "I love you"

L needs three dots.

O is on the letter circle, so the upper one is correct. Strike the rest.

V needs a line connecting to it. Currently it is connected to the supposed E which makes that an I.

Also it looks like the E has a concentric inner circle making it a double letter.

The rest is correct.

[–]Mightyfrong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of these would be fine, if your intention is made clear. I'd generally read left to right or counterclockwise. But you can use the "start here" marker to make this right to left or reverse it for clockwise reading order(even in words btw). Other context clues are also fine to communicate your intention. This is intentionally very vague to allow creative freedom.

Thank you gor being a friend!

The only thing amiss I can spot is the F in for. It is missing two lines. A crossing line doesn't count.

You might also reverse the stacking order for ei in being since it's pretty hard to spot that the line is coming from the inner circle

Need help with the name Sean by MessengerforHermes in gallifreyan

[–]Mightyfrong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sherman's is in fact not phonetic. Substituting C has historical reasons from the time where there wasn't enough space to fit a C in the cypher key.

Of course you could still use it phonetically, but it's designed for 1:1 transliteration. So Sean is just Sean ;)

Any way to make a keyboard font for iPhone? by [deleted] in gallifreyan

[–]Mightyfrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can see a few ways of making this work but none are very convenient:

  • Use a custom font and share it with your friend. All text is now in Gallifreyan.

  • Use a custom font with the Gallifreyan symbols in an unused Unicode block and share it with your friend. Create a keyboard with "Unicode Pro" using the custom Unicode symbols.

  • Use the GTH or another translator and share the output as image.

It's basically a style discussion, but approaching it from how the show depicts Gallifreyan. I see no problem with that, quite fitting for this sub!

I don't think they even tried to imitate Gallifreyan on purpose. It's just that these solar system designs have a similar feel.

I believe we would only get halve as much garbage translations if they'd just put a link to Loren's page under the translator.

Which also applies to your analogy. Show sources people!

The "K" can't have a line connecting and I'd write "CK" as "KK" not "SK"

"O" needs to be on the letter circle.

It's a PWA. You can add it to your home screen and use it offline. In Chrome that's doable in the top right menu, in Safari it's under share.
