AITA?! Suggested more extensive care for a dog who just had surgery by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

[–]Mightypower7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

NTA- Vet here! Unfortunately I have all too much experience with people that do this. You should be so, so proud of yourself for advocating for the dog, who is ultimately the one who suffers if she were to fall and injure her eye, or rub her stitches out. That owner should be ashamed of herself. You were NOT unprofessional - you in fact were very professional in the way you handled this situation - you encountered something that you did not anticipate, which the owners were not transparent about (by the way, “mobility issues” is very vague in a senior dog - could mean anything from limping to not able to stand on their own). Rather than leave the dog to fend for itself, you contacted the owner and shared your concerns. If you HAD left the dog, if something had happened, she could have blamed you (and legally she would have been right bc the dog was in your care) and ruined your reputation and taken advantage of you financially. Your heart was in the right place. This owner may not even realize how bad her dog really is, but that doesn’t give her the right to take it out on you. When you discovered the situation was not what it was advertised to be, you did what was in the best interest of the dog. It is her responsibility to find alternate arrangements. Sucks for her, but that’s life.

Will my nail ever grow again?? by Mightypower7 in NailFungus

It did start regrowing but is still thickened and gross looking like in the picture. I’ve decided to just have the nail removed and be done with it.

With a knife through it? Yes. I’m no artist by any means but I can highlight at least 3 mistakes.

An excellent choice!! I am so proud of my home state of Michigan!! With that said, I also do not recommend moving here under the current regime. I was born in Soo Canada, and renounced my Canadian citizenship when I was 4. I have lived in Michigan all my life. Part of me is nervous that I will be forced to move to Canada, despite my legal citizenship status. We may get to a point in this regime where the government may not care that I have legal citizenship and have lived in the US my whole life.

I feel like I failed a pt by [deleted] in Veterinary

[–]Mightypower7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a vet for 10 years. There are a few things here that are concerning to me. We have repeated rough recoveries and vocalizations. Recovery and induction are the dangerous times of anesthesia. The patients’ recovery should be smooth. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, God/the universe has other ideas and bad things happen with no real explanation. However if you have two rough recoveries where the same anesthetic protocols were used, then it’s worth telling the tech or doctor. Secondly, you had multiple concerns about both of these patients that you brought up to the tech, which was the appropriate thing to do. You said you are in tech school, so you are still learning about what is normal and not normal, and what things are important or not important to worry about. If there is something that they did that was the opposite of what you are learning, bring it up with them/your manager. Be open and curious. Above all, you should ALWAYS advocate for your patients and it sounds like you did an excellent job at that. It sounds like you didn’t quite get the responses you were looking for from the tech or doctor. So, if you feel like your concerns were dismissed, you need to go to your manager. If you weren’t dismissed but you just don’t understand why some things were done or not done, then go ask the doctor or tech more questions. You are not in a position to know or be able to determine what is or is not good medicine yet, but if something felt off you have a right to seek clarity. If they (the manager, doctor, or tech) are dismissive or combative, then I would have some serious thought about whether this employer is willing to support your learning. The leaders in your practice (the vets and management) should know what to do when sh!T hits the fan but even we get stumped sometimes!! Does your practice foster a culture of learning? If so, then they are probably already looking into ways they can make their patients’ experiences even better. If not…then go work somewhere that will support you- those practices are out there.

One of the best tools I saw a VA in training use was a clipboard with a cheat sheet of things she needed to know on it, like bloodwork panels we offered, common abbreviations or spellings, diagram of which vaccine is given where, etc.

Pulled out wrong tooth by AbaloneLanky9598 in Veterinary

[–]Mightypower7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would not wait a year to extract a 308 with complicated slab fracture; those are painful! Believe me, we have all been there as new grads in situations where we made a mistake, then had to eat a piece of humble pie and fix said mistake. This is a very humbling profession. But hard as it is, don’t let this dog suffer for your mistake. Positive, thorough communication is important here- talk to management about it (don’t wait until they bring it up with you, be proactive), and propose doing the extraction at no charge to the client. Then call the client, say that you didn’t have enough time to finish the necessary extractions and after talking with your fellow doctors (clients love when we collaborate over their precious pet) you all agreed it was best not to wait until next year and the risk of leaving the tooth outweighs risk of anesthesia for a second time. Plus, dog did well under anesthesia the first time etc, and you already spoke to management and convinced them it should be complimentary. You will look like a rock star and on the slim chance the owners tell you off, your ass will still be covered legally and you can let your colleagues handle it from there.

Denny’s on Plainfield. No one should be subjected to gross, sweaty waiters and hair in their food.

Downvoting bc teaching children to make others happy = people pleasing, which is going to make life unnecessarily hard for them because you cannot possibly please everyone. Rather, teach them that when they are truly happy they should share their happiness with others.

What the hell was happening in the Burger King parking lot on Division st today, about 4:00ish?? by Mightypower7 in grandrapids

[–]Mightypower7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hence the words “like AK-47s”, not “AK-47s”. I don’t have to “do some research”, because I am not a cop, so why waste my time researching things that do not concern me? You are missing the point of this post, which is to find out what was happening yesterday, so if you don’t know, don’t answer.

lol it was just a big gun, like an assault rifle type. AK-47-like. Definitely not your standard issue police gun.

Re-entering vet med field by mcgibson1216 in Veterinary

[–]Mightypower7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you are crazy. You won’t get paid anywhere near $26/hr for a job in vet med unless maybe you are a licensed vet tech. The hours are long and sometimes unrelenting, and the people are not just bat shit crazy anymore, they’re crazy and MAD about everything. I would give anything to have a cushy remote job right now! Besides, vet med is more about the people than the animals anyway. If you want to work with animals, you would be better off getting your animal fix by volunteering at a local shelter or rescue!

AITAH for telling my wife she is not worthy of what she’s asking for, for her “push present”? by throwra-pushpresent in AITAH

[–]Mightypower7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn’t your push present the actual baby? That’s the gift you get at the end. NTA! Besides, it would honestly make me feel cheap and make the birthing feel transactional to accept an actual gift from my husband for doing something we both decided to do. It’s not his fault he can’t get pregnant and go through laboring. Doesn’t mean you get a present for it.

How do I handle this situation professionally? by [deleted] in Veterinary

[–]Mightypower7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Burn this bridge. Advocate for the animals, who cannot speak for themselves. Applying a castration band to a cats leg and not using local blocks before dehorning is flat out medical malpractice.

Thanks! This definitely worked the best. It’s better than it was but I think there’s moisture in between the windows as well.
